Tuscan Umbrian border holiday cottage, secluded and private but not isolated.

Updated: 30-Aug-2016
Niccone valley luxurious comfortable cottage sleeps upto 10 in 5 bedrooms.

The house has been painstakingly restored over several years to maintain it's original character while adding contemporary luxury and comfort; Centuries-old stone and terracotta floors now have underfloor heating. The bathrooms are decorated with handmade Sicilian ceramic tiles while the baths and fixtures were brought from France and England

The house sleeps 10 in 4 1/2 double bedrooms (twin or double beds), each with it's own private bathroom.

The chestnut-beamed sitting room lies at its heart. With a huge fireplace, a rose-coloured sofa piled high with cushions, a coffee table laden with books and every inch of white wall hung with paintings, this and the large dining room are very inviting for house parties and entertaining.

The true heart of the house is probably the kitchen. With two sofas, a large open fireplace and dining table you never have to go anywhere else...

Lie under the shade of the olive trees or soak up the sun beside the 'Pebbletec' natural pool. With it's salt water filter the water is delightfully soft and un-chlorinated.

WIFI is available at the property.

- Pets are welcome. *Jenny has several dogs. They are all rescues and very sweet-natured but if you do not like dogs this may not be the right venue for you.

- The swimming pool is secluded but close to the house, and measures 6 metres x 12 metres (15m to the steps), with a 'Pebbletec' natural smooth stone surface and a salt water filtration system - no chlorine.

There is a terrace under a huge oak tree, with chandelier lighting and a very large open log-burning fireplace for outside seating and dining.

Home produced olive oil and wine is available.

Electricity is included.

Mobile telephone reception is good at the house.

The local village, Mercatale Di Cortona is 4 KM from the house and has 3 bar/cafe's, 2 butchers, a baker, 2 supermarkets, 3 banks and a wonderful trattoria - "Mimmi's".

There are several very good restaurants in the valley near the house.

The house has a washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, underfloor central-heating, open wood-burning fireplaces, TV with UK Sky satellite reception.

The Niccone valley is separated from Cortona and it's famous Valdichianna valley by a range of hills which has managed to keep life here tranquil and slow. The valley is given over almost entirely to agriculture, the main crops being vineyards, maize and sunflowers, together with the remanants of an earlier tradition of tabacco cultivation. Mercatale is our local village and offers facilities which a much larger town would envy including three bars, two banks, two supermarkets. the best butcher in the region and much more. When guests wish to dine out there are several good restaurants in the immediate area. Mercatale is fortunate enough to be home to "Trattoria Mimmi" one of the fast disappearing traditional retaurants where you don't have to do anything but eat. There are no menus. Mimmi just brings dish after dish to your table. Usually three or four different pastas varying with the season, followed by an array of roast meats, home grown vegetables, salads and desserts, all with her own delicious "genuino" wine. Mercatale is four kilometers from the house. Cortona is a twenty minute drive over the hill, and Umbertide, our nearest town with a big weekly market is twenty minutes away at the other end of the valley towards Gubbio, and Citta Di Castello. We are close to Perugia between Rome and Florence. Driving to Rome takes two and a half hours, to Florence an hour and a half. By rail from Terontola our local station, Rome is an hour and forty minutes by fast train, or two hours twenty by normal service. Florence by train is an hour and a half.

No picture can do this property justice, it is absolutly breathtaking and has to be seen to be believed.

Ca' Di Gosto is a large farmhouse situated in the very rural Niccone valley between Cortona in Tuscany and Umbertide just inside the border with Umbria.

While menus and cooking and eating good Italian food and lying by the swimming pool are the order of the day at Ca' di Gosto, guests will generally wish to make some day excursions during their stay. There are many day trips easily made from the house. Just twenty minutes away lies Cortona, the beautiful Etruscan hill town made more widely known by the success of the book "Under the Tuscan sun". Cortona, home to Fra Angelico's "Annunciation" perches high on a hillside above the plain of Valdichianna with breathtaking views to lake Trasimeno and across the valley to Montepulciano. Cortona is a town ancient piazzas, impossibly steep streets, steps and mysterious alleyways. It has a rich pedigree of Renaissance art, many traditional little restaurants and antique shops. For serious wine lovers Sr. Molesini is proprietor of one of the most interesting enotecas (wine shop) to be found in Tuscany, offering some of Italy's most prestigious and unusual wines, and conducting wine tastings, instruction and tours of a local winery.

Arezzo, also nearby is an historic and beautiful town. In addition to it's monthly antique fair the Basilica di San Fracesco is home to some of the best known frescoes of the town's most famous artist Piero della Francesco.

The house owner who lives in a small cottage in the Gardens. Jenny Nichols is an English freelance chef. She was trained at the ‘Cordon Bleu Cooking Institute’ in London longer ago than she cares to remember (but back when "wonderful English cook" was still generally perceived to be an oxymoron) and for the last 35 years she has been cooking around the world mainly for private clients, specializing in Mediterranean cuisine, cakes and desserts. Jenny has been based in London, Los Angeles, and for the last fifteen years in Italy, in Rome and Umbria. She has cooked for clients in many different countries. Her cooking reflects these international influences. Jenny’s two great passions are food and gardening (actually making compost and preparing lunch for the dogs are probably just as high on the list). Her vegetable garden is as important to her as the stove. This love of watching her ingredients grow from seed to end up on the dining table, nurturing and loving them every step of the way makes Jenny a committed supporter of the Slow Food Movement and of the philosophy of taking care of our precious natural resources. An important and underlying principle of Jenny’s cooking is that nothing at all goes to waste. (One of her courses is “Cooking with leftovers”)

Surrounded by five acres of ancient olive trees and grape vines which produce award-winning olive oil, and a very drinkable, crisp Greghetto/Chardonnay 'genuino' white wine, the property has a large pond, an organic vegetable garden, and contented hens wandering gently around the grounds laying the most delicious eggs
