About the property

9 bed, 6 bath, sleeps 18; blend of ancient and modern; 4-acre garden with river

Morland House is a large manor house in the picturesque village of Morland, in the Eden Valley in Cumbria. The core of the house is 16th century, but it has been added to many times over the years. Originally a vicarage, it has been the home of the Markham family since 1828, when an ancestor was vicar of Morland church, and was purchased in 1871 when a new (smaller) vicarage was built elsewhere.

The house features oak-panelled main rooms, including a grand dining room for special dinners, a long drawing room seating 16 with a grand piano, an inner hall with a log-burning stove, plus a family kitchen, games room, snug, caterer's kitchen for parties, and more. There are 9 bedrooms, of which 3 are en-suite, and the remainder share 3 additional bathrooms. There are two woodburning stoves and three usable fireplaces. On a more modern note, there is good wifi coverage throughout the house, two large TVs and a stereo music system.

The property also benefits from a large, interesting and beautiful 4-acre garden including a beck (river), waterfall, bridges, stepping stones, private section for guests with a patio and summer house, orchard, and croquet lawn.

About Freddy Markham

Morland House has been the home of the Markham family since 1828, and is now owned and run by three generations of the family - Freddy, Gervase and William. Freddy lives in Morland and manages various properties and a campsite; Gervase lives in Sheffield and works for the Mozilla organization, makers of the Firefox web browser; and William lives in Sheffield and goes to nursery twice a week.

Freddy Markham purchased this chateau / country house in 1871

Why Freddy Markham chose Penrith, East Lakes & Eden Valley

Morland House is ideally situated for a Lake District holiday, being easily accessible from the M6 (12 minutes) and the Euston-Glasgow railway (Euston 3 hours), but central for the Lakes, and also the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall, the Borders and the Solway Firth.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Morland House is unique so staying is a special experience. Parts date from the 16/17th century with 18th and 19th century additions. The 20th and 21st centuries saw the addition of central heating and many more bathrooms. The main rooms are unchanged from the 1880's, and are panelled in dark oak. The dining room can seat up to 18, and there are comfortable sofas for the same number in the drawing room which also features a Bechstein grand piano which guests are welcome to play.

The four acre garden has many interesting features and excellent photographic locations. A special unseen part is reserved exclusively for guests but other visitors are few, with none in the evening. A croquet lawn adds to the country house atmosphere.
