Fantastic barn conversion, warm, comfortable and extremely well located for the Eden Valley .

  • 5 of 5

The Fold is a brilliant barn conversion with full central heating and an extremely effective wood burning stove. It is clean, well equipped and comfortable with a spacious bathroom and large shower room. Everything you need is here. The special feature is the garden room which commands extensive views across the Eden Valley to the distant Pennines. One can linger here interminably and just savour the vista. The Fold is easily accessed with car parking adjacent and is extremely well located for Kirkby Stephen and Appleby. Swaledale can be reached in just over half an hour and Hawes in Wensleydale is not a lot longer. One can also travel on the now famous Settle to Carlisle railway allowing numerous walking options from one station to another. We were delighted to see red squirrels on three occasions in the area as well as black and red grouse on the nearby Asby Scar. This is a walkers and naturalists paradise. There are several good pubs and other eating places around. We would commend the Nateby Inn at Nateby near Kirkby Stephen and the Brief Encounter Cafe and Tea Room at Langwathby Station. Both are dog friendly as are most such places in the area which gives the area an additional welcoming feel. Beware the so called cafe at Little Salkeld Mill which is outrageously expensive and, unlike most other places in this delightful area, rather unwelcoming

Booking was easy and all the information we needed was supplied in good time and it is dog friendly of course. . We will most certainly return as soon as possible.

It is not often that we have booked accommodation and the property far exceeds the pictures but this is definitely true of The Fold. We found it to be much bigger than we anticipated, very homely, very tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and the views from the sun room and garden are amazing. It felt more like we were staying at a friends house than a rental property. It is definitely a bit off the beaten track but you would not get the views and tranquillity if it were not. A car is a must.

Would definitely recommend.

A Wonderful Relaxing Week in beautiful countryside

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time time on holiday in this area. The accommodation was far better than we had expected. The views from the house were stunning and our dog really enjoyed the freedom of the countryside. The only disturbance in the mornings were sheep bleating in the adjacent field! There is plenty to see from Roman Forts, Steam Railways, Castles, mills and a lead mine. The local food was excellent and the welcome second to none. We were lucky - it did not rain once.

From the Owner

The Fold offers peace and quiet to relax and unwind. The view across to the Pennines is spectacular, with ever-changing displays of colour ad light. The night skies are also a delight - with the nightly hooting of a local owl. I can't promise you'll see red squirrels, but they are about. The interior is light and spacious, with plenty of room for lazing around, and a good collection of books for browsing. The newly added conservatory, or sun-porch is great for doing nothing very much, or for planning next day's activities. The garden is still in its infancy, so please forgive any weeds that may appear.

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

The market towns of Appleby and Kirkby Stephen provide all facilities. Good walks from the door, including the famed nature reserve of Smardale Gill and viaduct. Wild Boar Fell and the high moorland around all have open access and the coast-to-coast footpath crosses the fell above Crosby Garrett. At the top of the village the Settle/Carlisle railway crosses on an impressive viaduct, with a station at Kirkby Stephen. The main A 66 crosses the Penines to give fast access to Teesdale, Co. Durham and North Yorkshire - and Scotland is just up the M.6. Or you could just sit in the garden and watch the clouds floating over the Penines!
