Overview

About the property

Secluded sheep farmhouse accommodating 12 in 3 separate cottages

The ancient Irish name of this group of farmhouse cottages reveals a lot. It’s “Barralach”, meaning “over the lake”. The lake in question is one of Ireland’s most beautiful, lying in a special area of conservation. Barralach enjoys spectacular views over the lake and up to the dramatic peaks of the Macgillycuddy Reeks or mountains. [Barralach is pronounced “baralack”. A fluent Irish speaker will render the final “k” very softly! Try it; you can do it too!] This secluded settlement is nevertheless close to the hikers’ Kerry Way and only ten minutes from the shops and pubs of Glenbeigh village. Three of the cottages provide separate accommodation for the different elements of your party, with privacy and independence. The 14-seater dining table, however, and the great wood stoves in the very spacious Main Cottage bring the entire group joyfully together. Our guidebooks and maps ensure you make the most of your outings from Barralach. And if the weather turns inclement, the large assortment of wellington boots, raincoats and extensive collections of books, videos and games will keep you going. Immersed in nature, you will delight in Barralach’s mountain sheep, hares, rabbits, weasels, birds & magically ever-changing views. You'll love our crystalline deep-spring water. Our housekeeper may be available to provide excellent meals of the finest local fare "a la Barralach!".

Guestbook comments from the manager

A place of tranquility and peacefulness

We were a family of nine and stayed at Barralach cottages for two weeks. We enjoyed the tranquility and peacefulness of this wonderful location. The views reached from the sea on the left over lake Caragh in the centre up to the highest Irish mountains on the right and were absolutely magnificent. The colours and moods kept changing with the weather and the time of day and made you raise your head again and again when actually reading a book. The surroundings offered plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities including beautiful hiking trails. The layout over three cottages gave everybody enough privacy when needed and helped to really relax. The kitchen was exceptionally well equipped and all appliances were in good working condition. Many details in the cottages were thought out very well and showed that they were used by the owners themselves. For us it was one of the best self-catering houses we have ever been to and we would certainly like to come back one day. Thank you to Peter and his family for letting us be there!

Outstanding property, great for groups

  • 5 of 5

This remote and beautiful property was perfect for our family visit to Ireland. Although there were eleven of us spread over three buildings, we never lacked room. This is a truly unique place, high up on a hill with magnificent views and only sheep for neighbors. The main building is homey and comfortable, filled with a spacious library and interesting artifacts from the area. The kitchen and dining areas served us well with ample dishes and cookware. Any group looking for a getaway in Kerry would find it both charming and nicely located to points of interest.

Unbelievable, Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

The views are breathtaking and the location is perfect for a stay in Kerry. While staying on the mountain you can easily imagine how it was in centuries past. The quiet, the air, watching the sheep dot the mountains, noticing how the clouds come in and fill the valleys, then clear out and again exposing the fantastic views. And then there's the Milky Way at night. I believe I haven't seen a darker sky with the stars and planets as bright since we were at Organ Pipe in Arizona 25 years ago. It would be hard to say which had better viewing.

The cottages are beautiful, comfortable, clean, and have all the modern conveniences. The main cottage where everyone spent most of our time except for sleeping has breathtaking views from many of the rooms with large windows. All three cottages were very comfortable and just perfect.

The village of Glenbeigh is a stones throw away with a great pub at the Glenbeigh Hotel. Gas and a small super-market are also in town.

Exceptional

  • 4 of 5

Exceptional location! Rough drive to get to property but worth the view. House was comfortable for a family with separate cottages. Having the sheep was so fun, but the sheep doo everywhere in the yard made it difficult to walk out to see the property. Betty cooked two meals and it was outstanding! Exceeded expectations!!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this review and I’m delighted your stay and Betty’s meals exceeded expectations. Thank you also for the fine painting of the cottages that you left behind. Your comment about the sheep droppings gives me a chance to emphasise that Barralach is indeed on a sheep farm. There are free range sheep around the property most of the time, to the delight of all. We keep the yard between the cottages clear of droppings by closing the gates, so you can walk from cottage to cottage without risk of stepping on something. In addition there is a pooper-scooper to clear up any more troubling problems beyond the yard! But I am sorry you were inconvenienced.

Fantastic getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Incredible views and place to stay. Great for hiking and exploring. Very peaceful location and also nicely situated for day trips in the Kerry area. We hiked all the trails, jogged around the lake, swam in the lake, but mostly took in the breathtaking views.

Adorable stay in the Ring of Kerry

  • 5 of 5

The place was adorable - sheep roaming around, unbelievable views, AMAZING kitchen table for games and hosting our big group, and an extremely comfortable space for our big group. We would absolutely come back - and have even shared this place with friends looking to visit Ireland.

Family Visit

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our children and grandchildren had the good fortune of staying at these cottages for a week as a major part of our Ireland vacation. This place is absolutely marvelous. Everyone in our family, from the oldest to the youngest found something to enjoy. The accommodations are clean, modern and generous, extremely comfortable and surrounded by wonderful views of the Kerry County countryside. Oh, and sheep, too. Highly recommended.

Located right on the Kerry Way and two miles from the Ring of Kerry, Barralach is a hill-walker’s paradise. Our own 10 acres and the thousands of surrounding acres of open hillsides provide pasture for flocks of mountain sheep and lambs. We are close to the mid-point between the great golf courses of Killarney, Tralee, Waterville and Ballybunion and are only 10 minutes from Dooks 18-hole links course. We overlook the salmon and trout lakes and rivers of the Caragh system. The great Atlantic surfing strand of Rossbeigh and the quieter beaches of Dooks are close by. The fine restaurants and pubs of Killorglin and Glenbeigh, on the Ring of Kerry, are easily reached. Our brochure will guide you to the best eateries, and to superb and memorable activities such as horse riding on Rossbeigh strand or in Killarney National Park, visits to the Skellig and Blasket Islands, outings with the Dingle dolphin or magnificent walks on the Kerry Way, and drives on the Wild Atlantic Way. Skellig Michael is not only a Unesco Heritage site but now also a hideaway of Luke Skywalker of Star Wars, and is easily visited from our cottages.

Other Activities, all around us are: mountain biking, photography; landscape painting; bog vegetation lichens & natural springs; hundreds of acres for young and old.

Geology, showing dramatic effects of the Ice Ages in the shaping of the landscape all around us and the deposit of erratic boulders.

History including the Kerry Bog Village, the astonishing 350 million year-old tetrapod tracks, Gallarus Oratory and many Mass Rocks.
