Stunning 19th Century Manor House in the Village of Upwey

Overview

Property

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Country House, 8 Bedrooms, 16-20 People

Luxury house for rent in Dorset

A stunning 19th century manor house with over 6,000 square feet of luxury accommodation awaits you in the village of Upwey, just a few miles from the sea on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

Celebrate or relax in style

Perched on top of a hill and sitting within 25 acres of beautiful gardens and grounds, looking south to Portland and the sailing mecca of Weymouth, Upwey House offers self-catered accommodation for house parties, family gatherings, celebrations or simply a relaxing break with friends. It also lends itself well to corporate meetings.

Recently refurbished throughout to a high standard, the house retains all of the original features one would expect of a Grade II Listed country home, but with the comfort and style of modern living. Particular care has been taken to ensure the house and grounds are well suited to young families.

There are wonderful walks within the grounds of the house itself, encompassing a shallow stretch of the River Wey at its source as well as fields, forests and beautiful gardens. The secluded house and its grounds are a haven of exploration and wonder for children and adults alike.

Whether taking in the views from the terrace with a chilled drink, hosting a decadent dinner in the dining room, snuggling up under a throw in front of a crackling fire, taking on your fellow guests on the football pitch or playing a more docile game of cricket or croquet on the terrace lawn, Upwey House truly has something for everyone.

The market town of Dorchester and the seaside town of Weymouth are both a short drive away, as are a wealth of fine beaches, restaurants and activities including cycling, horse-riding and golf.

Accommodation

The house was originally built for entertaining in the grand Victorian style, and it has been renovated extensively in a way that retains the grandeur and character of that time but with the style and comfort we expect in modern living.

Ground Floor

The “newer” South wing of the house comprises a lobby and grand entrance hall leading into an open-plan kitchen with breakfast bar and an impressive dining room which seats 16 around an antique mahogany table. Beyond the dining room lies the beautiful, bright and airy drawing room with its open log fire and views across the terrace and beyond.

A corridor leads off towards the North wing, passing by a cosy snug/library with TV/DVD and a sunny, well-equipped playroom (with sofa bed) finally winding around to the oldest part of the house which houses a secretive back staircase, laundry rooms and decadent full-sized snooker room at the far end.

First Floor

All of the eight bedrooms are situated on the first floor of the house and each one has it’s own character and charm. The master suite (Lulworth) is a bright, sun-filled room with a king-sized bed and beautiful views to the West towards the meadow and South towards the sea. The room benefits from its own dressing room (which can be used for a sleeping baby) and a large ensuite bath/shower room.

There is another king-sized room (Richmond) with a luxurious bath/shower room next door at the blissfully quiet North end of the house. Two other double rooms (Montague and Haverstock) share a bathroom (lockable from the inside) and are beautifully decorated and luxuriously finished.

There is a pretty twin-bedded room (Pinchbeck) and single room (Lucerne) with truckle bed below to make the room a twin or a double if required. Both rooms have traditional sink stands.

A further bathroom with WC, shower and bath is located opposite Haverstock.

There are two further very spacious and bright twin-bedded rooms overlooking the gardens and views to the South – Amandolier and Ringstead.

These rooms lend themselves particularly well to groups of children who want to make dens and enjoy midnight feasts. Ringstead incorporates a sofa bed. Equally both rooms can be used as large twin rooms for adults and beds can be pushed together to make doubles. Both rooms incorporate traditional sink stands.

All of the bedrooms at Upwey House have traditional shutters at the windows ensuring well-deserved lie-ins.

Upwey House history

Upwey House is an integral part of the village of Upwey. It is a classic country manor house, which has become a part of the fabric of the area. For example, the village fair, an impressible large event that takes place once every two years, is traditionally held in the paddocks and fields of Upwey House.

The house itself, comprising 6,000 square feet over two stories, was built in two stages, the older part to the north side of the central courtyard dating back to the 1830s, whilst a later section was added to the south in the 1880s.

However records dating back far earlier to the 17th Century suggest that the house was originally sited around 100 yards away at the bottom of the hill adjacent to the River Wey, and was later moved brick by brick to its current site when its owners felt it would benefit from the superior views towards the sea. This lithograph dated 1793 shows the house in its original location.

The house belonged for most of its life to the Gould family, wealthy merchants and landowners who owned much of the land in and around Upwey and Dorchester. The road rising above Upwey towards Dorchester still bears their name (“Gould’s Hill”), as does the department store in the town centre. Records suggest that the Goulds built Upwey House as their country retreat, despite the fact that their main home was Upwey Manor sitting a few hundred yards away at the other end of the village.

The village of Upwey is very old: the St Laurence Church within walking distance of Upwey House dates back to the 13th Century.

But it’s clear that the village of Upwey had become a very desirable place to live by early Victorian times, located as it was at the very source of the River Wey (hence the name “Upwey”, where the Wey first springs up). The well that was built at its source was thought to bring health-restorative powers, and the Wishing Well in Upwey remains to this day a popular attraction. The large number of imposing houses that line either side of Church Street (which you will be able to see if you turn right out of the gates and continue for half a mile) are testament to the wealth that the village must have enjoyed partly as a result of this spa.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“What an amazing stay at Upwey House. We came as a family of four generations to celebrate my Dad’s 80th birthday. There is a warm and welcoming feel to the house with more than enough room for the grandchildren to get “lost” and build “dens” everywhere. The grounds are beautiful and a walk to the wishing well and making wishes gave a magical feeling to the weekend. Thank you - a wonderful home”

Upwey House - Elegance and Tranquility Personified

  • 5 of 5

Upwey House is truly a gem and sparkles in so many ways.

Our stay there was a three generation family get-together with participants ranging from a two year old to the near eighties.

The house and grounds have so much to offer to all ages that there was never a dull moment. As an added bonus, there were sparrowhawks nesting just tens of metres in front of the house!

The children thought they were in Wonderland both inside the house and in the grounds (the forest, the stream, the fields, plus the football pitch). When the sheep arrived, it was even better but they never managed to teach them English!

The parents also thought they were in Wonderland in the kitchen which offers everything the budding chef could hope for!

All the rooms are consistent with "tasteful charm", giving a tangible feeling of tranquillity and calm.

Everything is to a high quality throughout.

Its elevated location provides extensive views over the nearby countryside, virtually to the sea. It also enjoys a very private position, adding to its peacefulness.

If our experience is anything to go by, the owners pay especial attention to each of their guests to ensure that their stay is both comfortable and memorable. We very much appreciated what they did for us. The children were also well provided for with several new toys and games. (The playroom is anyway very well equipped and the various things we had brought with us for "rainy days" were totally redundant).

Consistent with this, the owners are exceptionally responsive, we usually heard back from them within a few hours at most. Likewise, the housekeeper was similarly attentive and did everything to put us at our ease on arrival and through our stay. We were also grateful to her six year old daughter, Nancy, for ensuring that everything in the playroom was in good order for us.

Whilst our visit was as a family holiday, the venue offers the perfect spot, elegance and facilities for any special event or anniversary.

Beautiful imposing Manor House with amazing views.

  • 5 of 5

Upwey is a breathtaking Manor House set in beautiful countryside with amazing views and lovely walks all around. The house itself is perfectly laid out with large spacious rooms perfect for entertaining. We stayed in the Summer with two other couples and had a total of eight children all who had the best time exploring the house. There is a gorgeous snug and playroom so the children were able to have their own space and run around the woods nearby. After dinner we loved going down to the snooker room which again along with the rest of the house is beautifully decorated rather like a gentlemens club !. I can highly recommend Upwey for a great family holiday or for large group booking. There us certainly loads of space and places to explore in the surrounding area.

Upwey

Upwey is three miles from Dorchester to the North and Weymouth to the South. They are larger market towns each with their own distinct character. Dorchester is a more genteel market county town, steeped in history and packed fill of impressive historical buildings. Weymouth is an archetypal British seaside town, boasting a bustling, working fishing port, a naval base, and expansive sandy beaches with all the accompanying fish and chip shops, guest houses and lively nightlife one would expect. It is also something of a mecca to the sailing community, evidenced by the fact it played host for all the sailing events at the London Olympics in 2012.
