About the property

Your holiday at our property can be as quiet or busy as you choose.

Maes yr Eglwys Wen sits in the middle of fields in the Coed y Brenin forest, just north of Dolgellau in southern Snowdonia. Approached by a private road, the house is tranquil, comfortable and very well-equipped.

Our preferred changeover days are a Friday, weekend breaks are available Friday to Monday or mid week specials Monday to Friday out of high season. We are ideally situated to make the most of a mid week break in this tranquil area of North Wales.

It offers very easy access to the famous mountain bike trails of the Coed y Brenin forest and the innumerable local walks. Novices can easily rent bikes locally and cycle the family trails. The house is also only 25 minutes away from North Wales' fun new attractions, Zip World and Bounce Below, which are a great day out for the whole family. Downhill mountain bike trails at Antur Stiniog, Blaenau Ffestiniog are also a fun day out for the more adventurous in your group.

Originally built as a forester's cottage in the 1920s, the house was extended and completely refurbished in 2014. The old cottage now contains four bedrooms - two large doubles, a standard double and a bedroom with two single beds. There are two bathrooms and an additional toilet. The house can accommodate eight people but we prefer to offer it to a maximum of six.

We added a large living area to the old house with a high vaulted ceiling and large windows. This room leads straight out onto a sunny and sheltered patio, perfect for summer meals or quiet reading. We provide a barbecue and eight outdoor chairs and tables.

The kitchen is very well-equipped with an induction range cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. We also have a breadmaker and microwave. The dining table seats eight in comfort. The sitting area has sofa and easy chairs as well as the wood burning stove which heats the entire house.

Maes yr Eglwys Wen has internet access, satellite TV and radio and DVD/CD player.

The four bedrooms are all newly furnished to a very high standard with chests of drawers, hanging space and bedside tables. The floors in the old house are polished wood while the new building has slate tiles. The spacious bathrooms also have slate flooring throughout. A high chair and travel cot are provided.

The house is surrounded by a fenced garden. Although it is not huge, there is plenty of space for children to run around. The parking area can comfortably accommodate two cars. An outside hose allows mountain bikers to clean their bicycles after a tough day on the trails.

The house is about 200 metres from the nearest public highway. Those seeking a quiet and untroubled holiday will find Maes yr Eglwys Wen an ideal place. But the house is not remote. It is about ten minutes to Dolgellau, a small market town with supermarkets, Boots, banks and plenty of pubs and restaurants.

The sandy beaches of southern Snowdonia are less than half an hour away. Harlech with is majestic castle and miles of sandy beaches and Barmouth, a traditional seaside town. Cader Idris, one of the highest mountains in Snowdonia and a challenging walk, can be got to by car in about twenty minutes. The beautiful Mawddach estuary is closer, and offers good walks and easy cycling routes on the Mawddach Trail. We are also only 20 minutes away from CAT, the centre for alternative technology.

We refurbished and extended the house to the highest environmental standards. The heating uses renewable wood fuel and in summer the bulk of electricity is provided by solar panels. The high levels of insulation make the house warm even on the coldest nights.

About Karen (Holiday Cottage Services)

The house was bought by the present owners' father in 1972 after it had been left unoccupied for three years. We completely rebuilt and extended it in 2013/14. We paid particular attention to creating a near carbon-neutral property by using wood pellets for heating and solar panels for electricity.

The extension was carefully planned to be as unobtrusive as possible in this unspoilt area. That's why the new extension sits behind the old house. We used local architects and builders who gave us quite exceptional service.

Karen (Holiday Cottage Services) purchased this house in 1972

Why Karen (Holiday Cottage Services) chose Wales

The house is about as quiet as you can find in England and Wales. One previous guest said you'd have to go a remote Scottish island to find comparable calm - and absence of artificial light.

What makes this house unique

Older Snowdonia properties tend to be very difficult to heat, dark and to have very low ceilings, particularly in the bedrooms. However if you are looking for comfort and space as well as lots of natural light, this is an excellent house to visit.

Our house is an ideal base to explore North Wales, with the majority of attractions no more than a 30 minute drive away. You get the tranquility of our lovely secluded property snuggled in the mountains, with the added bonus of being only a 20 minute drive from the nearest beach. North Wales is mountains and coast, your stay at our house will ensure you get the best of both.

An expertly converted cottage in a super location.

The accommodation was of a very high standard, extremely clean and the welcome pack was most....welcome! Plenty of space for 5 adults and 3 children and a superb location for the mountain biking members of the family. We only encounters 2 issues that may or may not be solvable - the pellet burning stove was very efficient, too efficient, making the lounge area extremely hot simply to heat the water!! Maybe think of another way of heating the water during the hot summer months (we were very lucky and enjoyed wall to wall sunshine all week!) The 'green' roof concepts on both flat roofs is a very eco friendly idea but unfortunately they are also perfect breeding grounds for swarms of midges and mosquitos. This meant we were unable to enjoy breakfast outside even though the weather invited us to do so!! And we all returned with more than a few nasty bites!! Having said all that I do think we will be returning but maybe not during the hot season - a winter break sounds very inviting!!

Owner's Response: Dear Glenn, Thank you for the appreciative comments. We are very glad you enjoyed your stay at Maes yr Eglwys Wen. You mention two problems that you experienced. The first was that the main room was too warm during the unusually hot weather of your stay. Perhaps this room is indeed over-insulated. We find that on very sunny days in summer all the doors can be left open and the blinds closed, keeping the temperature reasonable. The second worry was the midges that made it difficult to remain outside on the terrace at mealtimes. For a few weeks every year, the midges in rural Wales can be troublesome (we have not had any problems ourselves with mosquitoes) until the swallows and the bats have got the population under control. Insect repellent candles, widely available in local stores, will deter the midges in the early summer; we keep a supply in our outside store which guests are very welcome to use. Thank you again for your comments. Chris and Charlotte

Great for families

  • 5 of 5

Our family, seven of us, spent Christmas week at Maes yr Eglwys Wen and it proved to be perfect for us. It is a clean and we'll maintained property and we'll would have no hesitation in recommending it with a rider concerning location. It is quite remote being about 2 miles, on narrow roads, from the A470. For us the remoteness was excellent, no traffic noise etc. and no light pollution, the only noise to be heard is the breeze in the trees the river and sometimes sheep in the field surrounding the cottage. As for the actual accommodation it is in two parts, an old stone built bungalow has been converted into four bedrooms, a family bathroom one bedroom with an en - suite extention. All the beds are very good quality and most comfortable. There is a modern extention which blends very well with the old cottage. The extention comprises an open plan kitchen dining room and lounge with TV and wi-fi. The whole property is heated with a pellet burning fire which also heats the water, there is an outside store which is well stocked with 10kg. bags of pellets. The extention and en-suite extention benefit from under floor heating. The whole property was very comfortable and we will be booking again.

If you want to be close to a town, shops and a pub, this property is not for you. If you want peace and quiet, mountain biking, forest walks and love the countryside, you will not find better, we were totally delighted with this property.
