About the property

3 Bedroom Cottage, Sleeps 5. Suitable for Families and Couples

Our lovely waterfront cottage provides flexible, light and airy accommodation in the lovely village of Rowhedge which is is ideally located for easy access to the Essex seafront at Mersea Island, Brightlingsea, Walton and Clacton as well as being 10 minutes from Colchester town centre, an hour from London and 45 minutes from the popular Suffolk coastal region including Snape, Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Southwold.

The property is right on the waterfront in the heart of this quiet and welcoming village. The house is surprisingly spacious and has been newly refurbished. It very comfortably sleeps 5 and has a double bedroom with en suite, a twin bedroom, a single bedroom and family bathroom and there is easily room for a travel cot as well. There is a large living area with comfortable seating, a dining table and chairs, a modern kitchen with all the appliances and a small back garden which is a real sun trap and lovely for outdoor dining. There are two assigned parking spaces.

This is our much loved home and is regularly used by us and our family and friends.

Rowhedge is a quite village with a welcoming community and is convenient for access. There is a Co-op, a post office and the excellent Anchor pub and restaurant as well as the Albion a little further along the village.

The cottage's pièce de résistance is the view across the river Colne estuary to the picturesque village of Wivenhoe and the nature reserve, it is a tranquil and lovely start to every day.

Lovely cottage with a beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is clean, cozy and well equipped. Besides, it is really quiet, as it faces the river and offers a beautiful view. Great location to visit Colchester!

Alphamstone, Essex

Rowhedge Waterfront Cottage — an astonishing River Colne-side house, 5* for Little Egrets & others!

  • 5 of 5

The house itself struck me firstly as charmingly quirky, and grew on me until by the end of my 7-night stay I felt quite at home. Rowhedge has ten-star nostaligia value for me as it's where I met my first love, and I returned after all this time to remember it, before leaving Essex soon after many decades for the Atlantic Ocean, and Braunton, North Devon. However what will stay in my mind forever in Rowhedge is the bird life on the River Colne. It has obviously been better in the past, but then everything in the natural world now seems to be declining at such an alarming rate. It's a fairly clean river as there is plenty of life under those rather drab brown/grey mudflats, ragworm and lugworm certainly and much else. Redshank aplenty, Black-tailed Godwit, a few Curlew, always good to see, as they're in a spot of trouble at the moment; Teal, Mallard, Dabchick, Cormorant, the inevitable Black-headed Gulls, several thousands of them flying upriver each morning in the pre-dawn light (makes a wonderful film!). One of the days was sunny and 20 degrees, there were four Swallows, Red Admirals, bumblebees, with midges in the evening, most unusual for late October; a few Lesser Black-backed Gulls, the occasional Grey Heron, but the icing had to be that Mythical White Bird, the Little Egret, wonderful to watch foraging along the waters edge and spearing prey with that long black beak, occasionally comical in its modus operandi – just has to be watched – but in flight it becomes one of the most graceful birds you could wish to see, particularly just after sunrise when I managed a few shots of it in flight low above the saltmarsh with the houses of Wivenhoe behind, sidelit by an orange fire as the day began. One of those rare magical moments in wildlife photography, and I hope very much to return. Two local waterfront pubs, The Anchor and The Albion, both welcoming and friendly, make excellent places to relax after a day out, with the river carrying much interesting boat traffic. The people are pleasant & kind, however I feel for them now with all the building that's taking place – it will unfortunately change the spirit of Rowhedge, although naturally it will have also have changed since I was there. I remembered virtually nothing of it, and it was as if many little lights began slowly coming on seeing it again. I look forward very much to returning next year!

Peaceful and quiet with a beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean ,well equiped and comfortable. Nicely furnished with a wonderful view.We watched several sunrises over Wivenhoe woods, and saw a seal one day. We made visits to Beth Chattos garden, West Mersea,Fingringhoe nature reserve Wivenhoe and Colchester: all within easy reach. We would definitely like to return.

A first rate pleasant property.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this very pleasant property in the excellent village of Rowhedge. The outlook from the property was splendid. The property itself was well appointed ( not over cluttered like some cottages), clean and tidy.

We were lucky enough to have picked a week of splendid hot and dry weather.

We recommend the local pub - the Anchor - for its excellent food.

We will seriously consider visiting again.

About Heather Waugh

Our parents originally bought this house as their retirement home and my brother and I now own it. We grew up in Colchester and although our parents moved to Kent when we grew up they returned to the area when they retired and stumbled upon this lovely cottage whilst out for a walk one day, it was love at first sight.

We are both busy professionals with families but our roots remain in the Colchester area and we love this house for its tranquil location, it's warm atmosphere and its happy family memories.

We all regularly use the cottage as a retreat and for family get togethers.
