Overview

About the property

The Old Post Office is a Grade II listed building just across the road from the Coalbrookdale museums and just up the road from Ironbridge. It is right in the heart of the World Heritage Site and makes a perfect base from which to explore the seat of the Industrial Revolution and the Ironbridge Gorge.

*****If you would like to stay for 5 or 6 nights, please contact me for a price*****

The area is popular with walkers and cyclists and there are a number of great walks on the doorstep. There is a secure cycle shed at the back of the house.

If you don't fancy driving (or walking) there is a bus stop right outside where you can catch a bus to Ironbridge or go into Telford to do some shopping or visit the large town park.

We have recently refurbished the house with comfort as our main priority. There are two large sofas to relax on and the beds all have memory foam toppers & linen is provided. There is free Wi-Fi and a selection of DVDs, games and books for all ages.

On the ground floor there is a sitting room with a log burner. This originally had the post office counter and retains the large shop-style window. There is also a dining room and a modern fitted kitchen on the ground floor with a fridge freezer and washer/dryer.

Upstairs there is a large double bedroom with a kingsize bed, a second bedroom with 3ft bunk beds and a modern bathroom with electric shower other the bath. There is on-street parking immediately outside. The house has no garden but there is a small terrace area outside the kitchen with a small table and two chairs for a glass of something in the sunshine or a cup of coffee (or a cigarette).

NEARBY.....

3 minute walk to the museum café & gift shop (open 10 - 5pm every day ,we recommend the breakfast baguettes).

3 minute walk to The Museum of Iron.

3 minute walk to Enginuity (interactive museum for children).

2 minute walk to nearest pub.

5 minute walk to children's play park.

15 minute walk into Ironbridge, the museum of the Gorge & nearest shop (Co-op with car parking, and pay a visit to the antique centre behind it)

5 miles to Telford -the nearest large town- which has many shopping opportunities and a large town park.

16 miles to Shrewsbury, one of England's finest medieval market towns and home to the fictional Brother Cadfael.

The Museums use a passport ticket system, which on their website says....

''The Annual Passport Ticket represents fantastic value. It allows unlimited daytime admission to all 10 Ironbridge Gorge Museums, during normal opening hours, so you can return as often as you like for one year. If after 12 months you have still not visited particular sites, you can return at any time in the future to make one free visit to the sites that you've missed''

PLEASE NOTE

The Old Post Office is on the road to Ironbridge. With the bus stop right outside please expect some traffic noise. There are five steep steps up from the pavement to the house. Please consider this if you have impaired mobility.

About Heather Berwick

Our obsession with this area started five years ago when we visited for the first time.

The industrial heritage is stamped on Coalbrookdale and the surrounding areas in a charming and fascinating way. The history is all around in the landscape and the architecture.

Heather Berwick purchased this house in 2014

Why Heather Berwick chose Shropshire

This house had enough space for us to stay in and was right next to the Museum of Iron and the site of the world's first blast furnace which is the centre of our interest.

The Old Post Office was also itself a piece of the area's history. On the floorboards in the front room we could see the marks made by a hundred years of heeled shoes as people waited at the counter. We have yet to uncover a picture of the post office in use but we have discovered it was originally owned in 1905 by Mr. John Dorsett. His son, John P Dorsett, was the butcher in the shop next door.

The house needed a lot of work but Phase 1 is now complete. There is a new kitchen and bathroom and a full redecoration. We will be continuing to improve it and restore it in the future.

A lovely house,

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely weeks holiday, visited many interesting places and local Museums (which were open!) some already closed also on Mondays.

The house was very nice, cosy & clean only negative point being the early morning start of the Aga /Rayburn Factory opposite - very noisy until it closed mid afternoons.(Heard that it is about to close down)

Had problems with closed roads on the Monday and on Tuesday the diversions signs had not been removed which both TomTom & Google Maps GPS could not even cope with ; took us almost 50mins to travel from Wellington Rd to Blists Hill and the same time for our friends who were staying in Ladywood; When we left on the Friday the signs still had not been removed! A problem with the Council.

Comfort in Coalbrookdale

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Old Post Office in September. It is a wonderful accommodation for a family or a couple. The second bedroom has bunk beds that are very comfortable. The property was clean and well appointed with a modern kitchen. The bathroom has been updated and has a huge tub and shower with wonderful blue patterned tiles! Parking is on the street in front of the house but it is always available. I would highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to visit this area of the UK.

Comfort in Coalbrookdale

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place to stay - well equipped for a couple or a family. While the building is historic, the amenities have been updated. The kitchen is modern with a good sized refrigerator/freezer, oven and cooktop, as well as a washer/dryer combo. The bathroom has a huge new bathtub/shower. We would highly recommend this accommodation.

Comfortable cottage in great location

  • 5 of 5

Very clean and comfortable, big double bedroom and nice room for kids with bunk beds . Nice lounge with two settees .Location is wonderful, the museum of iron is only 100 yards away and an easy ten minute walk to the gorge and iron bridge . Kitchen appliances good maybe could do with a few bowls and containers. Big bathroom and bath but we could not manage to get a strong flow from the shower.

Perfect place to stay for a total Coalbrookdale/ Ironbridge experience

  • 4 of 5

The Old Post Office is comfortable and well equipped throughout. We didn't have any youngsters with us but were impressed with all the toys, books and DVD available for children.

We were ideally placed for a short walk to The Museum of Iron, Enginuity and the Darby Houses and there is a bus stop outside the front door to take you towards all the other superb local attractions. We also visited Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock during out holiday, each with many attractions, including two National Trust Properties, and took an enjoyable downstream raft ride from Ironbridge's main car park.

Heather was very supportive during the booking stage, promptly answering my queries, and I have no hesitation in recommending The Old Post Office.

Fantastic location and lovely home.

  • 5 of 5

This really was a great find. One of the best I have ever stayed in. Everything you need is in the house. It is quiet and comfortable, decorated in beautiful colours. The bed was really comfortable. We loved the area and the Sabbath walks and it is the place to stay if you like industrial history.
