3 bed house, tucked away down a private lane surrounded by peace and tranquility

Updated: 04-Oct-2016
3 bedrooms, bathroom & shower room, living & dining room, well appointed kitchen

Timbers is tucked away down a private lane surrounded by peace and tranquility. This attractive house was built in 1907, and still retains a colonial beauty.  Builders from Mayfair sailed down the Thames, around the coast, and up the river Blackwater to discover this far-away spot.  Still with its ‘far-away’ feel, but less than an hour from the M25, visitors no longer need to get a pony and trap from Southminster train station or sail around the coast to reach ‘Scarletts’ estate, although this would be possible for the intrepid traveller!  For the keen sailors and water sports enthusiasts, Timbers is located within short easy walking distance of Stone and Marconi Sailing clubs and has access to a private slipway onto the foreshore.

Timbers, offering comfortable, 3 bedroom, 4 star accommodation, with all mod-cons. There is a well-equipped kitchen area with a large electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, a washing machine, and a large fridge and freezer. With a separate dining and sitting room along with a sun-room and downstairs shower room, Timbers has a spacious feel.

Upstairs all 3 bedrooms are double sized rooms, two are set up with twin beds, one with a double.  There is space in any room for an extra cot if needed. Their is a separate bathroom upstairs with comfortable corner bath. Other facilities include a drying room and outside storage for bikes and/or sailing equipment, not to mention those wet muddy clothes & towels; the result of a good day on the beach!

Timbers also has a secluded garden, which the guests have sole use of. There is plenty of space for all the family, from the quiet sunny corner to curl up with a good holiday book, to the large lawn for more energetic games.

For those of you who have not visited the Blackwater River, the largest of the Essex estuary rivers, it is a must. Beautiful sunsets across the bay could inspire the artist in us all, and the visiting bird life include nesting Aversets and Heron.

About the Owner

I'm Lois. I have lived in St Lawrence Bay for many years and had been visiting it for many years before. I'm not quite sure who I fell in love with first - my husband or St Lawrence Bay?! When I left my job in 2010 it seemed like the ideal time to follow a life long dream and set up a holiday cottage. It took some time to find what I was looking for: somewhere peaceful, secluded, comfortable, somewhere that lowers the blood pressure and replaces the stresses of life with sense of well-being and tranquility. I found it! at Timbers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My partner and I have stayed at Timbers both in the summer and the autumn. In both seasons it was a wonderful experience where we immediately felt relaxed and at home. The Scarlett's Estate gives one a sense of exclusivity and of entering another world and time, so different is it to anything we have encountered before.

The wooden house provides a warmth, peace and stillness and the garden is spacious and not overlooked. We like too the abundant space for off-road parking and the fact we could shut out the world, albeit a quiet one, with fenced gates.

The River Blackwater is just a short walk away and it was a delight to see the river traffic, which included Thames barges.

All-in-all Timbers for us is like an old and dear friend that we want to return to again and again.

Wonderful home, wonderful owner

Myself and five friends stayed one night, but soon after arriving we wished we were staying longer. Timbers is a lovely tranquil home, completely enclosed, perfect for a getaway. Lois, the owner, was very hospitable, helpful and generous. This place is highly recommended!

Timbers a true delight.

  • 5 of 5

Only had time to stay for three nights and wished it could have been longer. A truly get away from it all location. The house and gardens are wonderful and the hostess provides some lovely home made extras which are very welcome. It is a stones throw from the beach to while away time watching the boats and other sea activities and I so wished I had taken my swimming costume. A beautiful restful place which is hard to find these days.

Loved Timbers.

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful week at Timbers (July 18-25). We arrived after a 37 hour flight from Adelaide Australia to be greeted by the lovely Lois bearing goodies. Fresh bread and marmalade and a homemade cake. A lovely welcome to a lovely home and neighbourhood. Peaceful and relaxing. Beds very comfy. We had breakfast in the garden with birdsong. Refreshing walks along the Seawall, as well as exploring Maldon. Totally recommend Timbers.

Kind Regards and Many Thanks from Jan and Chris Barron.

Fab house, lovely garden, close to river perfect for us.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed (5 friends meeting for a reunion) 1st weekend July, the house is immaculately clean, very quiet and peaceful. There are lots of different areas to sit in the house and the garden so you can always be in the sun or the shade. It's a few minutes to the river which is a lovely walk, especially for a drink at sundown. Lois provided us with fresh bread, jam and cake when we arrived it was perfect.

We will definitely stay again.

A House to dream in,

  • 5 of 5

A weekend with family, and ( a day on a Thames Barge, my daughter bought for her fathers birthday gift) The house was the perfect location taking me back in time, with the character and feel of the place. Space inside and out we all loved it. The generosity of the owner and her pleasant manner left us happy to be there. Thank you Lois xxxxxx

The perfect property for our family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay in this very comfortable and clean house, the bedrooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable even for the XL Americans we had in tow! I often get backache when not in my own bed but had no problem here. The house was tastefully decorated with all the conveniances that make a holiday easy... dishwasher, clothes washing and drying facilities, ironing (though thats never on my holiday plan) A lovely big kitchen with huge fridge and seperate freezer. Cooking was a pleasure and the large dining room seated our extended group perfectly and was very convivial. (We were there for a family reunion so that was important) Lois had left us all sorts of lovely treats which were much appreciated! There was also plenty to occupy any little people who came over; games, puzzles, colouring, and music and books for everyone.

The huge living room was great for get togethers when it was cold and windy and the garden and terrasse area perfect for the lovely sunny days we got too.(totally England in august!!)

With the beach a v short walk down the lane there was plenty to keep us occupied. The people in the local pub (the Stone Inn) were very friendly and we found a great restaurant in Mayland ( Hardy's Pub & Restaurant)

Lois, the owner, was very helpful and attentive.

I would definately recommend this property!

From the Owner

A Love song to Timbers: 'Do you ask what the birds say? The Sparrow, the Dove, The Linnet and Thrush say, 'I love and I love!' In the Winter they're silent - the wind is so strong; What it says, I don't know, but it sings a loud song. But green leaves and blossoms, and sunny warm weather, And singing and loving - all come back together. But the Lark is so brimful of gladness and love, The green fields below him, the blue sky above, That he sings, and he sings; and for ever sings he - 'I love my love, and my love loves me!'' (Samuel T Coleridge) At Timber you will sing like the lark and fall in love with the world.

Nearest Train : Southminster at 5 Miles Nearest Motorway : M25 at 30 Miles Nearest Beach : St Lawrence Bay at 100 Metres Car: recommended

With more than 350 miles the Essex coast is the longest of any English county. Timbers is set in the centre of these miles, surrounded by unspoiled coastline and wildlife, especially birds. Further afield are traditional English seaside resorts of Maldon, Clacton-on-Sea and Leigh-on-Sea, to name just a few. The closest sailing club to Timbers is Stone Sailing club, with Marconi sailing club a short walk along the sea wall, and Mayland sailing club around the corner. We are lucky to have full tide access to our slipway at Stone, and Timbers has it's own access to a privet slip way onto the foreshore.

Stow Maries Aerodrome is a must see. Recently the winner of the English Heritage Angel award voted for by English Heritage members and Telegraph readers, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is a unique and poignant reminder of a different time.

From the Owner

SO, what's so good about Timbers, why should you come here rather than some exotic place? Well to quote one of my young guests 'It's better than Corfu!' I would agree with him, for a start I don't like crowds, and then, there are always delays and hassles at airports not to mention the channel tunnel! But you could accuse me of being biased. I invite you to come and judge for yourself. Don't take my word for it, or his. Come and find out what exactly is so special about Timbers which makes it better than anywhere else! I could give you a few hints, maybe it's proximity to the River Blackwater, sparkling & warm; idea for open water swimming, sailing, rowing, & with spectacular sunsets? Or it could be the birds on the marsh, or the complete absence of any background hum or din. It could be the beautiful colonial building it's self that takes the weight of life off one's shoulders the minute you walk through the gates. It could be the garden, where you can curl up in the sun with a good book, or kick a football round with your family. Maybe you like cycling, maybe you like walking. Maybe you have a hankering like JK Jerone in 3 Men in a Boat for a place, 'far from the madding crowd, out of reach of the noisy world, from whence the surging waves of the 'twentieth' century sound far off and faint.'? Come to Timbers, and lulled by the lapping waters, dream that the world is young again!
