Picture-postcard cottage in dream setting of orchards, own grounds, ample parking

Updated: 28-Jul-2016
3 bedrooms(sleeps 5),2bathrooms,valley views & short drive to beautiful beaches

Nuckwell Cottage, owned by Stephen and Sheila Sharley, enjoys a peaceful and secluded setting bordered by fields and cider orchards where sheep and cattle graze. The days are often heralded by songbirds;and sightings of foxes, badgers, and rabbits are not uncommon.

The cottage has been refurbished retaining many of the original features(natural slate floors/old beams) coupled with the benefits of a logburner and oil-fired central heating.

Approach from a large private parking area enter via the fitted kitchen/diner with granite worktops, fridgefreezer, electric cooker, dishwasher, and microwave.

This leads into a cosy lounge with logburner,TV and DVDplayer.

An oak door leads onto the front lawn-an ideal barbecue area with lots of stone walls to sit on plus wooden garden furniture.

Off the lounge is a small lobby with a washing machine and separate tumbledryer.

This leads to the downstairs bathroom with bath, WC and basin.

At the top of the wooden staircase are 3 bedrooms;1 double, 1 single, and 1 twin-

bedded room with french windows leading to a stone paved patio with table and chairs (ideal for leisurely breakfasts on sunny mornings!)

Also upstairs is a centrally located shower room with basin and WC .

We provide non-allergy duvets and pillows with pretty bedlinen.

A cot with mattress, highchair and babybath are available if needed.

All electricity, heating and logs(if needed)are included in the prices but you will need to bring your own bath and beach towels and cot linen.

The cottage has a large child friendly garden with charcoal(not supplied)barbecue, ropeswing and swingball with no passing traffic.

Nuckwell Cottage is exclusively for non smokers and we regret that we cannot accommodate any pets.

The cottage is only half a mile from the main road and the rural village of Chuchstow where local facilities include a Post Office village store, a church and a popular 13th century Inn that boasts a delicious carvery.

Beautiful setting. Peaceful and quiet. A perfect hideaway.

A gem of a cottage surrouded by fruit trees and fields with grazing sheep and cattle. The cottage is reached via a long narrow lane, about a mile or so from the main road. A nearby public footpath leads to the top of the fields with long-reaching views.

The cottage is well equipped. The kitchen has crockery in a floor-level cupboard. I would make a plea for a big shelf or a wall mounted cupboard for mugs and plates. Also more pegs for hanging anoraks and bags etc..

There is a large carport with tabletennis and swingball. Also several compfy sunloungers. Perfect for that afternoon snooze. And last but not least - a sturdy rope hooked over a big oak branch making a wonderful swing.

Bantham beach is within a 15 min drive. Good for surfing. Thurlestone has a sandy beach and plenty of rockpools when the tide is out.

A great place for a relaxing holiday. Spotlessly clean with helpful and welcoming hosts.

A picturesque rural retreat providing a wonderful base for our family to explore the southern coast of Devon. The cottage was beautifully clean and well-equipped, and the owners were very welcoming. The location meant that our 3 young boys could enjoy the freedom and space of the cottage, and we lost them to the orchards, swing rope and games barn. Kingsbridge was very close with all the necessary local amenities, and with such stunning weather, we spent some lovely days at nearby Thurlestone beach and Salcombe. Would love to go back!

Idyllic picture- postcard country cottage in beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

We would certainly recommend this cottage to any family with young children. The garden location offers a safe area with plenty of room for play for the children and a great space for summer dining/BBQ's. The additional facilities in the extended garage space with table tennis facilities and swing ball were great for evenings.

Lots of good car parking space for easy loading and unloading. The cottage was very clean and well equipped to make our stay comfortable, especially appreciated on the odd rainy day.

The location of the cottage is also ideal for travel to many local beaches and Kingsbridge is a few minutes away for the local Tesco and Morrison's. We certainly recommend Kingsbridge quay-side for some crabbing with little ones and the local fish & chip shop has excellent fresh fish.

The owners, Steve & Shirley , were welcoming and live in the nearby property - they were available if needed but also gave us our own space and privacy.

A fantastic week in a fantastic cottage.

The cottage provided the ultimate chill out rest for all of our party of five, ages ranging from 12-82.

Everything has been thought of in this cottage including the lovely welcome given by Sheila & Steve.

Super summer holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

Nuckwell Cottage is gorgeous. I fell in love with it off the pictures on the Internet, and in real life the place more than lives up to expectations. All three teenage children were gobsmacked when they saw it - which tells you how nice this place is. The location is "away from it all", which was just what we needed as a family - time to play cards, enjoy food, and recharge batteries. If the weather is on your side, then you could stay all week in the garden - there are nooks and crannies all around the property for people to find space to relax - I would find one daughter curled up in her bedroom window watching the world outside while testing the wifi to its limits. The cottage was larger than I expected, with certainly enough space for all our family - two daughters loved that their bedroom had doors leading out on to a large patio, and another hiding place. Everything was spotlessly clean, and we were welcomed by Steve and Sheila, and given a guided tour of the place. Although they live near, they don't intrude at all, we knew they were there if we needed them which was perfect.

We loved exploring the area: Kingsbridge only a few miles away has two large supermarkets and oodles of charm, while Salcombe a few more miles away is just beautiful. There is everything here for water lovers, and whilst busy, we found completely secluded coves nearby for swimming and playing in, with lovely views everywhere from amazing cliff walks. Inland there are forest trails, while for city lovers, Plymouth and Exeter (both very nice indeed) are a relatively short drive away. The beauty of this place, is that you can do what you fancy during the day - with a really lovely cottage to come back to later. Our only word of caution is for the driver who has to negotiate the narrow lanes with high hedges everywhere once you leave the main roads.

Christmas getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful, relaxing stay over the Christmas period. A warm welcome received from Sheila and Steve into their beautiful premises. Warm, clean and so pretty. Quiet and peaceful stay. Can not wait to return in warmer weather and see the trees and flowers in bloom, which will be an added bonus. Bedrooms clean and comfortable, Fully equipped kitchen. Good parking space...steep access! Recommended.

From the Owner

We have apples, plums, pears and medlars which you are welcome to pick for your own use when they are in season. There are numerous varieties of cider and desert apples which occasionally we turn into cider using an ancient cider press that you can view by request. Or you can just sit outside and watch the sun come up and the sun go down!
