Ketel Tail - Cosy Contemporary Accommodation For Two near Windermere

Overview

Property

Updated: 16-Oct-2016
Apartment for 2 in self contained wing of a traditional Lake District farmhouse

Ketel Tail is a private apartment with its own separate entrance, sitting out areas and half an acre of wild gardens for the exclusive use of guests.

Walk to the pub or further afield through the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Located in the peaceful village of Crook between Windermere, in the heart of the Lake District, and the pretty market town of Kendal, Ketel Tail has the best of both worlds - easy to get to yet with the lakes and fells on your doorstep.

Ketel Tail is the historic name for the parcel of land on which the new house wing was built in 2013. Constructed to the highest standards, its contemporary interior has a country twist and is warm and cosy. The owners live next door but fully understand that your privacy is important and will not disturb you, although they are on hand if you need anything.

Ketel Tail is in the village of Crook in the Lake District National Park, between Windermere and the pretty market town of Kendal.

Convenient and easy to reach:

The Lakes - Windermere 10 minutes

Kendal - 10 minutes

Yorkshire Dales - Sedbergh 25 minutes

M6 motorway - 15 minutes

Oxenholme mainline railway station - 15 minutes

The Sun Inn is within easy walking distance. An hour's walk from Ketel Tail, along the Dales Way path (or 10 minutes drive) takes you to the Watermill at Ings or Staveley's Eagle and Child or Hawkshead Beer Hall. They all do food. Alternatively why not try fine dining at the Gilpin, 2.5 miles away?

For walkers we are just off the Dales Way long distance footpath. For the less energetic there are plenty of shorter walks from the doorstep.

We are 2 miles away from the "UK's largest cycle shop" at Staveley. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of cycling trails and events throughout the year.

The centre of the Lake District with its climbing, fell walking, watersports and shopping is only a short drive away.

Stately homes, topiary gardens, wild animal parks and steam trains means there's no time to be bored.

Or just relax at Ketel Tail with a good book or with some wildlife spotting. You are likely to see deer, foxes, buzzards and the sparrowhawk that lives nearby. There are hens, a cockerel, pigs, cows and a hive of bees in the surrounding fields.

Tourist information, guidebooks and maps are provided in the house. If you would like any specific recommendations of things to do or places to go, we are happy to help.

A door from the garden leads into the newly fitted kitchen. It's equipped with oven, hob, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment and dishwasher. There is a kettle, toaster, good pans and sharp knives.

There is plenty of room to eat at the kitchen table which has views over the fields. Or eat outside when the weather is good!

Step down through the doorway from the kitchen into the comfortable sitting room. There is an LED TV with freeview, DVD player and mini hifi with usb connectivity. Wifi is provided but, like many aspects of life in Crook, is slow and not suitable for streaming. Books, DVDs, maps and games are provided just in case it rains. Built in wardrobe with drawers and hanging space. Views over farmland without a house in sight.

Clamber into bed in the cosy bed box with its romantic fairy lights and its own TV. A snug fully enclosed sleeping chamber with two entrances up steps, one of which is a bit of a squeeze! There are hanging pegs and a big shelf at the head of the bed with bedside lights and plenty of space for books and drinks.

The bathroom has an extra long bath with a good thermostatic shower over. There is a large mirror and towel radiator with soft towels provided.

Outside the kitchen door is a sitting out area with table and chairs. A gravel path leads up to a wooden gate and your half acre orchard garden. It is completely private and has far reaching views to Scout Scar and over the Lyth Valley to Morecambe Bay. Guests have exclusive use of this garden with its wild flowers, fruit trees, gorse and large rocky outcrops (with unfenced drops). Sit out at the picnic table and enjoy a barbecue next to the fire pit (with wood available). For special occasions, summer picnics or lantern-lit meals can be provided. Please ask us for more information.

Off-road parking for two cars. Ketel Tail is 25m from the car park up quite a steep gravel path. Assistance with luggage is available!

Absolutely lovely stay and hosts. The place and the flat is far better than the pictures. Flat decorated with a great taste and attention to details. Very comfortable highly recommended.

Fantastic property in an Idyllic location!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in a fantastic part of the Lake District in a superb property that was perfectly laid out and maintained to an exceptional standard! The owners Joanna and Steve couldn't have done more for us and were brilliant hosts - a big thank you once again to them! We will definitely return and would highly recommend to anyone. First class in every aspect.

Just what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

Me and my partner have just returned from a 3 night break at Ketal Tail. We were walking Scafell Pike as a little challenge and wanted more space than a hotel or b&b room. This little cottage was perfect and just what we needed.

It is compact with everything you need for a small break. We even has access to the field next to the cottage which was great for evening drinks.

Johanna was brilliant from the moment I enquired right through to returning the keys on the morning we left.

We also took a recommendation of heading to the Smokehouse Grill for food one night which was lovely.

Will defiantly look at returning for breaks in the future to tick off more Wainwright Walks!!

We stayed two nights at Level Tail.

Everything you need is provided, it's lovely and clean and with it being pet friendly we couldn't of asked for more.

We will definitely go again.

A perfect peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

This accommodation is both cosy and spacious and in a beautiful location that's peaceful yet near to all the amenities and attractions around Bowness, Windermere and Kendal. I received a warm welcome by Joanna and her dogs, cat and chickens and the directions given to find the property were clear and easy to follow so I arrived with no unnecessary detours!

Every part of the accommodation has been so well thought through with all possible needs catered for from fresh flowers from the owner's garden, an extra long bath with powerful shower over, a very comfortable bed, lots of ambient lighting plus should the weather not be clement or if a lazy day is wanted - a huge tv, dvds, music centre, books and board games are all provided. I thought the kitchen was also very well equipped and everywhere was spotlessly clean.

I had a thoroughly lovely stay here and would recommend it as a good base from which to enjoy all of the Lake District. Having never been up to this part of the UK before I was very much looking forward to seeing the scenery for myself and it certainly did not disappoint. I enjoyed particularly going to Beatrix Potter's house at Hill Top Farm and learning about Donald & Malcolm Campbell's world record setting exploits and challenges in the Lakeland Motor Museum. Grasmere is very pretty and don't miss the famous gingerbread, it is worth queuing for!

I had great fun driving the passes through forests, up hill and down dale and seeing most of the Lakes themselves and the region. Ambleside seemed to be struggling with its traffic management during my few days and was always very slow to circumnavigate/get through. I don't know if I was unlucky or this is a general thing but I preferred to avoid the roads here and find other ways to get where I wanted to go and see.

I definitely hope to return to the Lakes and Ketel Tail and if you haven't been, do so and be confident you will definitely enjoy both!

Lovely, perfectly equipped apartment in beautiful surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

I enjoyed a Bank Holiday weekend at Ketel Tail. The apartment is spotlessly clean, well-equipped and excellently designed for its cosy size. The owners are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The area is perfect if you are looking for a rural, quiet spot slightly away from the main tourist hub of the Lakes (though within easy driving distance of both Bowness and Ambleside). The apartment made for a wonderfully relaxing weekend away and I would highly recommend it to others!
