Overview

About the property

A cosy, Victorian cottage, recently renovated, nestling within the South Downs. Sleeps 2/3. King size bed. Bathroom with large, walk-in shower. Private sitting room with flat screen TV & DVD player, log burning stove (logs/kindling are supplied for the first evening & available to buy at either of the two local stores thereafter) and dining area over-looking mature garden. Small kitchen equipped for light catering. Washing machine. Wi-fi. Ample, secure off road parking. Small outside courtyard perfect for breakfast. Beautiful walks along the River Itchen or on the South Downs on the doorstep. Shawford has it's own station making for easy day trips to London (approx. 65 mins) or the New Forest/South Coast (approx. 40 mins). Winchester, the ancient capital, is less than three miles away, - a four minute train ride - there you will find acclaimed restaurants (Rick Steins, River Cottage), plenty of old, historic pubs, pavement cafes, a buzzing High Street, live theatre..... alternatively stroll through the pretty back streets behind the magnificent Norman Cathedral to find Jane Austen's house and the Bishop's old Palace. If you enjoy walking, Winchester can be reached in around 40 minutes by following the path of the River Itchen which flows through the centre of Shawford.

Shawford village has a local pub which serves good 'pub grub' and has a large beer garden.

The Down House Cottage is attached to our family home, it has it's own separate front door and is entirely private although as it is attached there can be some occasional noise transference.

Our family has two friendly labradors plus a cat. It is a non-smoking premises.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Perfect spot for us.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were in England from Canada and recently spent a week at the Down Cottage while visiting family who live close by. The garden setting and the restored old home made for a unique and interesting place to stay. Because the relatively recent renovation of the house included excellent heat, light and plumbing fixtures we were warm, we could read in the evenings and we enjoyed great water pressure in the shower. Having just come off a week's walking holiday on which the walking paths were essentially mud, I was very pleased to find a working washing machine at the Cottage. Susan was a warm and welcoming host, helpful if we needed it without being at all intrusive and she communicated with me ahead of time promptly. Despite easy access to the motorway and to the trains, the Down Cottage is on a quiet road and offers a lovely, tranquil setting. Should we need a place to stay close to Winchester again, we hope that the Down Cottage will be available. It suited us perfectly.

Exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

When I booked this cottage, I was a little worried that it was too good to be true but when we got there, it was indeed perfect! It was incredibly cosy and warm and when we arrived, Sue had very kindly left us some milk and biscuits and also some kindling and logs for the log burner. The local pub was fantastic and the cottage was well positioned for the train station ............ a three minute walk! We took the train into Winchester (all of five minutes) and visited their Christmas market which was incredible. All in all, the whole weekend was a huge success and if we ever want to stay in the area again, we would most definitely stay at The Down House.

Amazing and comfortable place!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay here! Susan was super nice, had great communication, and greeted us with a nice bag of cookies. She even put some milk in the fridge for us!. Her place is great! Two story place with the kitchen and living room downstairs, and the bathroom and bedroom upstairs. Very comfortable and private. Very quiet and peaceful. Amazing walks with beautiful streams and fields close by. Very nicely decorated home and was super private. Just a short walk down the street to the train station and the local pub/restaurant. A well stocked store is just a few minutes drive away. Just a short trip to get to historical and lovely town Winchester. Loved our stay at The Down House. And thank you Susan for welcoming us so warmly!

Wonderful English cottage with garden.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Down House Cottage. It was peaceful, clean and perfect for our needs. For other travellers, be aware that the stairs up to the bath and bedroom is steep and narrow. Fine for us, but wouldn't be for anyone with infirmities. We loved spending time in the garden, walking the village and having 2 dinners at the pub at the end of the road. Great food and nice patio to sit in since the weather was warm. Nice trails around for walking and running on. Overall wonderful spot.

Lovely cottage in the perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

Went for a weekend break to experience the city and Christmas Market. Susan was very welcoming and provided plenty of advice on places to eat and things to see. Cottage was very cosy and well catered for, in a perfect location just down the road from the train station and local pub. Couldn't have asked for a better mini break!!!
