About Graham Shenton

Graham and Cecilia Shenton live in Swindon, Wiltshire in the UK. Graham grew up in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia. He spent his working life in electronics working in Australia, UK/Europe and the USA. Cecilia is a physiotherapist who still practices on patients who are well enough to climb the stairs to her attic treatment room.

Graham Shenton purchased this house in 1994

Why Graham Shenton chose County Cork

We were staying with friends in Castletownshend and saw Traharta one wet Saturday morning. We walked down the steps from the car park to the rocks, looked at each other and said, 'we`ve not seen the house yet, but we`re going to buy it'. We`ve never regretted it.

What makes this house unique

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

This has got to be the most beautiful spot in the whole of Ireland. If you want to get away from it all; this is it. This is raw, natural beauty. Pictures simply can't do justice to the sublime, tranquil view of the bay that this property feels like it owns all to itself. We, a family of four, have rented both the house and cottage for the last 10 years in the Summer. We're well travelled, but nothing compares with this location. Either property is perfect with children, they are on the beach in 30 seconds. Our children love rock pooling, swimming, kayaking and clambering over the rocks; especially to the near offshore island at low tide. There is none of the hassle of getting mucky children into a car or finding a toilet, it's all on the doorstep. We take out our kayak daily to catch mackerel, which go straight onto the BBQ. Fish don't come fresher than that. This year, we were lucky enough to be joined by dolphins and seals swimming around our kayak near the cottage, even though they were also after the mackerel! The quiet lanes around the area are adorned with wild flowers, dairy farms and idyllic panoramas of the dramatic Atlantic coastline of W Cork. Both properties are cosy and comfortable and have everything you need. The smaller property is a beautiful Irish cottage with ample room for 4. The larger property is huge with its top and front gardens, stunning terrace and panoramic flat roof. The internet works fine but don't expect mod cons here like a massive flat screen TV. It's not that kind of place. The Irish weather inevitably has its occasional risks, but take jigsaws, board games and baking stuff for rainy days. The children love it. Take wet suits to enjoy swimming in the sea for long periods and aqua shoes for rocks. The water is crystal clear and well suited to snorkelling. It's near Skibereen, where you can stock up on fresh, local supplies. Also near local villages with good pubs . Excellent fishmonger at Union Hall. A car is absolutely necessary. Enjoy it, but don't let too many people know! Once you've found it, you'll want to keep it a secret.

Peaceful, charming location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful vacation in Ireland and loved the cottage on the water. Beautiful idyllic views of the sea and farmland surround this property. My grandchildren loved the beach for exploring and playing and being able to walk to Flea Island when the tide was out.

The kitchen was well equipped for breakfast and simple evening meals. The beds were very comfortable. The large dining table gave us a place for playing games with the children in the evening. A bathroom for each bedroom was great when we were all up and getting ready for the day.

This is a perfect spot for a low key vacation. It is a distance from any of the major tourist attractions due to the narrow and winding roads that make the Irish countryside unique and charming. We eliminated a few plans after we discovered the remote nature of the home, but have no regrets for choosing this home away from home.

There are lovely restaurants, pubs and shops in Skibbereen, Castletownsend and Baltimore. Groceries easily acquired in Skibberreen.

Stunning location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for one week (couple without children) in the small cottage. Despite the fact that we could not enjoy the lovely terrace with the view, we enjoyed every moment of our stay. We liked the area, magnificent view, richful heritage and interesting stories. The cottage was fine, well equipped with a small but sunny terasse at the back.

Breathtaking!

  • 5 of 5

This is our first trip to Ireland and we were looking for a relaxing home to be our base as we toured southern Ireland! What attracted me the most was the the photo of the table on the terrace overlooking the water! We arrived late at night and awoke to the spectacular view!! Each bedroom and the living room have window doors that open onto the delightful terrace! We were able to enjoy breakfast on the terrace! So relaxing after a long day of travel to take in the view and sunshine!! Everyone is so friendly. Wonderful grocery stores in town! We feel very blessed to have stayed here!!!

For a dream vacation, book this!!!

  • 5 of 5

What to say about such a spectacular place??? The house and property are stunning. Really, everything you need for a wonderful stay is right here, whether you have friendly weather or foggy, rainy days. We had the latter, but the house was cozy with a warm fire in the fireplace and, having a car, we were able to explore the surrounding area (Baltimore, Castletownshend, Skibbereen, Glengarriff, Bantry,...).

The owner is a dream to work with -- very accomodating! We would go back in an instant.

absolutely paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year to stay at Traharta House. We love the house and we love the location. In fact, this year we rescheduled our dates to travel to Ireland so that we could have this property once more. The location is beyond words. It is a perfect spot to relax, unwind, enjoy the beauty of the sea and this lovely land. The house is welcoming and comfortable. It has all of the facilities you could want and is very inviting for your stay. We enjoyed cooking while we were here and the kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans and equipment to do so. As the evenings were a bit cook in October, we often built a fire and just relaxed in the great room, reading or watching television. On the sunny days we would sit on the gorgeous patio , watching the sea, enjoying a good cup of tea or glass of wine. The owner, Mr. Shenton, makes the reservation process easy and is a delightful person to work with in securing a stay. If we needed anything at all, Mrs. Cleary, the local care taker, was quick to help us out. There is nothing about this house, this property that you will not enjoy and appreciate. Anyone who stays here will feel the same way as we do - it is absolutely paradise. In fact , we love it so much, we are already booked for 2014. I highly recommend and encourage you to check Traharta House out.- you will be glad you did.
