About the property

4 Bedrooms, Sleeps 7, Swimming Pool in Summer, wood burner for the cooler months

Furzeland Down Cottage is newly renovated, refurbished and furnished and new to the holiday letting market.

Tastefully decorated in neutral shades it comfortably sleeps seven people (There is a comfortable folding bed for an eighth guest if required, at no extra charge).

There is a 4' 6'' double bedroom on the ground floor, a 5' double bedroom, and a twin bedded room with two 3' singles on the first floor, also a curtained cabin bed in the mezzanine bedroom. This bed would delight anyone but certainly encourage any youngster to look forward to bedtime (it comes with a wind-up torch),

The cottage is set in a beautiful, private location with wonderful views and walks, just five minutes from the ancient stannary town of Tavistock and village of Yelverton and twenty minutes from the City of Plymouth.

This is a great base for foodies, with fabulous walks, horse riding, cycling and sight seeing.

There are lots of great local National Trust properties and beautiful gardens to discover such as Buckland Abbey (home of Sir Francis Drake) or The Garden House which are both at Yelverton, Cotehele at St Dominic or Castle Drogo at Drewsteignton.

Perhaps you'll choose to enjoy a delightful walk through Bellever Forest or Wistmans Wood, taking in the clapper bridge at Postbridge followed by a delicious Sunday roast at one of the many foodie pubs or perhaps a trip to Morwellham Quay or Lydford Gorge. For the children perhaps a trip to The Dragon Archery Centre at Okehampton, or a day at the Tamar Trails Centre for zip wire rides through the woods, biking and canoeing or a family picnic and bike ride around Burrator reservoir.

During the Summer months have a cooling swim in the pool before taking off to explore the area, come back and enjoy a barbecue in your own private garden or a game of backgammon at the pool bar before changing and going out to one of the great local restaurants, bistros or pubs (and if you enjoy yourself too much there are plenty of very friendly, reasonably priced taxis we can recommend to bring you home).

Have fun, relax and enjoy yourselves.

About Rosemary

I was a film editor and worked for both the BBC and ITV.

I have a keen interest in interior design, sewing, cooking and up-cycling furniture (among lots of other things).

I am mother to Victoria who is in her final year at University studying Chemistry, Rollo who eventually hopes to study Economics and Pollyanna who is reading English at University in America, I am Mormor to 7 year old Scarlett - Victoria's daughter.

My husband Gerald and I live in the house nearby with Lil our 16 year old jack russell and Bella our 10 year old golden retriever. We also have 3 cats, Saffron who is 19 tears old and her two 'kittens' Turbo and Buffy who are now 18. We also have a gaggle of free ranging chicken, many are wonderfully inquisitive ex battery hens and several are rare breeds which one our a broody hen adopted as day old chicks.

Rosemary purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Rosemary chose West Devon

Furzeland Down Cottage is within Dartmoor National Park and part of a UNESCO World heritage site.

We have 20 acres in all, some of which is bluebell woodland - a sight to behold from May into June.

You are welcome to explore the woods at your leisure, you may find the family of deer who live here and see badger at night. There is no light pollution so we have lovely starry nights and you'll wake to hear the wonderful bird song in the mornings.

The swimming pool is there for you to enjoy during the Summer months and share with us but it is not attended. The gate from your private garden to the pool area has a bolt for you to use to ensure any 'little' people you may have can't wander into the pool area without an adult in attendance.

The pool is generally open for you to enjoy from about 9.30 to 2.30 and 4.00 until 6.30 but we can made it available for you to use outside these times by arrangement. It is cleaned and maintained daily. The pool can get as warm as 32 degrees during bouts of really hot weather but it averages about 26 degrees.

What makes this cottage unique

A perfect place for you to explore Dartmoor and the surrounding area, by car, on foot or by bicycle - the national cycle route is just across the road from the property, where you can cycle (or walk) as far as North Devon in one direction and South Brittany in the other. There is a bike store behind the cottage which you are welcome to use should you bring bikes (we also have a few bikes which you may borrow).

Its great walking country and there are plenty of horse riding establishments for those that fancy taking the views in while in the saddle, the scenery is awesome.

The World class City of Plymouth is only 25 minutes away.

We are blessed in this part of the world with great producers of food, so come and enjoy the local produce, whether rustled up in the cottage kitchen or at one of the many fine restaurants or foodie pubs in the area - all known personally!

The stunning beaches and scenery along the peninsula of Devon and Cornwall are within a short drive. Salcombe, Padstow, Newquay, Torquay, Fowey, Polperro, the list is endless....

Beautifully equipped Cottage with Swimming Pool, Garden and Woodland ( dogs welcome too)

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is simply beautiful- and no expense has been spared creating a holiday home which is comfortable, elegant and practical. The cream tea on arrival was a lovely touch after a long journey ! Our hosts were very friendly and helpful- and despite being on their doorstep ( literally) were very discrete and not intrusive at all.

The cottage is well planned, with an open-plan ground floor making it very sociable, and practical. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of good quality crockery and cutlery, pots and pans etc so that you can self-cater without compromising. The dishwasher is a bonus, as are the washer and drier.

Plenty of hot water for the shower, although there is only one toilet in the cottage itself which is in the bathroom- so something to be aware of. ( The pool house does have a second shower and toilet as a back up)

The beds are really comfortable, with quality bedding and duvets, and all towels were provided. Really nice touches such as cushions and throws, board games ( which we played every day!) a huge selection of books to read and the cabin bed made the whole stay extra special for us. WiFi connection was reliable - so we managed to keep connected to the real world too!

The cottage is situated within the stunning grounds of the main house- with its own dedicated garden area and access to the swimming pool and pool house. The pool is fabulous, and we used it every day . The garden has seating, swings and table tennis, and is fully enclosed for toddlers/ dogs. ( Although be aware that the free range chickens wander in occasionally and we nearly had a mishap with our labrador who thought she might be dinner!) The views over the surrounding countryside are breathtaking; this combined with the tranquility of the location ensures you can recharge your batteries and unwind. We loved exploring the woodland, and the dogs particularly enjoyed charging round and letting off steam.

A short drive to Tavistock - a great ( if quaint) market town with various cafes and shops - and a pretty river. There is a market every day - lots to see and do- try Dolly's Cafe adjacent to the market- great food and service and dogs welcome outside.

We did venture further afield - including Salcombe beach ( very busy and pretty) and Barnstaple ( to meet up with old friends - a great pub called The Cedars at Fremlington- highly recommend ) We also braved Splashdown Waterpark near Torquay- great fun ( although we were rained off ! )

Lovely family accommodation

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful place to stay! The accommodation is decorated to a very high standard and the location is perfect for exploring Devon. Unfortunately we only had 1 day of sunshine but the pool was a godsend. Rosemary has thought of everything you need inside and out for a great holiday. Very child and pet friendly and there's some fab places to eat around this area. The Rock Inn is very good and also the Leg O Mutton is handy for a chinese takeawy or sit down meal. If you love cake and cream tea's, Karen's is Tavistock is just the place. Would definately return and recommend to friends and family.

A great property in a lovely location. The cottage was spotlessly clean, the cream tea on arrival was excellent and the freshly laid eggs that Rosemary gave us were delicious. Had a lovely walk through the woods, explored the "Cleave" and saw derr and a fox!

Notes:
In springtime the daffodils are stunning, standing to attention along the half mile long driveway and on the bank near the cottage. Also the bluebell woods are heavenly through May and June and the rhododendron and camellia from April are a riot of colour against the green of the woodland. We have sculpted walks (rides) through the woodland, typical ancient woodland. We have a cricket net, please ask if you would like to use it. Dartmoor is world class walking and horse riding country - come and enjoy it. The national cycle path (route 27) is across the road from Furzeland Down. Plymouth Hoe is 20 minutes away.
