Originally a mining captain's home, Careless Whisper sits on a quiet country lane which forms part of the Devoran to Portreath Mineral Tramway coast to coast cycle track.
Set in a World Heritage Site, the detached cottage features a lovely sunny front garden with a large gravel parking area and is perfect for walkers and cyclists.
Historic Unity Woods are close by with a stunning annual carpet of Spring bluebells.
Hi. My wife and I live half a mile from Careless Whisper at the top of the valley. Our son and daughter have left for university studying town planning and architecture. We moved down from York 20 years ago to take up jobs at the local paper, the West Briton, where I was deputy editor and my wife was a columnist. I am an author (you can find me on Amazon) and my wife works in marketing for a holiday cottage company. We have a Springer and love the walks around the Poldice Valley. My wife also rides her horses along the many bridleways and the cycle track. I often struggle to keep up with her on my bike, but she runs up hills and walks down them. Not a good combination. We hope you enjoy your holiday in Cornwall. We like many others from upcountry, loved it so much, we stayed.
Garry Kay purchased this cottage in 2005
We bought Careless Whisper 10 years ago at an auction in Redruth for double our agreed top price. It always looked so idyllic as we rode, cycled or walked past on the cycle track and it seemed a far better prospect than most other pension options. We spent months and thousands on it, but hope you agree it was well worth it.
The obvious benefit is that it sits in the centre of a unique World Heritage site halfway along the coast to coast cycle track which follows the old mineral tramway, which has been designed for ease of use by families and cyclists of all fitness levels as there are no steep hills at any point on its entire length. If you find yourself struggling up a hill, you missed one of the many granite marker points
The photos didn't do it justice, when we opened the door to this very cute cottage we were all thrilled. It is clean and well kept and very comfortable.
We loved being in a peaceful country lane where you can cycle or walk and explore - just behind the cottage are the old tin mines , where the kids played everyday .
There is a fantastic new wood burner which made for some very cosy nights in after all the long walks .
We want to go back !
Unbedingt empfehlenswert!
Firstly, thanks for letting us stay in this lovely cottage. The location is certainly tranquil and very centrally positioned for exploring. An evening walk onto the adjacent Poldice Mine site is recommended for amazing sunsets and the chance to see Greater Horseshoe Bats.
The photos give a proper impression of what to expect and I would echo previous comments: e.g. a washing machine would be really useful and I would also add a microwave, although there is limited space in the kitchen to put it. The double bed was really really comfy but one of our children found the mattress springs impossible to sleep directly on and slept on top of the duvet instead. The curtains in the room with two beds were also very thin, so the sun woke the kids really early. All in all, we had a very enjoyable stay, with amazing weather.
Had a fab 4 night (January) stay at this lovely cottage. Perfect location and easy access to all areas, but very peaceful and quiet. The log burner made the cottage really warm and cosy after returning from cold, wet and windy outings! The cottage had everything we needed and Garry & Ginny were very friendly and helpful. The neighbours were also very nice when we took a stroll down the lane! The only negative were the mattresses - we had to borrow toppers from nearby family in order to cushion the springs. Overall our stay and experience were 5* and if the mattresses were changed we wouldn't hesitate to go back and recommend the cottage to others.
We found the cottage to be very comfortable and warm The location was perfect for visiting many beaches in the area We enjoy a pub lunch and there was lots to choose from, all very dog friendly The garden was perfect for the dogs very secure and safe The cream teas waiting for us on our arrival was the perfect welcome to Cornwall Thanks for a perfect week Linda Colin
