The Old Post Office. In the heart of the World Heritage Site

Overview

Property

Updated: 14-Nov-2016

The Old Post Office is a Grade II listed building just across the road from the Coalbrookdale museums and just up the road from Ironbridge. It is right in the heart of the World Heritage Site and makes a perfect base from which to explore the seat of the Industrial Revolution and the Ironbridge Gorge.

*****If you would like to stay for 5 or 6 nights, please contact me for a price*****

The area is popular with walkers and cyclists and there are a number of great walks on the doorstep. There is a secure cycle shed at the back of the house.

If you don't fancy driving (or walking) there is a bus stop right outside where you can catch a bus to Ironbridge or go into Telford to do some shopping or visit the large town park.

We have recently refurbished the house with comfort as our main priority. There are two large sofas to relax on and the beds all have memory foam toppers & linen is provided. There is free Wi-Fi and a selection of DVDs, games and books for all ages.

On the ground floor there is a sitting room with a log burner. This originally had the post office counter and retains the large shop-style window. There is also a dining room and a modern fitted kitchen on the ground floor with a fridge freezer and washer/dryer.

Upstairs there is a large double bedroom with a kingsize bed, a second bedroom with 3ft bunk beds and a modern bathroom with electric shower other the bath. There is on-street parking immediately outside. The house has no garden but there is a small terrace area outside the kitchen with a small table and two chairs for a glass of something in the sunshine or a cup of coffee (or a cigarette).

NEARBY.....

3 minute walk to the museum café & gift shop (open 10 - 5pm every day ,we recommend the breakfast baguettes).

3 minute walk to The Museum of Iron.

3 minute walk to Enginuity (interactive museum for children).

2 minute walk to nearest pub.

5 minute walk to children's play park.

15 minute walk into Ironbridge, the museum of the Gorge & nearest shop (Co-op with car parking, and pay a visit to the antique centre behind it)

5 miles to Telford -the nearest large town- which has many shopping opportunities and a large town park.

16 miles to Shrewsbury, one of England's finest medieval market towns and home to the fictional Brother Cadfael.

The Museums use a passport ticket system, which on their website says....

''The Annual Passport Ticket represents fantastic value. It allows unlimited daytime admission to all 10 Ironbridge Gorge Museums, during normal opening hours, so you can return as often as you like for one year. If after 12 months you have still not visited particular sites, you can return at any time in the future to make one free visit to the sites that you've missed''

PLEASE NOTE

The Old Post Office is on the road to Ironbridge. With the bus stop right outside please expect some traffic noise. There are five steep steps up from the pavement to the house. Please consider this if you have impaired mobility.

About the Owner

Our obsession with this area started five years ago when we visited for the first time.

The industrial heritage is stamped on Coalbrookdale and the surrounding areas in a charming and fascinating way. The history is all around in the landscape and the architecture.

A lovely house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at The Old Post Office. The house has been very nicely renovated. It is very comfortable and well-equipped, and clear instructions made checking in and finding our way around the house very easy. Good internet was important to us, and the wifi was extremely fast. We would definitely stay here again.

Centrally located cottage in a fascinating area!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage ticked significant boxes for us, very clean, extremely comfortable beds (the double bed being a decent width) and finally fast internet access. The cottage is well placed for the Coalbrookdale museums and within walking distance of Ironbridge. The house is also centrally located in the Telford area where there is masses to see and do. It is located on a busy road, opposite the Aga factory, which is well screened by trees but these factors did not affect us in anyway. In conclusion the house was good value for money and a great base for exploring the area.

Spacious, charming cottage with all the comforts of home, in a beautiful setting.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in The Old Post Office for 4 days in April. The cottage is spacious and has all the comforts of home but retaining the charm of a period property.

The beds are really comfortable. There is a large, deep double ended bath, perfect for a relaxing soak with a glass of wine. If you prefer a shower there is a rainforest shower over the bath. The lounge has two large sofas, satellite TV, a cast iron wood burner and a good selection of DVD, books and games for all the family. There are a few steps up from the street to the property and the stairs are fairly steep so not ideal for people with mobility problems. There is lots of on street parking and a bus stop just outside the property. Coalbrookdale is a beautiful place, with lots of charming properties and individual shops and hills for lovely walks. The Ironbridge gorge world heritage site is on the doorstep, with most of the museums in walking distance or a short car journey. Well worth buying the passport tickets so you can visit as many times as you like within a year. Blists Hill Victorian town is amazing. You can walk along the streets and inside the shops and pub to see what life was like in Victorian times. You can buy things from the shops. The foundry does casting on a Wednesday. The fish and chips are amazing and cooked in beef dripping. Everything from the bakery was delicious, especially the fruit loaves. There is a shop in coalbrookdale that sells award winning pork pies which are delicious. The Shakespeare Inn serves excellent food with very generous portions, this is located near the China museum. We would thoroughly recommend you visit Coalbrookdale and stay at The Old Post Office. It really is home from home and such a charming cottage with lots of space and character. The owners have made sure there is everything you need and even Street map, take away menus and leaflets on places to visit. Excellent stay and will definitely return again.

Great place to stay for Ironbridge attractions

  • 4 of 5

The Old Post Office in Coalbrookdale was just perfect for our visit to the Ironbridge attractions. Cosy and comfortable, clean, quiet and quirky - and warm as toast during a cold week in April. Parking right outside, great walks starting from the house, museums across the road and just down the hill - it was an excellent location. Easy to make full use of our multi-museum discount passes.

The local Coop was really convenient and great for everyday groceries and some good microwave meals too.

A perfect place for couples (like us) but with that extra room with bunk beds it would suit families too. It feels big too with separate lounge, dining room and large fully equipped kitchen and a huge bathroom.

We hope to return one day and are already encouraging our families to stay here and visit the Ironside area with their families.

The Old Post Office, Coalbrookdale

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house with a super-comfy king sized bed. The property is handily located and we experienced no problems during our stay. We hope to return in the not too distant future.

Charming property, full of character, lovely stay.

  • 5 of 5

The Old Post Office has all the charm you would expect from a house of it's time. Though the kitchen and bathroom are modern and obviously fairly new - making our stay all the more comfortable - the choices the owners have made in their decor meant the character of the cottage has not been lost.

Everything was clean and tidy and there was plenty of information on hand for eating out and places of interest to visit. There were also games, books and DVD's aplenty for the evenings.

The location of the Old Post Office was perfect for our stay, as we wanted to visit all the museums around-about, so we were never far from any of them.

I would not hesitate in recommending The Old Post Office as a comfortable and pleasing place to stay and also the friendly, helpful owners who gave us many tips and information that were very useful.

Location

From the Owner

This house had enough space for us to stay in and was right next to the Museum of Iron and the site of the world's first blast furnace which is the centre of our interest. The Old Post Office was also itself a piece of the area's history. On the floorboards in the front room we could see the marks made by a hundred years of heeled shoes as people waited at the counter. We have yet to uncover a picture of the post office in use but we have discovered it was originally owned in 1905 by Mr. John Dorsett. His son, John P Dorsett, was the butcher in the shop next door. The house needed a lot of work but Phase 1 is now complete. There is a new kitchen and bathroom and a full redecoration. We will be continuing to improve it and restore it in the future.
