Why The Owner chose Aberdeen City & Shire
We bought Smithy Cottage in 2014. The previous owners had it for over 40 yrs and used it as an escape from city life. It only had open fires and candles for light. As tempting as it was to leave it this way we went ahead and installed electricity which gave the cottage lighting, heating and hot water for the first time in its circa 250 yr life. The cottage was the local Smithy for many many years, some of the stonework in the garden is the original workshop. Many generations of the same family are buried in Keig Churchyard.
We fitted a new shower room, new kitchen and appliances, new flooring throughout. A new log burner was also installed and heaters in every room. After 11 months we were finally ready for guests in July 2015.

Idyllic Smithy Cottage
Smithy Cottage is located on a hillside overlooking a stunning view of the Howe Valley and a long long view it is. Each time we left or returned we always stopped to just gaze across the rolling hills and checkered fields. The cottage itself was beautifully done and offered all the amenities and then some. The decorating was tasteful and invited relaxation--in fact it was often difficult to leave to go out and tour the countryside. Finally, the location was very central to the northern seaside, the castle route, and the neolithic sites in the area. We appreciated the help Karen gave us when we went to her with questions. Staying at Smithy Cottage contributed greatly to another wonderful trip to Scotland.
Thoughtfully equipped, cosy cottage.
A lovely cottage in a fab location with lovely country views. Thoughtfully equipped with everything you'll need for a short stay or an extended break. Rural position, but convenient for Alford or Insch for supplies, and handy for Whisky Trail and many gorgeous castles. Lovely comfortable cosy sitting room especially with log burner going! Thoroughly recommended.
Beautiful home, would definitely book again!
Thank you for a wonderful stay! This home is beautiful. You have done an amazing job in renovating and decorating this 2 bedroom cottage.
The home is very clean, with all of the amenities needed to have the perfect vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed our cozy nights in, watching some of the DVDs provided. There was plenty of room for the four of us, and we were all genuinely sad to leave at the end of our visit.
If we're ever fortunate enough to visit Scotland again, we would book this cottage in a heartbeat.
Marvellous summerstay at Smithy Cottage
We stayed at Smithy Cottage for ten days with our two children. Everybody enjoyed the beautiful cottage, the very calm surrounding and the great golf courses nearby. The equipment of the cottage is marvellous and Karen was extremely helpful and polite. We hope we will be able to visit Smithy Cottage again.

Peaceful homely cottage
This is the third time myself and my boyfriend have stayed in this beautiful cottage. For us it is home from home, in a peaceful location to get away and relax for a few days. The cottage is well equipped, modern, clean and cosy; Karen the owner has kitted the cottage out extremely well going as far as leaving fresh coffee, wine, milk, bread, fresh orange and crisps for our arrival each time.
The cottage is about a 5 min drive from Alford, and about a 25 min drive from Kildrummy Inn - a restaurant I highly recommend, the food is amazing!
As always, I can't fault the cottage, or Karen the host who has been great at keeping in touch.
We look forward to staying again sometime soon.
