About the property

1 Half Moon Cottages, a 2 storey cottage, located right on the village green in Reeth, described itself as a natural amphitheatre, surrounded by spectacular scenery and stunning panoramas, Reeth was championed by Ella Pontefract, one of the Yorkshire Dale's most esteemed authors as "a little country in itself." 1 Half Moon Cottages is part of an 18th Century old coaching inn sleeping four and overlooking the Dales and the Village green with panoramic views on three sides of the building from the lounge, kitchen and bedrooms. Located nextdoor to one of the three pubs, up the stone steps to the front door you will find a porch for those muddy walking boots, a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, hob oven, microwave, toaster etc, 2 double bedrooms both with views and tvs, why not relax and enjoy you morning cuppa in bed overlooking the hills and dales, a crisp white bathroom suite with shower, open plan sociable lounge/kitchen with real fire for those cosy nights in with logs/coal provided. TV, games, books etc. Welcome basket on arrival, dogs and children welcome ! Special occasions catered for with a personal, friendly service, we live locally and don't use a management company because we pride ourselves on a personal touch and want to ensure our guests are looked after and will return. If you want your fridge filled for your arrival or a table booking or collecting from a train/bus station/airport then we can help with that. "Old Cherry Cottages Ltd... Your Home Away from Home".

Location

Unbelievable sights

If exploring is your thing, then you've come to the right place. Reeth has a variety of beautiful yet challenging hill walks and an abundance of wildlife on offer, guaranteed to satisfy even the most seasoned of sightseers. There's large numbers of curlew, lapwing, oystercatcher, wild hare...and if you're lucky even the rare black grouse. Visit in April or May and you'll catch the new-born baby lambs too.

Natural Beauty

Reeth was also the birthplace of popular fiction novelist Ruby Ferguson, whose stories were enjoyed so much by The Queen Mother that she was invited to Buckingham Palace for dinner. Ferguson's atmospheric inspiration arguably came from Reeth's mysterious yet picturesque landscape of wild flower meadows and stunning heather, which is concealed between the hills.

Saddle up

If you prefer a slightly less strenuous form of travel, Reeth's moors provide the perfect terrain for pony trekking, a firm favourite method of transport among visitors. Alternatively adrenaline junkies can take it up a gear on our range of fast paced mountain biking trails, bike hire and courses are available from the nearbyDales Bike Centre.

Swaledale & Wensleydale Arts & Crafts Trail

Many Arts and craftpeople live and work in Swaledale and Wensleydale, finding inspiration in a unique country side of pastoral riverside villages, tumbling waterfalls, sweeping fells and moorland. There are a diverse band of artists working in and with a wide variety of materials wood and wools, metaland glass, clay and candle wax, rope, felt and copper. All of them are dedicated to creating high quality beautifully crafted products for the market both at home and overseas.

Visit them in their own workshops and take home a piece of the artistic Dales. The villages where the workshops can be found are Reeth and Muker in Swaledale and Hawes, Hardraw, West Burton, Wensley and Garriston, in Wensleydale.

Not a cottage - part of a coach house

  • 3 of 5

We arrived to find that the property was not a cottage, rather a part of a former coach house. Though a pleasing enough looking building, it was not at all what we were led to believe by the description. We didn't feel this was a cottage so a little disappointed about this. Neither did we expect to find the bottom of the steps leading up to the house the 'smokers corner' of the neighbouring pub and found it uncomfortable having to make our way through smokers to get to the gate. It was also very noisy because of the groups congregating there, and the Fri and Sat nights were almost unbearable because of the commotion way beyond closing time. This also meant we were unable to have the bedroom window open.

The cottage was clean and the welcome basket was a lovely surprise. It was thoughtful to leave dog towels but we always carry our own and didn't want to make extra laundry.

The owners have made this a comfortable place but for us it was a little too busy and fussy . The colour schemes in the bedroom are not very relaxing and the red in the first bedroom is very over-powering. It would be much more appealing decorated simplistically.

We were surprised to see a For sale sign!!

The location right next to the pub and the green right outside with crowds of people lets this property down. It would be better if the smokers table and ashtray were placed at the other end of the pub/hotel.

Owner's Response: Hello Roy Thank you for your review, we are disappointed to receive anything less than our normal 5 stars. We were a little concerned that you felt 1 Half Moon Cottages was 'not as described' or 'not at all what you were led to believe' as you booked through Owners Direct and the opening paragraph of the property description on the site beings with: "1 Half Moon Cottages, a 2 storey cottage, located right on the village green in Reeth.....1 Half Moon Cottages is part of an 18th Century old coaching inn sleeping four and overlooking the dales and the Village green with panoramic views on three sides of the building from the lounge, kitchen and bedrooms". It continues, "Located nextdoor to one of the three pubs up the stone steps to the front door you will find ....." Sadly it appears that you made your reservation and subsequently wrote your review without ever reading the description of the cottage as opposed to anything being not as described or misleading. You stayed with us during August Bank Holiday week and the village and pub was clearly too busy for you and we will certainly pass on your comments to both the pub and the parish council. Finally we are sorry you didn't find our choice of decor in one of the bedrooms, which are all shown in the photographs, to your own personal taste. Thank you for leaving the cottage so clean and tidy and we hope you were successful in the Catterick Para 10 Tab which was on that weekend. Kind regards Jo and Neale

Lovely cottage, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We arrived by car, and although there is no designated parking for the cottage there are plenty of spaces immediately besides it. The cottage is well-equipped with everything you could need for cooking and eating. It is beautifully and tastefully furnished with quality furnishings and fittings well above standard usually found in a rental cottage, and the bedrooms particularly had a luxurious feel to them. It was spotlessly clean, cosy and comfortable and we couldn't have asked for more. There was also a welcome basket with some some lovely treats and games, books and videos should you want to spend an evening in.

What also commends this cottage is its location. It's in the centre of the village but you overlooks the dales (you can sit in the window seats and watch the changing skies over the hills) and a good base for walking or sight-seeing by car. There is a good choice of friendly pubs and cafes in the village, an ice-cream parlour, post office and shops, all within a couple of minutes walk.

The owners were very helpful and kept in touch regarding the booking. We would definitely recommend this property. Thanks Jo & Neale

Wonderful Cottage in a 'chocolate box' village.

  • 5 of 5

A very warm and generous welcome to a beautiful cottage in a charming Yorks Dales village. The cottage has been tastefully renovated to a v high specification, but still retains its 'olde worlde' charm. The hosts are lovely with nothing being too much trouble. The village itself is charming with many wonderful walks on the door step and an array of village shops and pubs. Highly recommended!
