A Ropemakers cottage in the market town of Bridport close to the Jurassic Coast

Overview

Property

Updated: 05-Dec-2016

Welcome to Pinchens Cottage. A former Ropemakers (workers) cottage close to the centre of Bridport, West Dorset recognised as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The cottage is lovingly furnished in an eclectic style with many vintage finds from the local markets and hand-made soft furnishings.

Mr Pinchen, a Ropemaker, along with his wife Mrs Pinchen, a Twine Binder, lived in the cottage in 1863 with their 3 children, and now we’d like to share the space with you. A home from home.

A Ropemakers cottage with one double bedroom and one twin room. The cottage has a comfortable living room with wood burner and a newly fitted cottage style kitchen/diner.

Downstairs the front door opens onto a cosy living room with a wood-burner, plenty of seating, cushions and blankets. Books/games/jigsaws/DVDs are also available to use. The kitchen/diner has comfortable seating for 4 and is well equipped with oven, fridge, washing machine, microwave and plenty of storage under the stairs.

Upstairs the first floor has a twin bedroom and bathroom with bath and shower above the bath. More storage can be found in the airing cupboard next to the bathroom. A further staircase leads to an open plan double bedroom in the loft, with lovely views across the town to Boarsbarrow Hill and surrounding countryside.

There is a detached enclosed garden well away from roads which you are welcome to use.

Pinchens Cottage is a 10 minute walk from the centre of the friendly and vibrant market town of Bridport and nestles under Allington Hill & Coopers Wood in the village of Allington. Explore the Saturday morning market or watch the world go by in one of the many restaurants, pubs or cafes sprinkled around the town.

The stunning cliffs and beaches of the World Heritage Jurassic coast are a 5 minute drive away (or a 25 minute walk along the River Brit) at West Bay, and Bridport is the perfect base to explore the surrounding area from, with Lyme Regis, Dorchester and Chesil Beach all within half an hour drive.

Homely cottage and good value for money

  • 4 of 5

We were given clear directions and information about the cottage before our stay, which was very helpful. The cottage, whilst on a busy road, is in a very good location, just a short walk into Bridport. The cottage itself is well equipped and very homely. It was great to have use of the garden too.

Lovely property in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely lovely cottage (spacious & comfortable, with excellent facilities) right on the edge of Bridport town. Great location, giving easy access to many parts of Dorset whether by foot or car. We had a lovely week here and would definitely book again! Neighbours were very friendly and helpful too. Would highly recommend this charming, well equipped home. Good communication from the owner too; very helpful.

Lovely cottage with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. Very close to Bridport town, (walking distance) and short run to West Bay.

Lovely and quiet neighbours. Little shop on the corner, and nice walk up Allington Hill, just opposite.

Bright and airy cottage. Will definitely stay again.

Ropemakers cottage

We were very disappointed with the cottage. The lack of room in the attic bedroom plus no where to hang our clothes. The break down of the T V. Impossible to park outside and the lack of privacy in kitchen blinds would have help. bathroom hand held shower just dribbled out when trying to rinse hair. Combined with the weather did not make for a good holiday

Owner's Response: We're sorry you felt the cottage only deserved a 1 star review. We love spending time in our cottage and have spent a lot of time trying to make the space as comfortable as possible. The cottage dates from 1863 so naturally it is very small, but we have tried to make the most of the space available. An electric shower was recently installed (June 2016) and we have not received any other complaints about the new shower, but I will look into this. The TV was not broken, it states clearly on the website and in the information sent to you, that the TV can only be used for watching DVDs as there is no signal available through the aerial. Parking is an issue in the whole of Bridport as it is a busy working market town. We don’t advertise that there is parking but we do try to suggest suitable places to park close to the cottage. We feel our prices reflect the location and limitations of the cottage, and we try to give as much information as possible about the cottage on the website, including lots of photos, so that people can make an informed choice about whether to book or not. Bridport is a lovely town in a beautiful part of the country, so we do hope you will visit the area again.

whilst the

location was geographically very good for access to the town ,we felt their were limitations.

we didn't appreciate when booking that the property was on a very noisy, main road.

the garden being accessible via a path thru' another resident's garden was only inconvenient and might be deemed inappropriate for young children that need supervision.

the shower did not function.

however, the neighbours were most hospitable!

despite mixed weather we had a super time exploring the beautiful countryside and coastline.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for leaving a review. Based on your feedback we have made some improvements to the cottage. We have now installed an electric shower (Jun 2016) which gives a more constant temperature and flow. I appreciate it isn’t clear when booking which road the cottage is on, and we will make people more aware of this when they book in future. Bridport is a busy, thriving market town and the farm traffic can rattle a few windows occasionally. A lot of houses in Bridport have very limited outside spaces and we feel the garden is a great additional space for people to use if they want to, and the neighbours are very friendly and understanding about the access. I’m glad you had a nice holiday despite the weather. Bridport is in a beautiful area with lots to see and do and hopefully you’ll visit again.

For a small family and a short stay the cottage is good option and not too far from the town centre. The cottage is well equiped, well looked after, nice views from the back windows and the beds are confortable. However, there are a few points which I would like to highlight - 1) Heating - the cottage took a while to heat although the wood burner took away some of the chill on the ground floor, it wasn't until the night storage heaters kicked-in on the 2nd day that the upper floors and bedrooms were warm enough; 2) Hot water - we were warned but for a family it is not at all practical to make milimetre adjustments in order to avoid being either burned or experiencing very cold water. The water pump was very noisy and sometimes didn't "kick-in" at all if the pressure of the cold water was higher. I think some investment should be made here; 3) Traffic - the cottage is on one of the major roads into the town from the north and the traffic was constant from around 8am to 8pm and could be heard throughout the house. The house literally shook when large vehicules drove by and many drivers didn't seem to respect the speed limit (if there was one) - however, this is more of an issue for the Town council to deal with; and 4) Car parking - again, we were warned, but all the roads around the cottage were full and the solution of using one of the town centre carparks was not practical for us with two young children and for loading/unloading luggage or shopping. Unfortunately, my hire-car was slightly damaged, due to the fact that all the surrounding roads and streets are narrow and parked on both sides, and someone scrapped the rear bumper of my car - which meant that I had to pay for the damage :-(

Owner's Response: Many thanks for leaving a review. Based on your feedback we have made some improvements to the cottage. We have now installed an electric shower (Jun 2016) which gives a more constant temperature and flow. The road the cottage is on was once one of the main routes into Bridport. Whilst this is probably the least busy road in and out of Bridport today it’s still a busy, thriving market town. I appreciate the farm traffic can rattle a few windows occasionally. At the weekend it’s much quieter but we’ll make people aware of this when they book in future. The parking in Bridport is a challenge wherever you go as this is a busy working market town. Unfortunately this is the nature of the area. We will however make this clearer on the website for other people booking. I’m sorry to hear about the car, that’s very frustrating. I hope all of the above won’t put you off visiting Bridport, or Dorset again. It’s a beautiful area with lots to see and do and hopefully you’ll visit again.
