Overview

About the property

4 bedroom, 2 bath/shower room house; separate kitchen/dining room and lounge

This house is located in a quiet cul-de-sac of 6 stone houses. Adjoining 'Volets Blancs' is a smaller cottage which we also own and where we often stay in the summer months when 'Volets Blancs' is occupied by paying guests. If we are not there at the time of their stay, guests are welcome to use its adjoining garden to which there is direct access.

Completely renovated 10 years ago, the house is light and airy and furnished in modern style.

Well insulated, there is heating by individual electric radiators in all rooms. (The wood-burning stove is not available for use by paying guests and should not, of course, be needed in the months when the house is available for letting.)

Hot water is provided by an electric boiler.

Overall the house is 160m2 in size and all bedrooms are double-bedroom size. It is large enough to accommodate 2 families (4 adults and 4 children) who wish to share a holiday home.

Ground floor:

Kitchen/dining room, Lounge, Shower room, separate WC and laundry room

Upstairs:

Bedrooms 1 and 2: double beds

Bedrooms 3 and 4 with 2 adult-size single beds

Bathroom (with shower)

Separate WC

Outside:

Small front garden with lawn area.

Patio terrace at the rear with barbecue and evening sun.

Garden shed attached to the house in which bicycles and other items can be stored during guests' stay.

Parking for 2 cars in front of house.

Grocery shopping and restaurants/bars within 5 minutes drive.

About David and Linda Compton

We are English residents who both speak French (Linda fluently), having both studied French at university (a long time ago!).

As French speakers and francophiles, we decided to buy our own holiday 'retreat' in Normandy in 2000. This was the smaller cottage.

In 2004 we purchased the larger adjoining house, 'Volets Blancs', and completely renovated it. We have used these houses as holiday homes for ourselves and our family, ignoring our initial intention to let the larger one as a gite. Now that our children and grandchildren are restricted to school holidays, it seems sensible to revert to our original plan and let 'Volets Blancs'. We are sure that you will love it as much as we do.

David and Linda Compton purchased this house in 2004

Why David and Linda Compton chose Avranches area

'Volets Blancs' is in a quiet, rural setting but allows quick and easy access to vast sandy beaches, where you can throw a frisbee, get out the boules or pitch your cricket stumps, as well to several bustling seaside resorts within 20 minutes drive.

There are many places to visit within an hour's drive and Bayeux and the D-Day landing beaches can be visited on a longer day's outing.

What makes this house unique

In summary, the house's location allows guests to enjoy rural, beach and seaside activities and there are many interesting places to visit within one hour by car. The countryside and coastline in this part of Normandy are very beautiful. Food and other shopping is close at hand, as are several bars and restaurants.

Que du bonheur, cette maison ! Une vraie maison de famille ! Pour nous, tout fut super, encore !!

  • 5 of 5

Tolles Ferienhaus in wunderschöner Gegend

  • 5 of 5

[English translation of Review: Super holiday home in a lovely location. In June 2017 we stayed at Volets Blancs, 2 families (4 adults and 2 children) and we were absolutely delighted. We did not get to meet the owners, our communication being conducted, and very well, by email. Linda and David were friendly and helpful, our questions being answered quickly and comprehensively. The house was exactly as we pictured it and as portrayed in the various photos – tastefully furnished, spacious, well equipped and above all clean. The only thing we lacked and missed was a dishwasher, but we knew that in advance! The close neighbours were friendly and discreet. We took up the suggestion of buying fresh eggs directly from a neighbour and the children were thrilled. We spent a few hours on the beach at Jullouville (about 10 minutes away); unfortunately, we were unlucky with the weather. However, in any event we would recommend a visit to the Aquarium in Saint Malo for a family with children, where a walk around the Old Town is also well worthwhile. Several times we tried and enjoyed the tasty, fresh and local cuisine at the Hotel Restaurant Les Bains in St. Jean-le-Thomas (about 5 minutes away) – it has a limited menu and charming staff. All in all, we had a super holiday and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Dragey-Ronthon. Many thanks! English translation of Response: Thank you, Sarah, for your detailed review. We are delighted that you spent such a lovely holiday at Volets Blancs. Unfortunately we didn’t meet you – maybe we can put that right next time you visit Normandy. With our best wishes, David and Linda.]

superbe propriete

  • 5 of 5

Car: necessary

Situation:

'Volets Blancs' is situated in a very quiet rural hamlet called Le Bisson on the outskirts of Ronthon, very close to the long, wide sandy beaches at St Jean-le-Thomas with a view of Mont St. Michel (4 minutes by car), at Carolles (8 minutes) and at Jullouville (12 minutes).

5 minutes away is what is said to be 'the most beautiful kilometre in France': the cliff road at Champeaux from which you have a truly breath-taking view over Mont St. Michel Bay.

It is an ideal location both for adults who enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside and for children and adults alike seeking the activities of a lively seaside resort. Both Carolles and Jullouville are very popular with holidaymakers.

Places to visit:

The world famous Mont St. Michel, France's most popular tourist site (40 minutes), the port and sailing centre of Granville (20 minutes), Avranches (15 minutes), and St Malo, Cancale,, Dinard, Vitre and Rennes (all about an hour away).

Visit the excellent zoo at Champrepus (20 minutes); the cider farm, L'Hermitiere, at St Jean-des-Champs (18 minutes) to see how calvados is made; the old abbeys at St Pierre-Langers (10 minutes) and Hambye (35 minutes) and the Ecomusée de la Baie at Vains (10 minutes).

For a longer day out, go and see the Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day landing beaches (75 minutes). Or tour around la Suisse-Normande (90 minutes away).

Activities:

The many kilometres of beaches along this stretch of coast are clean and uncrowded and provide the opportunity for a wide range of activities: swimming, rock-pooling, wind-surfing, kite-surfing, beach cricket, volleyball and other beach games.

From Genêts (10 minutes away) you can take a guided walk across the sands to Mont St. Michel or, for a shorter trek, to Tombelaine, the much smaller rock island in the bay. (Don't attempt these walks on your own because of the notorious quicksands out in the bay.)

There are many sign-posted walking and cycling routes in the area with durations of one to several hours; or you can just find your own routes in the surrounding countryside or on the quiet coastal roads and paths alongside Mont St. Michel Bay.

With Normandy famous for its horses, there are a number of racing stables nearby. You can go horse-riding (contact L'écurie du Bec at Genêts). You will often see the 'trotting' horses exercising along the local beaches.

Eating and drinking:

There is a restaurant in Ronthon (0.7km), three more in St. Jean-le-Thomas (2.5km), one of which (Le Brulo't) offers excellent wood-fired pizzas, some pasta dishes, a choice of grills and a children's menu, all at prices which will not strain the average holiday budget. There are many more restaurants in the beach resorts of Carolles and Jullouville as well as in Granville and Avranches. Seafood is obviously a local speciality; try Coquilles St. Jacques (scallops)and the ever popular moules frites!

For an evening drink in summer, try the beach bar at Dragey-Plage (5 minutes) and watch the sun go down over Mont St. Michel Bay.

Shopping:

Buy fresh eggs or poultry from our neighbours (75 metres walk!). They and other neighbours speak only French and are all very happy to help visitors practise their language skills. (Send your children to buy the eggs!)

For local shopping there is a boulangerie and a grocer's in St Jean-le-Thomas (4 minutes), a large supermarket (Super U) and a smaller Carrefour Express in Sartilly (7 minutes), where there are also 2 boulangeries (ah, those cakes and pastries!), a butcher's and a charcuterie. For bigger shopping there is a very large Leclerc supermarket in Granville (18 minutes) and both a Leclerc (15 minutes) and a Carrefour (20 minutes) in Avranches.

There are excellent Saturday markets in Granville and Avranches. At the market in Granville (open air and covered) you will find fresh local produce and clothes and antique stalls.

Don't forget to buy apples for the donkeys in local fields (sometimes even in the field behind the house!).

Granville and to a lesser extent Avranches have an array of shops selling all and sundry from antiques to the latest fashions.

Throughout the summer there are village fetes and brocantes (flea markets) where you can be sure of finding a bargain!

Other amenities:

Literature about local attractions and activities (including dates of local fetes and brocantes) is available in the house to help you plan your days. There is a tourist office (syndicat d'initiatives) in St. Jean-le-Thomas (open in high season), another in Jullouville (throughout the summer period) and others in Granville and Avranches (all year).

Information about local medical services and hospitals and other amenities is available in the house.
