About the property

2 Bedroom House to Sleep 5 in a Rural Setting in the Loire Valley

La Grange des Hirondelles is a recently renovated property situated in a quiet hamlet of a dozen houses, 800 metres from the small village of Bournan. The hamlet of La Soultière is on a rise, and has superb far reaching views over the countryside. It is the only gite on the property. It is reached by a private drive way leading off the nearby public minor road, so traffic noise is almost non-existent, a fact many of our guests comment on. It also means that children can play safely around the gite, although parental supervision is always advisable. There is parking space alongside the gîte for two cars.

The Grange has its own large lawn (1000 sq m) with a children’s swing and a petanque (boules) court. To the rear of the building there is a covered terrace and planted courtyard where visitors can enjoy a secluded barbecue, an alfresco meal by candle light; or simply soak up the sun on the sun beds provided.

The swimming pool is 10m x 5m, and is surrounded by a paved area within a stone wall, meeting French pool security standards, and also providing privacy for pool users. The pool is heated if necessary during the summer (Price Bands A and B). There are wooden loungers and a sun shade around the pool.

The accommodation is very spacious, a fact that all of our guests remark on when they are first shown the property; in all there is over 140 square metres of floor space.

In the sitting room area is a large flat screen TV, receiving French terrestrial programmes, and English and other international programmes via satellite.

There is Wi-Fi in the sitting room of the gite.

The dining area has a table and six chairs. A baby's high chair is available on demand. The fully fitted kitchen has an oven, hob, microwave, toaster, and dishwasher. There are ample facilities for those that enjoy cooking.

The upstairs main bedroom has a double bed and a small single bed. An en-suite shower room with shower, washbasin, and WC opens off this bedroom. A baby's cot is available on request.

The downstairs bedroom has two single beds. There is also a bathroom downstairs with bath, washbasin, and WC.

Bikes can be hired locally, and there are three excellent 18 hole golf courses with driving distance. For those interested in wine, the renowned Vouvray (white) and Chinon (red) wine areas are nearby, where you can visit the vineyards and taste and buy direct.

About Mike Gregory

Mike and Cynthea moved to France from Oxfordshire in 1997. They bought this property, which was an old farm, in 2004, and have spent much time restoring it, including transforming an old stone built barn into a very large and comfortable gite. They are both now retired, and when time allows Cynthea enjoys cooking, and Mike is interested in the wines of the region.

Beautiful property with stunning panoramic views of the rolling countryside; the owners made us feel very welcome and comfortable throughout our stay. The gite is well equipped, boasts a stylish interior and provides ample space and comfort with excellent self-catering facilities. The property is situated in a quiet hamlet with the majority of essential amenities only a short drive away. The gite's location gives you a great sense of seclusion and security. Would have no hesitation in recommending this property.

Beautiful Gite and beautiful surroundings. Pool didnt reach temp until day 4 it was freezing. Dont expect to have this pool to yourselves. Bed and breakfast guest and owners can use it also. After reading the website and it saying exclusive use of the pool,we were very upset to learn of this. When showing the owners that it said exclusive use of the pool, they went on the website and changed it. House up for sale and as we were sat by the pool, the owner strolled in to show people around. I felt extremley uncomfortable led there in my bikini. On our last night at the Gite,my husband and children were enjoying one last swim when the owner came in and got in the pool with them. My holiday was spoilt because of false advertisement on the website. No privacy as owners walking round lots and having to walk infront of their house half naked to get to the pool was uncomfortable for me. If your looking for a private Gite....here in not the place!!!!!!

Owner's Response: We are sorry that everything was not to your satisfaction. We do try to ensure that our guests are happy, but in your case it was not easy. Doubtless you saw the guest book in the gîte with comments from happy clients over the last ten years who felt very differently to you. Your recollection about the temperature of the swimming pool during your stay is certainly not ours. We recall that you used the pool on the Saturday evening. My wife asked if everything was satisfactory on the Sunday afternoon as you were by the pool and your husband and children were in it. You replied that it was. However, your husband came to see my wife in an irate state on the Monday afternoon, saying that the temperature of the pool had dropped to 22°. She apologised and said that we had forgotten to cover the pool the previous evening. The pool heating was immediately turned on, and the temperature returned to 24°C that afternoon. You and your family used the pool later the same day. For the rest of the week the water temperature was over 26°C. The other people in the pool who you refer were a man and his son who used it for 30 minutes after breakfast on the Thursday morning. You had not used the pool in the mornings, nevertheless your husband went to see my wife again and complained that there were people in the pool. My wife told your husband that there was no reason at all why he couldn’t use the pool as well. You usually finished in the pool by 18:30, and then my wife and I would use the pool for 30 minutes. On the last evening your husband and two children were still in the pool at 18:45, so I went in for a quick swim. I did not realise this would cause a problem, as in a previous discussion with your husband he said he did not mind my wife and I using the pool. I do not understand your criticism about us walking around a lot. You will recall that it was very hot that week. We therefore stayed in our house during the day, and then did jobs like watering the plants in the evening. My wife and I are normally working inside the house most of the day and really don’t have time to notice you walking past the house, let alone what you are wearing. If you felt uncomfortable walking around “half naked”, surely you could have worn a wrap. Obviously you have very demanding expectations regarding exclusive use of the pool and the owners not using their own garden. I just hope that your next holiday rental does meet your expectations.

wonderful gite picturesque location and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

A beautifully appointed gite furnished to a high standard and very clean. We experienced a fabulous two week holiday here and would definitely recommend this accommodation. The owners Cynthia and Mike were discretely on site and there to answer any queries we had. The Loire is a stunning location and there is plenty to do to occupy a family. We will struggle to find another property and location of this standard for this price. All in all excellent.

Owner's Response: We are pleased that you found the gîte to your liking, and that you had a fabulous holiday here. We do believe that our gîte is very well located for exploring the Loire Valley, with its many attractions. We always try to be discreet, and let our guests decide how much contact we have with them. In your case we really enjoyed the chats we had with you and Emma, and we wish you all the best for the future.

A great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a thoroughly enjoyable week at Les Granges des Hirondelles. We were greeted warmly by Mike and Cynthea and they were excellent hosts. Photographs don't really show the size of the gite. It is spacious, delightful and very homely. The owners have put a lot of thought into equipping this property as it had everything we could ask for. A previous reviewer suggested that there may be lack of privacy when using the pool. We were fortunate in having very good weather during our holiday and we used the pool almost every day. We never felt overlooked and we thoroughly enjoyed using the pool....and sharing it with the delightful swallows who dipped and dived and entertained us. Walking 50yds to our own pool was not a problem! We chose this property for its rural location and I was surprised how easy it was to reach supermarkets and the main roads to various attractions. I would thoroughly recommend this property. It is spacious, comfortable and excellent value for money. Thank you Mike and Cynthea!

Wet week in generous gite

  • 3 of 5

Lovely, spacious and very clean gite, which you are expected to leave in the same state (or opt to pay a 60 euro cleaning bill). There was a smell of damp, particularly in the kitchen cupboards and furnishings, which was probably down to the amount of rain there had been recently. It was a bit off-putting but we did get used to it.

There is a great garden and a bespoke boules court as well as a small courtyard area with a barbecue. The pool is at the end of the drive, next to the owner's house. This was not made clear from the website and, should the weather have been nice enough to use it, I think would have been a bit inconvenient.

It is a remote location; We had hoped (from the website) that the nearest village would have bread but there is nothing within walking distance. On the plus side there are some nice off-road walks around the area.

Overall the amenities were well maintained and worked, though the internet was only obtainable in one particular place in the gite. Because of the weather (and the Euros!) we made good use of the satellite tv which was a bonus.

The owners were very friendly, but I think some people may find their proximity, with the pool by their house, a little lacking in privacy - so I would only recommend this gite with provisos.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay with us. It is true, the weather was dreadful with torrential rain virtually every day, enough rain to make any holiday maker feel unhappy. You were very unlucky. To our knowledge, it is normal practice in Europe that people who rent holiday homes are asked to clean the cottage or pay for somebody to clean it. We are very reliant on the co-operation of the people who use our rental property leaving it in a clean state. We have had occasions when the gîte has not been left in a good state and it has been very difficult to clean it to the appropriate standard in the short amount of time between one client’s departure and the arrival of the next client. On this occasion, Fiona and her family left it in a very clean state. Thank you. It is a shame that you didn’t mention the smell in the cupboard under the sink at the time. My husband has now looked at it, and found a small leak in the sink overflow pipe, which caused water to leak into the cupboard if the sink was over full. It took five minutes for him to mend it. We are pleased that you enjoyed the gardens and the boules court. We believe that we are very lucky to have such a large garden with such good views. The pool is around 50 metres from the holiday cottage, across the courtyard. There is a 1.2 metre high stone wall all around the pool, with a lot of tall plants on two sides of the wall, which together ensure the security and privacy of the guests using the pool. Yes, the gîte is in a fairly secluded situation. The position of the gîte, and the pool, can be seen quite clearly on Google Earth and this is shown on our own web-site. Many of our clients like the seclusion and tranquillity. However, the village of Bournan is only 900 metres from our property. There is a bar there which has a little shop for basics, including bread. There is also a boulangerie in the next village, which is three and a half kilometres away. Despite the bad weather, we are pleased that, as you said in our guest book, you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
