5 bedroom Provencal villa, heated pool, air-con, big secluded garden, 4 bath/5WC

Updated: 04-Oct-2016
5 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (1 e/s), 2 shower rooms (1 e/s), 5 WCs, sleeps 10

Built in 2002 in the typical 'bastide' style of Provence, this villa is situated in a quiet location on the slopes of a gentle hill on the outskirts of the beautiful mediaeval Duchy of Uzes, giving it lovely views. It is the owners' 2nd home.

The town lies close to the River Gardon and the famous 2000-year-old Pont du Gard. The area gives an authentic taste of the Midi, with its rolling hills and vineyards, its Roman remains and the hot sun.

The villa is a 12 min walk to the town centre. It is light and spacious, being very comfortably furnished and equipped to a high standard.

The layout is unusual with the bedrooms and bathrooms in three separate areas in the villa, all leading to the central living room and kitchen/diner with its long covered terrace.

The garden is about 1/3 of an acre (approximately 1450 square metres), mainly laid to lawn with masses of shrubs and many trees. The 60 sq m pool is at the centre of the main lawn and is 'L' shaped. The length is 11.5 metres & the width is 4.5 metres. It is 2 metres deep at the villa end and 1 metre deep at the other end. At the shallow end is a 2.5 metres square beach area which runs from 10 centimetres deep at the edge to 70 centimetres deep at the point where it steps down into the main pool. The pool is overlooked by a 19 sq m covered terrace with a long dining table and seating for 12 and gas & charcoal BBQs

Facilities:: (i) The living room has a TV + BBC, etc satellite, DVD, VCR and portable radio/cassette/CD player

(ii) Each bedroom has a large fan on a stand

(iii) Each bedroom has an electric anti-bug device (pill or liquid refills are not supplied)

(iv) Each bedroom has large built-in wardrobes with mirrored doors + plenty of hangers

(v) The villa has air conditioning in the living area and the four bedrooms in the main house, which was installed in 2011

(vi) There are gas and charcoal BBQs which can be used for meals on either terrace

(vii) Each of the three terraces is amply furnished with tables & chairs

(viii) There are plenty of sun loungers and parasols for use round the pool

(ix) Bed linen, bath towels and pool towels are supplied

(x) End-of-stay cleaning is provided as part of the service

(xi) The pool is regularly cleaned during each stay

(xii) The garden is maintained during each stay when necessary but every effort is made to mow the lawns in between stay

Specific requirements of applicants:: (i) The owner has a detailed inventory and villa management document, which is supplied when a booking is made and it is updated well in advance of guests' arrival.

(ii) If there is any item of importance to an applicant which is not in the villa, the owner is happy to consider supplying the same.

Additional information:: (i) The owner is very happy to discuss any aspect of the villa and to provide further information about the area.

(ii) There is a file on the table in the sitting room which contains the inventory, the villa management document, the guest book, a restaurant file and brochures and leaflets on the many places of interest to visit and activities to enjoy in the area.

(iii) Copies of instructions for all appliances (mostly in French) are also kept in the villa for guests to use.

(iv) The owner has a caretaker living a few doors away and who can always be contacted if needed.

(v) The grass is cut once a fortnight.

(vi) The owner is always contactable by 'phone and e-mail (unless she notifies guests to the contrary)

(vi) The owner hopes that these arrangements will enable visitors to settle in quickly and comfortably and so get the best out of their stay.

About the Owner

We are an English couple who found themselves by chance in the Place aux Herbes in the centre of Uzes in November 2001, fell for the place as so many others have done and were determined to buy a home there. We live in London and Uzes gives us a home in a world that's a million miles from how we live in England.

Delightful villa walking distance to Uzes

  • 5 of 5

We have had the pleasure of staying twice at Elisabeth's delightful Villa. It is very well furnished and well kept with a spacious sitting room fully equipped kitchen and good sized bedrooms. Everything works with lots of fridges/ freezers and is spotlessly clean on arrival. The house has morning and evening terraces, the latter going onto the garden and the swimming pool. The pool is a good size and set in a delightful garden which is very private despite the proximity of other houses. On our second visit the house was full to capacity but did not feel crowded (we were 10 adults and 2 young children). The friendly house manager lives just over the road and is only too willing to sort out any problems.

A particular advantage of the villa is that it is only about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Uzes which is delightful and has an abundant supply of shops, restaurants, cafes etc. The centre is a pedestrianised medieval city with squares that host popular markets twice a week. There are two big supermarkets on the outskirts.

The old adage that you won't want to leave once you are here applies and with everything on the doorstep you don't have to but Avignon, Nimes and the Pont du Gard are all nearby.

Overall a lovely villa with an excellent pool with everything you need close to hand and which we highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review. You have given lots of information of the sort that future holiday makers look for, so that they can feel reassured about how things actually are. We find that this is really helpful, as enquirers often ask about these things and an independent source of information makes a real difference to them. We were happy that your holiday worked out well for you and look forward to your next visit, which is now in the calendar. Best wishes, Elisabeth

Relaxing holiday in lovely villa

  • 5 of 5

This villa was exactly as advertised, spacious, welcoming and well maintained. There was plenty of room for our extended family group (five adults, two four-year-olds). The wonderful pool and effective air-con were particularly welcome as temperatures reached 35c most days.

Uzes is an attractive town, and the centre is about 15 mins walk from the villa (fine, except during the hottest parts of the day). Although the one-way, often busy ring road presented some initial challenges, we orientated ourselves after a couple of days and enjoyed the excellent market, shops and many restaurants and cafes; other tourist attractions include a castle, cathedral, medieval garden and the Haribo museum. Slightly further afield, we also enjoyed visits to Lussan, Castillon-du-Gard and the Pont du Gard. We didn't travel far on this visit, but hope to return and explore the wider area once our children are a bit older.

Thank you Elisabeth for letting us stay in your beautiful house. (It was particularly nice having a piano to play!)

Beautiful house, Fabulous pool, Delightful town

  • 5 of 5

Our large family group of 8 Adults, and 3 young children have had a marvellous 2 weeks here, with plenty of space, particularly outside where there are 3 separate sitting areas as well as loungers around the pool, surrounded by a beautiful private garden. I must mention that the saltwater pool is the best we have experienced in 4 successive villa holidays in France, and the beach entrance removed the fear of the younger children as they could gently work their way into the pool.

This was also a very big advantage to my adult daughter who is a wheelchair user and unable to stand or walk - she could also slowly work her way in.

We were a bit concerned about how Ruth would be able to cope, but the bedroom downstairs was fine and benefitted from having a wet room shower.

We were lucky enough to be in Uzes on Bastille Day, and the firework display, viewed from the upstairs bedroom was truly amazing.

I must take this opportunity to thank Claude, who is always ready to help and is a really amiable chap and every inch a true Frenchman. A big thank you from all of us.

Uzes itself is lively and vibrant, with lots of narrow interesting streets, and many wonderful shops and cafes. Unanimously agreed by all of us as our favourite French town to date beating Cognac and Carcassonne (in our opinion).

During our stay we never saw rain, and the sun shone all day every day.

On my last day at 7am I sat by the pool and watched 2 hot air balloons slowly make their way over our villa, and the only sound was the intermittent noise of heated air being pumped in.

What a lasting memory, and what a great holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. We were especially glad to learn that your daughter was able to take full advantage of the pool and her room with its en-suite. She is the first non-walking guest we've had. I've always felt it should be a good place for someone in her position but I've never actually had the experience. It's always such a pleasure to know that guests have had such a good time.

A Lovely Place To Stay

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of ten spanning three generations, including two young children and two babies. This was the third time we had holidayed in France in recent years, so we knew what we were looking for/needed.

Before booking I had discussed our needs with Elisabeth, the owner, who was very helpful from start to finish.

The villa has good accomodation, very comfortable and is well equipped. The pool is exceptional and as a result of all this we spent a lot of time at the villa. During the stay the local 'helper' Claude made you feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble for him.

Uzes itself is a lovely medieval town, which we visited several times. We also visited Nimes for the Roman Amphitheatre, Agues Mortes, St Quentin la Poterie and the Haribo Museum on the pretence it was for the kids!

Overall a lovely holiday, also helped by the weather and we were all very sorry it was only for a week.

Lovely Villa

  • 5 of 5

I celebrated my 60th birthday with some friends at Elizabeth's lovely villa. I couldn't have picked a better place. The villa was perfect for us - 8 adults - large, so relaxing and just what we needed. It is fantastic to have a pool where you can have a proper swim and the garden is mature and so colourful. The house is great - so many bathrooms and lovely terraces.

Claude and his wife Anik welcomed us and were very helpful indeed.

Uzes is a wonderful town. I had visited before but for my friends it was the first time and they loved it. We had quite a lazy time but there are lots of places to visit in the area.

A great choice!

Ticked all our boxes

  • 5 of 5

We hired this villa with a view to having a family get together with three generations from us older folks to two little toddlers (4 & 18 months) and this ticked every box.

Plenty of room and facilities for the ten of us, a pool that was good enough for adults to stretch out and swim in but was great for the nippers as well and a well equipped kitchen and barbecues etc for us to be able to cook for ourselves with no problem.

Claude is a genuinely nice man who shows you around the place and tolerated my schoolboy French without flinching.

It is a ten minute walk into Uzes which is a fabulous place and a short drive to the Pont du Gard and an even shorter drive to the Haribo museum. For a longer day out, the Carmargue National Park is a must, but then we love wildlife.

For supplies it's only five minutes drive to the Intermarche, which has everything you will ever need food and drink wise.

To cap it all, Elisabeth has been very responsive and helpful with all our questions and queries, and we can't thank her enough for facilitating such a terrific family holiday

From the Owner

We first saw the property in May 2002 when it was a shell of a house sitting on a third of an acre of rubble. We were completely entranced by the way the villa stood at an angle to the rest of the other villas in the locality, perched on its little mound as if it was having a conversation with the Duke's 11th century castle on the opposite hill. The villa gave us lots of rooms for family and guests, with scope to extend it (as we later did) and a garden area that needed to be planted from scratch. The garden lies all round the villa and within only a few years it had grown from waste land to offer a variety of lawns, flowers, shrubs and trees with the pool in the centre of the back garden. The garden gave us an opportunity to create our own unique outdoor space.

Uzes is a beautifully restored mediaeval town on a low hill in the Garrigues hills above Nimes. It is about 15 mins by car from the freshwater swimming on the beaches of the River Gardon at Collias and the famous Roman Pont du Gard, about 35 mins from the city of Nimes with its Roman Arena, about 40 mins from the papal city of Avignon, about 45 mins from the grottos of the Ardeche, about 50 mins from Orange, with its Roman theatre, and from Montpellier with its long sandy beaches. The centre of Uzes is pedestrianised with narrow cobbled streets. There are many little antique, art and furnishing shops. There is a famous market on Saturdays selling country produce, Provencal pottery and lace. Pavement restaurants where itinerant musicians serenade the diners are the favourite venue for evenings. The Haribo factory and the Museum of Toys and Trains provide entertainment for children. Horse riding, quad biking, tennis and golf and all to be found in and around the town.Vineyards abound.

Other Activities: canoeing, quad-biking, famous Saturday market, street music, open-air night life

Golf: Uzes has an 8-hole Golf course. Nearby Nimes has an 18-hole Golf course.

From the Owner

Guests love this villa, as do we, for the space it offers, the large pool with its 'beach' area, the varied garden and the seclusion. Yet it is only a 10 to 12 minute walk from the centre of Uzes. This provides a huge benefit, as it means that one can walk into town of an evening to enjoy the many restaurants & no car is needed, teenagers can safely walk into town and back and their parents don't need to drive to collect them and, if one walks in the opposite direction to the town, the fields of the open countryside are only 5 to 6 minutes' walk away. We have planned the villa and the gardens so that all can have peaceful holidays there, swimming, playing games, enjoying the sun or reading quietly in shady corners without having to leave the premises at all. Of course there are so many diversions and places of interest to see in and around Uzes, that there is no shortage of interesting things to do if one would like to leave the villa.
