About the property

Luxury 2-bedroomed apartment

Our beautiful apartment is located in the charming old port area of Marseillan, Port Rive Gauche. Marseillan is a French community in the Hérault department in Languedoc- Roussillon , Midi-Pyrenees. Its inhabitants are called the Marseillanais.

Welcome to ESTREMAL, our apartment which is situated on the 3rd floor and features an open plan living area with beautiful French windows leading to the sun-drenched terrace. We now have balcony railings and the view is out of this world - it's perfect! Spend your days looking out over the Étang de Thau which changes on the hour from fantastic sunrises to mellow sunsets.

There are two comfortable double bedrooms, a living /dining area, a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom/WC. The apartment is suitable for four people; it could be a couple, a group of friends or a family with 2 children.

The apartment is accessed by a lift or the stairs and is wheelchair accessible as it is a single level apartment. The terrace allows outdoor living associated with the Mediterranean climate, with perfect private sunbathing opportunities and the option to sit and enjoy your leisure time. We have a triangular sail which provides shade from the intensity of the summer sun. There is an umbrella for the table and four chairs and plenty of room to stand leaning over the balcony enjoying the boat traffic and the endless panorama over the Bassin de Thau.

The decor is simple and comfortable and reflects our location on the South of France coast, our Irish sense of comfort allied with the local French chic. A leather sofa complements the look and we offer indoor and outdoor dining facilities. We have French TV, a DVD player and a very good internet connection for streaming.

As is common in this area of France our apartment has free WIFI access and an integrated air-conditioning/heating unit.

The kitchen area is fully equipped, with ample work surface, sink, fridge, dishwasher, 4 ring hob, toaster, Nespresso and filter coffee machine, iron and ironing board and a multifunction microwave/oven.

Each bedroom has its own individually controlled air-conditioning/heating thermostat, with side tables and lamps, and French doors to the communal terrace.

The bathroom has a freestanding deep double ended bath with an integral shower, a sink unit, heated towel rail, extractor fan and hair-dryer.

Estremal has a combined bathroom/WC.

Bed and bathroom linen are provided with the option to have fresh linen available for rentals of more than one week. Beach towels are also provided.

A child's high chair and travel cot is available locally, for rental on request.

A separate laundry area on the ground floor has a washing machine and drier and is available to all guests. We offer a weekly cleaning service for a reasonable fee.

Free street parking is available to the side and rear of the apartment building. Should you wish to use the secure on-site underground car park please note that the spaces are for medium size cars; mine is a larger space and so can fit larger cars and 4 x 4's. The remote for the garage door will be on the kitchen counter.

The apartments can be rented simultaneously by a larger group, if required.

I have a local agent, Carole Cummings, who will be available to help you should the need arise.

Children should be supervised at all times on the terrace. This is an important consideration given that there are open railings.

There is a children's playground with a small skate park within easy walking distance and the tennis courts are an easy walk, beyond the playground, about 1km away.

Windsurfing, kiteboarding, paddle boarding and sailing school are a short walk from the front door. Canal and boat trips can be easily arranged locally. There is a small Marseillan man-made beach but it doesn't compare with the expansive stretch of beaches at Marseillan Plage..

Marseillan sits on a large lagoon, the Étang de Thau, and is the southern entreport for the Canal du Midi. The port is a protected heritage site, and the altar and organ in the church are also listed. There has been virtually no new building in the heart of the village since the 17th century, and many of the houses date from the twelfth century. Marseillan enjoys an equable climate. Sheltered by the mountains of the Massif Central the weather systems from the north are seldom a problem. Marseillan has some 300 sunny days a year, and ground frosts (at worst) in mid-winter. From time-to-time a little snow falls, but this only dusts the ground and is gone by mid-day. The prevailing winds are from the south-west, and south. Marseillan receives the hot winds from the Sahara but, fortunately, does not suffer the pink sand that those winds carry out to sea. The Mistral blows down the Rhone valley and, although a northerly wind is sometimes referred to as a “mistral” it has none of the severity nor persistence of the true version.

Marseillan Port has an abundance of restaurants, cafe's and shops on the waterfront which is within walking distance of the apartment. The town is known for the production of the South of France aperitif, "Noilly Prat", and the distillery is just around the corner from the apartment. A guided tour of the winery is available.

An enjoyable 5 minute stroll will take you into the centre of Marseillan village, shops, chemist, post office, tabac, fruit shop and local wine producers, all the amenities that you would expect in a town. The church and town hall are both worth a visit. A large CARREFOUR, the French supermarket, and ALDI, are both on the outskirts of the town on the road to/from Agde. .

There is a street market on Tuesday and stalls in Les Halles, by the Church with a bric a brac in the boules area. On Friday evenings in the summer there are artisan stalls by the harbour.

Marseillan town offers a free local wifi access for everyone visiting, available on a daily basis in most public areas.

Over by the tennis courts there are a range of oyster food outlets, serviced directly by the fishermen, an opportunity to enjoy the regional delicacy. Eighteen varieties of shellfish are taken from the lagoon - the most important being oysters. 750 producers farm 2,750 oyster tables and take some 13,000 tonnes annually.

For the perfect beach day there are 10km of sandy beaches and the inviting Mediteranean sea in nearby Marseillan Plage. This area is perfect for swimming and sunbathing and lifeguards are on site in the summer months, with ample parking areas along the way.

Cycle hire is literally on the doorstep and a dedicated cycleway leads you safely around the southern edge of the Etang to Marseillan Plage and then along the sandy strip, all the way to Sete, a journey of about 23km. A French weekend passion is being 'in the saddle'. Our immediate area offers many safe and navigable back roads to challenge even the most experienced cyclist. Try heading inland amongst the many vines and gentle foothills of the region, a great way to scout out the local vineyards with lots of opportunities for wine tasting.

You can visit many UNESCO World Heritage sites in the region and many major tourist attractions: Pont du Gard, Arles, Canal du Midi, Gorges du Tarn, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert /Gorges de l’Hérault, Cirque de Navacelles, Carcassonne, Avignon, Albi and routes to Santiago de Compostela.

I would also recommend a trip to Chateau La Coste, an art and architecture park with beautiful vineyards and restaurant options. It's a 2 hour drive as it's located very near to Aix en Provence but well worth the effort.

The apartment allowed us to relax & revitalise

A beautiful peaceful setting overlooking the Harbour. Ideal location for elderly parents especially having an elevator within the apartment block. We look forward to returning at a future date.

Excellent in every way

This apartment was one of the best ones we have ever stayed - modern, spacious, lightful, stylish... and it has a truly phantastic view from all the rooms towards the Bassin de Thau. The apartment is very well equipped and spotlessly clean. We appreciated a lot the uncomplicated check-in/check-out.

Marseillan is a nice, calm village with lots to do within a short drive. We adored the half-day exploration tour to discover by boat the oyster farming, guided tour through the Noilly Prat Factory, finished with the degustation of fresh oysters.

Thank you sou much - we had a great holiday! We would definetly recommand the apartment and surely return ourselves to Marseillan soon.

Holidays in Marseillan in the Languedoc Region

Arriving in Marseillan we located our Rental Unit without any problem. Our Unit on the second floor was accessible by elevator which was a huge bonus as Brigitte had a fractured left foot and having to use crutches. The elevator also facilitated easy access to the garage.

We found the Unit to be beautifully furnished and well equipped with modern appliances. The layout was excellent as all rooms led to the balcony and provided views of the sea. We used the terrace/balcony regularly to have our breakfast and evening meals or just watching people and boats passing by as well as sun tanning.

The property was very clean and well maintained.

The location was perfect as it was just a short walk to the town centre and restaurants. We visited several restaurants and found them very satisfactory using them more than once during our three weeks stay. We feasted on fish and shellfish and lots of good local wines.

Furthermore, this location was ideal as a base for day trips in this Region which is famous for its many vineyards.

The owner and manager ensured that our holiday was completely enjoyable and relaxing.

The three weeks went by in a flash and we promised ourselves that we would return to this beautiful apartment in lovely Marseillan by the sea. We would definitely recommend this property to all our friends and relatives.

Fantastic stay in Marseillan

We spent a great two weeks staying in a beautifully furnished apartment overlooking the waterfront. The views from the balcony were stunning. The location of the property could not have been better as it was only a two minute walk to the quayside where we found a number of good restaurants and bars. A small supermarket was only 10 mins walk and the larger supermarket was a 5 minute drive.

Marseillan itself is a bustling place with plenty to do and see. During our stay there were several nights entertainment in the marina, comprising of wine tasting, live music, a night market and jousting with rowing boats!

Overall we had a great time and I would recommend the property for anyone considering a stay in Marseillan.

Great apartment, very nice location!

We are a family of four who've had a very nice 9 days vacation in Capitelle in July 2017. Everything went well and smooth - from booking and finishing the paperwork with the host, getting instructions, moving in and out and the apartment is indeed very nice. Lots of sun light, fresh air, beautiful view, nice area, car parking in the building, sheets and towels were nice and clean, everything was fine without any problems. I can easily recommend this place and the host as well.

Marseillan Plage is a purpose-built holiday resort on the Mediterranean, some 3 km (1.9 mi) from Marseillan Ville - the esplanade has recently been upgraded and offers endless lifeguard monitored beaches and multiple attractions for children. There's a large car boot sale there every Saturday and Sunday.

Cap d'Agde - 14km. 'Aqualand' (huge water-slides, etc.) 27-hole golf course, boat hire, deep sea fishing, scuba-diving, aquarium.

Cap d'Agde has a large family-style naturist resort.

The Village Naturiste is a large fenced-off part at the north-eastern edge of Cap d'Agde, although it is accessible along the public beach from the east. It is a self-contained town (sometimes referred to as the "Naked City"), where nudity is legal and common in the whole resort. A local tourist tax is charged per person, per day. The Naturist Village is a town by itself, with a 2 km (1 mi) beach, a large marina, 2,500 pitches campsite, apartment complexes, hotel, shops, restaurants, night clubs, bars, post office, bank and ATMs, launderettes, hairdressers and other facilities. In all there are about 180 businesses in the village. One can potentially spend an entire vacation without leaving the area or wearing clothes.

Agde - 10km -An old historic town and fishing port, founded by the Ancient Greeks. Agde is known for the distinctive black basalt used in local buildings, for example the cathedral of Saint Stephen, built in the twelfth century to replace a 9th-century Carolingian edifice built on the foundations of a fifth-century Roman church. It has a nice market and excellent seafood restaurants.

Sete - previously known as Cette - is a 23km drive along the seafront, known as the Venice of Languedoc and the singular island (in Paul Valéry's words). It is a port and a seaside resort with its own very strong cultural identity, traditions, cuisine and dialect. It is also the hometown of artists like Paul Valéry, Jean Vilar, Georges Brassens, Gregory Del Piero, Hervé Di Rosa, Manitas de Plata, and Robert Combas.

Beziers - 25km - one of the oldest cities in France.

The latest research (March 2013) shows that Béziers dates from 575 B.C., making it older than Agde (525 B.C.) and a bit younger than Marseille (600 B.C.). It is famous for its aqueduct called the Pont-canal de l'Orb claimed to be the first of its kind.

Béziers was the first place to be attacked by the crusaders in 1209. Béziers' Catholics were given an ultimatum to hand over the heretics or leave, but they refused and resisted with the Cathars. The town was sacked on July 22, 1209 and no one was spared in the bloody massacre. When asked by a Crusader how to tell Catholics from Cathars once they had taken the city, the abbot supposedly replied, Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius. ("Kill them. For the Lord knew His own.")

Béziers hosts the famous Feria de Béziers, centred on bullfighting, every August. A million visitors are attracted to the five-day event. Béziers is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network and hosts a Friday flower market in the Allees Paul Riquet.

Pezenas - 20km - a very attractive medieval town with a Saturday morning market. It's worth a stroll around just to look at the old town centre with narrow streets and rather grand Town Houses from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, when Pézenas was the seat of the Governors of Languedoc. The ministry lists 116 historical edifices in Pézenas, more than 30 of which are protected after being classified "Historical Monuments".

Narbonne - 47km - Once a prosperous port, and a major city in Roman times, is now located about 15 km (9.3 mi) from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Narbonne is linked to the nearby Canal du Midi and the Aude River by the Canal de la Robine, which runs through the centre of town.

Montpellier - 55km - the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region is a large university town. It is the 8th largest city in France and is the fastest growing city in the country over the past 25 years. Montpellier is one of the few larger cities in France without any Roman heritage and one of the few cities in southern France without a Greek foundation.

Nîmes - 95km - a truly unexpected and exciting discovery, has a rich history dating back to the Roman Empire when the city was home to 50,000 – 60,000 people. Several famous monuments are in Nîmes - the Nîmes Arena and the Maison Carrée. Because of this, Nîmes is often referred to as the French Rome.

Château La Coste - 196km - Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, a winery combined with an outstanding art and architecture trail that has earned a star in the Michelin travel guide, sits in gently rolling hills just north of Aix en Provence. I would highly recommend it as a day trip.
