About Mrs. Janet Cowie

I was born and brought up on a farm in Lancashire. I moved to Shandon in Argyll just before our son was born in 1979. We built Garemount Lodge a few years later to the design of a Scottish cottage. In 1991 we built an extension with the purpose of providing a Bed & Breakfast business, which I ran until 2004. We then converted this section of the house into a self-catering accommodation, with an open-plan kitchen/living room downstairs and a double bedroom with adjoining bathroom upstairs. I was pleased to be awarded a 4 Star grading by the Scottish Tourist Board (Visit Scotland). Over the years we have enjoyed welcoming visitors to our home from all over the world.

Mrs. Janet Cowie purchased this cottage in 1986

A wonderful lodge with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at this lodge on the side of Loch Gare. The accommodation was spotless and there was literally everything you needed for the stay. The views from downstairs and especially upstairs were wonderful. Janet was a great host and she should be proud of her accommodation. It is great value for money. We spent the days travelling around. The lodge is close to many wonderful places. We also used the local bus to get to Helensburgh which was very reliable.

Immaculate, well equipped and very comfortable.

  • 4 of 5

We had a very comfortable and relaxed week in very pleasant surroundings. Owners were friendly and approachable, and despite the weather we had an excellent week in well maintained self-catering accommodation. The dog had a great time too.!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. I'm so pleased that both of you, and Cara your delightful Labrador, enjoyed your stay here, and found some good dog-walks in this area, despite the rainy days last week.

Car: recommended

We're 1.5 miles away from the Conservation village of Rhu with a church, post-office, shop, hotel, sailing club, marina and pub, plus Glenarn Gardens.

The Victorian waterside town of Helensburgh is 4 miles away and has a Waitrose plus two more supermarkets, a variety of independent shops, coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, a lovely town square with weekly markets, a promenade and a pier. There's the Charles Rennie Mackintosh masterpiece The Hill House, and the paddle-steamer The Waverley calls in during the summer for trips down the Clyde. Helensburgh has an indoor swimming pool and fitness centre, tennis and golf clubs. There are 2 railway stations - one to Glasgow & Edinburgh, the other takes you north on the picturesque West Highland Line.

Loch Lomond is 15 minutes drive away for boat trips, the picture-postcard village of Luss, also Loch Lomond Shores (Jenners store, shops, Sea Life Centre).

Glasgow is less than an hour away for great retail therapy, museums, galleries, restaurants.

Edinburgh is 2 hours away for wonderful architecture and many attractions, including the Edinburgh Festival in August.

We're within an hour of Stirling (Castle,Victorian Jail, William Wallace monument), the scenic Trossachs, Loch Katrine (boat trips), Inveraray (Castle & Victorian Jail), the Blair Drummond Safari Park, Doune Castle, a wonderful antiques centre at Doune, Culzean Castle in Ayrshire, the Glengoyne Whisky Distillery, and the Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Walkable from Garemount Lodge is Shandon Country Pursuits for horse-trekking, clay-target shooting, off-roading, fishing. Even closer, there's paddle-board hire for fun on (and in) the Gareloch.

We're half a mile from the Faslane Submarine Base, so you might see a submarine gliding down the loch. And also from your windows you'll see a variety of birds, and the occasional deer, rabbits, and squirrels in our garden.
