About The Owner

We are Alan and Karen Brunnen. We live 5 mins from Smithy Cottage with our 2 daughters, Labradoodle, Westie, 2 cats and 3 chickens.

We have lived in Keig for nearly 10 years and love this area with its spectacular views.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2014

Why The Owner chose Aberdeen City & Shire

We bought Smithy Cottage in 2014. The previous owners had it for over 40 yrs and used it as an escape from city life. It only had open fires and candles for light. As tempting as it was to leave it this way we went ahead and installed electricity which gave the cottage lighting, heating and hot water for the first time in its circa 250 yr life. The cottage was the local Smithy for many many years, some of the stonework in the garden is the original workshop. Many generations of the same family are buried in Keig Churchyard.

We fitted a new shower room, new kitchen and appliances, new flooring throughout. A new log burner was also installed and heaters in every room. After 11 months we were finally ready for guests in July 2015.

Everything is just perfect at this amazing cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This is our fourth stay at the cottage in two years (and second in three weeks!) which I think says it all. We absolutely love it! The cottage, its garden and the location are beautiful. It is well furnished and maintained and has everything you need. Karen is the perfect host - really lovely to deal with, genuinely interested in ensuring you have a great time and very responsive. This time we were celebrating my sister's birthday and Karen kindly left a birthday wishes note and a couple of special food and drink items for her as a surprise which she was delighted with. Once again thanks for everything Karen. We hope to be back for many years to come!

Beautiful cottage in a perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Love this accommodation! Karen is so easy to deal with from the initial booking to the end of your stay and always very helpful and timely in her responses. She has renovated this traditional cottage to an exceptionally high standard. All rooms are designed beautifully with thoughtful touches and make very effective use of the space available. The cottage is also equipped with everything anyone would need for their stay and has a great outdoor area with beautiful views. I had stayed here for 6 nights as a solo traveller last year and enjoyed it so much wanted my family to experience it this time around. They were very impressed also, had a great few days holiday and, like me, didn't want to leave. Thanks very much for everything Karen, including the welcome pack, and hope to be back (very) soon! :)

Lovely cottage and location

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed being in a rural location with great views of the Aberdeenshire countryside and easy access to walks, cycles and castles along the Don and Dee valleys. The cottage was well equipped, comfortable and modern with extra touches such as a welcome basket of goodies on arrival. The owner was very welcoming and attentive and made our stay very pleasant. We would definitely recommend to other families who like the outdoor life, although popping in to Aberdeen was also very convenient!

Idyllic Smithy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Smithy Cottage is located on a hillside overlooking a stunning view of the Howe Valley and a long long view it is. Each time we left or returned we always stopped to just gaze across the rolling hills and checkered fields. The cottage itself was beautifully done and offered all the amenities and then some. The decorating was tasteful and invited relaxation--in fact it was often difficult to leave to go out and tour the countryside. Finally, the location was very central to the northern seaside, the castle route, and the neolithic sites in the area. We appreciated the help Karen gave us when we went to her with questions. Staying at Smithy Cottage contributed greatly to another wonderful trip to Scotland.

Thoughtfully equipped, cosy cottage.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage in a fab location with lovely country views. Thoughtfully equipped with everything you'll need for a short stay or an extended break. Rural position, but convenient for Alford or Insch for supplies, and handy for Whisky Trail and many gorgeous castles. Lovely comfortable cosy sitting room especially with log burner going! Thoroughly recommended.
