About the property

Cottage, 3 Double Bedrooms & 2 Bathrooms for 6 People Plus Baby

Roma cottage is in the ideal location, right in the heart of Staithes, but away from the road so perfect for small children. All three bedrooms have a spacious airy feel and are individually styled with the attic master bedroom having an ensuite bathroom. This charming and cosy cottage is ideal for a romantic break for two - just throw some coal on the fire and open the wine! Its spacious layout is just as suited to a great family holiday. See the photographs for the newly refurbished living room and master suite, cosy bedrooms, thoughtful touches, well-equipped kitchen (totally re-fitted in 2016) and 2 bathrooms, all presented to a high standard throughout. Staithes is a working fishing village that has been designated with conservation status due to its unique character and is within the Yorkshire National Park. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleyways reflect its rugged past. With its own small sandy beach no wonder it's called "a bit of Cornwall in Yorkshire". It is the perfect base for walking, touring and exploring the coast and North Yorkshire Moors. Whitby is only 10 miles away, Scarborough is 35 minutes by car and Heartbeat Country is all around. The Cleveland Way passes through the village and stunning cliff top walks start straight out of your front door.

Activity and Interests

Staithes was names by The Times in 2015 and 2016 as one of the top 10 locations in the UK for a holiday home: 'one of the friendliest and most artistic villages on the northeast coast. Its setting couldn't be more picturesque - cosy cottages scrunched up together on winding streets, tucked away in a jagged cove by the sea...a picture-book spot, with cottages packed tight behind the harbour'.

The Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage is now in its fourth year and has established itself as one of the most relaxed, friendly, must-go-to events in the regional arts calendar. During the Festival weekend, some 100+ cottages open their doors and become temporary art galleries in a unique selling exhibition. There are currently some 30 artists resident in the village, but the Festival is open to all artists of all abilities and attracts both professional and amateur artists from all over the country. Staithes heritage is also celebrated during the weekend in fossils, fishing, family history, smuggling, ironstone, alum and much more. There is live music, busking, workshops, talks, guided walks and delicious food and drink from our pubs, cafes, bistros, restaurants and pop-up tearooms.

Fishing trips out to sea can be arranged in the village or you can fish from the pier. Surfing is increasingly popular and a surf school is located in Saltburn, just a 15 minute drive away.

Staithes was once an important fishing base, home to locally built boats and a small fleet of brightly coloured Whitby Cobles. Now, the boats are used by local fishermen to catch cod, lobsters and crabs and some vessels offer short pleasure cruises. Staithes beach and cluster of rock pools make this a wonderful place to explore, and there are so many fossils that this area that it has been nicknamed the ‘Dinosaur Coast' - so keep your eyes open!

The award winning town of Whitby is just 10 minutes by car - sample the kippers from the smokehouse at the base of the 199 steps, then climb up to the Abbey for fantastic views across the Esk Valley. Wander into the many Whitby Jet workshops then have fish & chips on the pier, or treat yourself to a meal at the famous Magpie fish restaurant.

Other attractions include; Scarborough's water park and Sea world, York, Flamingo Land and Heartbeat's Goatland, to name but a few.

Further Details:

Several good pubs serving food (child & dog friendly). Fish & chip shop, several cafes and lovely cosy bistro all nearby.

Large Co-op store on main road with cash machine. Several petrol stations selling coal and kindling within 5 minute drive. Larger supermarkets in Whitby or why not arrange online grocery delivery for your arrival.

  • Parking - Staithes is not designed for modern day traffic and part of its unique charm is the quiet cobbled streets. Therefore there is only minimal short stay parking down in the village (40 minutes). We have purchased a parking permit that allows for you to park on the council car park free of charge,(additional cars can pay locally). You can drive down to the cottage anytime to drop off & unload. The car park is about 400 yards away and accessed via quite a nice path overlooking the village that also avoids the hill. Outside: Front gated private patio with outside seating. To the rear of the cottage is a small enclosed yard, some seating and BBQ. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen is included and beds will be made up ready for your arrival. You will need to bring your own towels, though kitchen towels and cleaning materials are all provided. A parking permit is also supplied for one car free of charge.
