About the property

An easy 30 minute drive from Chania airport, Angeliki's house is tucked away in

An easy 30 minute drive from Chania airport, Angeliki's house is tucked away in the peaceful village of Aptera (formerly known as Megala Chorafia). From it's extensive patio, this cosy teracotta tiled house has the most spectacular views over the Lefka Ori (or white mountains).

The terrace benefits from the natural shade of a large a Carob tree, together with a traditional bread oven, well stocked logstore and plenty of seating. An outside dining table with four chairs is provided alongside two sunloungers.

This well equipped self catering accommodation is by no means isolated. The centre of the village a 15 minute stroll and boasts a village store which stocks all of the day to day essentials together with three tavernas and a bar (serving mezze). The village store and taverna closest to the property are open all year. Free Wifi is also available.

The property provides one large double bedroom with ceiling fan, double wardrobe, dressing table with drawers and bedside cabinets,. A second (interconnecting) twin bedroom, bathroom with shower and an open plan kitchen diner/living area. The kitchen is well equipped with a full sized electric cooker with grill, microwave oven, fridge with freezer compartment, sandwich toaster, juicer and coffee maker etc. Other facilities include ironing board plus iron, CD player and two large oscillating fans.

Timeless and Atmospheric

  • 4 of 5

Angeliki is a small, well restored cottage/farm building next to and surrounded by a working farm. The terrace is fantastic with excellent views of the white mountains, the carob tree is not only beautiful but offers dappled shade. Although it is relatively close to the village (with tavernas ans shop) and about 20 minutes from two seaside towns we felt like we're deep in the country where little has changed in years. There are wild birds, plants, crickets, frogs and cicadas, along with spectacular mountains and gorgeous sunsets. The farm has chickens, pigs and goats and sheep feeding in the olive groves. It is full of the sounds of a farm (cockerels and sheep bells) as well as wild birds and insects.

We loved it and would come again in a heart beat apart from access issues. It is not the house's fault as it is a historic building but there are steps (1,2 or three) into every room and if you are arthritic it makes moving through the building a bit difficult. The bedrooms are large and comfortable but the living space is small though this is compensated for by the fantastic terrace. Maria comes into clean regularly and is really friendly as are the neighbours and the people in the taverna in the village. Great place, brilliant locality and really interesting area with historic Ancient Greek site and good beaches.

Beautiful Villa in the Cretan Countryside

  • 5 of 5

This little villa is perfect for those who prefer a quiet, private getaway over a typical crowded resort holiday. You have the opportunity to experience life as a Cretan would, in the idyllic countryside. As you sit on the patio sipping a glass of wine or a raki, you can take in the view of the beautiful White Mountains, while the bells of grazing goats sound in the distance, and roosters and chickens wander onto the deck. Flanked by orange, lemon trees and a mulberry tree, fresh fruit is available for the picking- (and it's delicious!) The outside area, the deck and the view are the main attraction, in my opinion.

Inside, the house is small but comfortable. We were there in June, and though the weather was hot, the house stayed quite cool; (there were fans available, but we didn't even need to use them). The kitchen was very well equipped for cooking, especially in comparison to other, similar places I've rented. When we first arrived, the house seemed slightly musty, but after airing it out a little while, that damp feeling went away- (they had gotten a lot of rain right before we came). Sheets and towels were supplied by the owner, and halfway into our stay, a maid came to clean the cottage and change the sheets and towels.

The property is in the village of Aptera, which boasts some very interesting archeological sites. In the main part of town (within walking distance) there are several tavernas (restaurants), that serve very good food, and seem to be open most of the time. Although Aptera is a small village, it is not too far from the city of Chania. In addition, there is a wonderful beach in the next village over, which is very secluded and quite private.

I highly recommend this place for people who don't want the typical resort holiday, who like to "get away from it all", who like to be around wildlife and beautiful scenery. It is probably necessary to have a car though at this place.

Writing this review has made me very sad. The holiday was so nice, it just flew by. I kind of wish I were still there......

Aptera village (until recently known as Megala Chorafia) is just five minutes drive from the

quiet sandy beaches at Kalami and ten minutes from Kalives, with its beach side

tavernas, shops and cafes, 15 minutes from Almirida beach, while Chania town, with it’s

beautiful Venetian Harbour, is 20 minutes away.

The village of Aptera is ideally situated for exploring the surrounding countryside, ancient

archaeological sites and the idyllic beaches of western Crete The town of Rethymnon is

also within easy reach (40 minutes), as is the spectacular Samaria Gorge. The

archaeological sites of Knossos and Phaestos are 1.5 hours drive from the village.

The 'Metoche' area on the eastern side is on a ridge which extends towards the ancient

town of ancient Aptera. 'Zacharias' is a cluster of houses on the hilltop to the west. Wild

flowers bloom along narrow roads on which shepherds move their flocks between fields.

There are three small tavernas, two cafes and a new mini-market in the village. The

archaeological remains of ancient Aptera, dating from the Minoan and Roman times, are

within walking distance of the village. Beyond these stands a Turkish castle, perched

strategically on the headland overlooking the sea.

Overshadowed by more famous sites at Knossos, the former city state of Aptera, near

Kalives, is not yet on the main tourist route and so can be investigated in relative peace.

Perched 230 metres high on a hill overlooking Souda bay it enjoys panoramic views of the

whole plain of Apokoronas and, for added interest, there is an impressive Turkish fort on a

nearby hilltop.

Aptera was once one of the most important city states in Western Crete. Aptera was an autonomous

city from the 6th-4th century BC and minted its own coins. It sent soldiers to aid the Spartans

during the 2nd Messenian War (668 BC) and was later an ally of Knossos during the Cretan civil

war in 220 BC. It had two harbours. The first is believed to be at Minoan at the north entrance to

Souda Bay, where Marathi beach can be found today. The second is thought to be at either Kalami

or Kalives. Aptera continued to be an important city during the Roman and first Byzantine periods

but it was destroyed by the Arabs in 823 AD. The Venetians built a fort there but this was destroyed

by the pirate Barbarosa. The city was also badly hit by an earthquake and eventually abandoned.

The second city of Crete, Chania old town is an archaeological wonderland with a unique

combination of buildings - Venetian, Turkish as well as Cretan. There are two harbours

which are packed with restaurants & shops. You can take a boat trip, visit the nautical

museum, or just wander around the narrow back streets. The Agora & Saturday street

market have the best fish, meat, fruit, vegetables - & don't miss 'leather alley'.
