Updated: 23-Oct-2016
Only a stones throw from the East Somerset Steam Railway station.

The Old Engine Shed is a self-catering accommodation situated in the idyllic setting next to the East Somerset Railway in Cranmore, Shepton Mallet.

Formally used to store the engines to bring stone for the nearby quarry at Waterlip, to join the main line at Cranmore, it has now been converted into a 3 bedrooms holiday let, that can accommodate up to 10 guests (6 Adults and 4 Children) for Fortnightly, weekly or weekend breaks (3 nights min).

Offering the nearby tourist cities of Wells (9 Miles) and Bath (22 miles) as well as the beautiful town of Bradford-on-Avon (22 Miles) and also the Glastonbury festival site (7 Miles), with also the Clarks Village complex (15 miles) if retail therapy is required. Also the accommodation is only 6 miles from the Royal Bath and West Showground, and therefore make it an ideal base for Exhibitions and shows throughout the year.

On your door step is the Strode Arms Public House within walking distance situated in front of the Duck pond, and the East Somerset Railway, within sight.

About the Owner

Tristan and I are both directors of a building contractors, that was founded in 1919. During 1977 one of the buildings used by the company for storage was offered too Tristan's Great Grandfather to purchase. Then during the turn of the current century it was surplus to requirements, and therefore planning was sought to convert it into a dwelling. Planning was finally granted in 2007 to convert the building into a Holiday Let. The next 8 years was spent on the conversion, in between other projects. The Old Engine Shed was finally completed in the summer of 2015.

Lovely property clean and very well equipped..we were a family of 7 with a small dog... this is a great Base for exploring the surrounding area and the well preserved east steam valley railway is at the end of the drive... there is a lovely pub the Strode Inn which is a 5 min walk which offers excellent food but not on a Monday! they also accept dogs... The property is great for walkers too I would definitely recommend this property to others..

Nostalgia in the engine shed

  • 5 of 5

From start to finish this accommodation was perfect. Quiet and peaceful setting, comfortable but also spacious and light and airy. Yes, the beds were rather hard but gave a wonderful nights sleep. The extra touches were much appreciated especially the milk in the fridge, thank you for that. We were blessed with good weather which does make a difference as we were able to sit on the patio in the evening sun, until the bugs started to bite anyway! We did not eat in much, nor did we use the Strode Arms (no food served on Mondays!) but we found other places nearby, the Duke of Cumberland, Radstock, about 3 miles away good for Sunday lunch and the fish and chip shop at the cross roads towards Shepton Mallet (Co-op nearby) were both good. The really, really best thing about this place is its proximity to the East Somerset Railway. Literally a steam railway at the bottom of the garden. It became "our" railway for our stay. We were transported back in time, even the footpaths by the line full of wild flowers were reminiscent of a long lost youth. No one is possessive either, one can walk along the line and on the platform at all times. We visited when they were in steam and working and also when it had closed down for the weekend, still accessible and still nostalgic. We are not a family who go back to places, our philosophy being that there are lots more places to visit, but we might just change our minds here for another step back into nostalgia and knowing that we shall find an exceptional place to stay.

A great property in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Great property, well equipped, very clean and tidy. Perfect base for us to explore Somerset from.

My partner and our 3 children (<7) had a great week at the property. Everything we could have wanted was available and the kids loved playing out in the garden. There is plenty to do nearby and the Railway at the bottom of the drive is great value for money too.

A perfect little get away.

A lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We just had a great weekend staying in the Old Engine Shed for a 70th birthday. There were 6 adults, 2 children and a small dog and we had plenty of room. The Old Engine Shed has been renovated to a very high standard through out. The garden is lovely and big and our children and dog spent lots of time running around it! There's lots to do and see in the area and we enjoyed going on the steam engine. Karen was really helpful and responded to any questions quickly. I would definitely recommend this as a place to stay.

Lovely, spacious holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely Easter holiday at the Old Engine Shed! The house is in a rural location but perfectly located for sightseeing and days out, with lovely views of countryside from the property. It's a short driving distance from the Cheddar Gorge, Bath, Frome and Wells. It's beautifully decorated and finished to a very high standard. The rooms are very spacious and uncluttered and with a TV in every room we felt quite spoilt although there was far too much to do in the area to stay in and watch TV! Our daughter was thrilled to find a drawer full of DVDs in the lounge and the wine and chocolates left for us by the owner were a lovely touch. The kitchen was well equipped for basic meals, for more advanced cooking you may need some more paraphernalia but we managed fine, and we cooked every day. Everything feels and looks brand new, shiny and clean. We found the house very warm despite the cold weather thanks to the underfloor heating and eventually we turned the heating right down as we found it too warm - there was no need to pack all those jumpers! The lounge / dining area was spacious and comfortable with lovely sofas and comfy cushions - certainly more than big enough for 4 adults and 2 children (and a pooch). There's even garden furniture if you fancy a glass of wine in the garden, with a small play area for children tucked away behind the house. The small negative was that we all found the beds a little too hard (and two of us prefer a harder mattress!), but this is a matter of preference and certainly not something that would put us off coming again. If we did come again (which we may well do - there's lots more to see in the area) we would bring a soft mattress topper, which I would definitely recommend to anyone who doesn't like a super firm mattress. Overall, a gorgeous holiday home we can wholeheartedly recommend!
