About the Owner

My name is Ruth Bolton. I manage the house for my father who has lived in Elmswell for over 70 years. He still farms the surrounding land with my brother. I was born on the farm next door but one and have lived in Suffolk all my life.

Fresh air and countryside

  • 5 of 5

We rented Oak Farm for a family get together and the house proved to be perfect. The house is in a peaceful setting with a large garden and its own meadows. We went on lots of walks behind the house which has great footpaths to follow. Elmswell has a handy little supermarket and a pub which serves Thai food. We loved Bury St Edmunds and the market on Wednesday. We also went on a Greene King Brewery Tour. Ruth and her family gave us a great welcome and the house is spotless. Some of the furniture and carpets look a little dated but the beds were really comfy and the house inside is really interesting with loads of beams. We loved the kitchen which is really well equipped if you like to cook.

We had a delightful Christmas and New Year holiday with our family at Oak Farm. The property was warm, comfortable, clean and spacious for us all. We had several visiting guests over the Christmas period and there was ample provision. The kitchen was well equipped and we cooked a scrumptious Christmas dinner despite my misgivings about cooking in a strange kitchen!

The village was well located for visiting the surrounding countryside and there were many good restaurants in the neighbourhood. Ruth was particularly welcoming, helpful and accommodating in all our needs and we will definitely be returning!

Great spot, well kitted out and very convenient for the A14 & Bury St Ed. Ruth left a lovley cake and apples for the 4 very friendly horses in the field! A really nice cottage with great support from the owner who was very helpful (on this and our previous stay!) Highly recommended for families (we have 4 children, aged, 2, 9, 10 and 12 - something for everyone.

Had a fantastic week at oak farm, the property is enormous, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The outdoor space is fabulous , beautiful scenery and very secluded. Ideal for families, kids loved exploring the house, feeding the horses and watching the wildlife.

We will definitely return here again, we have some fantastic memories of a brilliant family holiday.

Would highly recommend oak farm to anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing break.

Peaceful, spacious house

  • 4 of 5

We loved Oak Farm! The house is spacious and well arranged for a family party with plenty of space to eat and sit and relax. We enjoyed watching the wild life on the pond and even saw a heron. The house is really well equipped and has a big kitchen. Beds are mostly single ( one double) and the house was spotless, although some things a little dated. Ruth was extremely helpful and left us a delicious home made coffee cake. This was a great base to explore East Anglia. We managed to get to the coast, Norfolk Broads and to Cambridge. Wyken Vineyard was our favourite place to eat.

From the Owner

Oak Farm is the perfect house for a family or group get together. The spacious living rooms and dining room, together with the large kitchen with Rayburn, make this a very sociable house. The garden and meadows remain unspoilt and are full of wild flowers in the Spring time. The pond is part of the old moat. There are farm walks from behind the house.Truly a peaceful location.

The heavily beamed house retains many original features and dates back to the 14th Century. Watch the sun set across the fields in the evening whilst sitting on the terrace or in the sun room.
