About the property

4 Bedroom, 2 bathroom, heated pool,quiet location.Great for families.

Les Violettes is situated in the peaceful, ancient village of Haimps,in the Cognac/Pineau producing area, surrounded by acres of vineyards and sunflowers. The space which used to be a working farm is totally enclosed by walls and once the gate is shut the rest of the world can disappear. Beautifully furnished and equipped throughout, Les Violettes has large, airy living rooms which stay cool even on hottest of days. There are 4 bedrooms - the principal bedroom is large, with a super king size bed, the second has a king size bed, the third, two single beds and the fourth, two double bunk beds. A cot is available. The bath/shower room and separate toilet are also situated upstairs.

Downstairs, the kitchen/dining room (which has a sitting area set around a fireplace with inset wood burner ), leads out on one side to the spacious sitting room which includes two sofas and features an 18th century Charentaise stone fireplace. This lounge, in turn, leads to a second lounge with two sofas, satellite TV and Wi-Fi. A utility room with a large 2nd fridge/freezer,washing machine, shower and dual hand basins as well as the second toilet can all be accessed from the other side of the kitchen. The kitchen itself is well-equipped and leads directly outside to a tranquil space that gets full sun most of the day. Sitting here, usually with a chorus of birdsong, a pair of Hoopoes might be spotted clinging the the walls, trying to extract insects with their long beaks, or the local eagle as he circles around. You will also meet Louis Le Grand, our resident lizard and several petits Louis, as they bask in the sun.

Facing here is the old wagon way with its lovely features. It is a magical place to sit, out of the sun or on a balmy evening. There is a good sized trampoline here, as well.

Across the lawn brings you to the crowning glory of this place; the pool and pool house, where the whole day could be spent as there is a kitchen with all facilities and crockery, including a barbecue. The heated pool has a shallower shelf running all the way round that doesn’t impede swimming. There is an outdoor warm shower also. The pool is shared with the swallows who like to dip down mid-flight to take a gulp of water as they pass us.

Close by is Matha, a typical market town with a full range of shops incl. supermarkets. 20 minutes’ drive away is Cognac, for the distilleries, or St Jean D'Angely for the restaurants and farmers markets. Explore the Roman amphitheatre in nearby Saintes.

The sea is an hour drive away with beaches on the Atlantic coast, on the Iles de Re, and d'Oleron, with their nearby towns of Rochefort, Royan and La Rochelle, which also happens to be the nearest airport.

Rental is from Saturday to Saturday.

About Colin Johnson

I am a ceramist making both pottery and ceramic light sculptures and wall panels.

My work can be seen at as well as at Les Violettes

I live in Hastings, UK, when not in Haimps. I am married with two children and three grandchildren.

Colin Johnson purchased this farmhouse in 2015

Why Colin Johnson chose Haimps

We looked at thousands of properties on-line, when we went to look at some of those selected we called this one ''The 'wow!' house"!

We felt a real sense of history with all the unique features, like the fireplaces, the wagon-way and the well. Any new work that has been done to the property has been done sensitively with respect to what was already there, for example the pool and pool-house.This part of Les Violettes is stunning and our estate agent said it was the best pool area he'd ever seen.

I felt a great sense of peace and excitement when I first visited the property and still do, every time we open the gates and drive in.

What makes this farmhouse unique

This is a real 'home from home'. The house is extremely well-equipped, the garden is safe and beautiful, with remarkably varied bird life. (If you're lucky, you may even spot woodpeckers, goldfinches or hoopoes on the lawn outside the kitchen, or the local eagles who 'air-patrol' the surrounding fields looking for their next meal!) The pool area is a wonderful sun trap, but there are ample huge parasols for shade if you so desire. The pool house has everything you need to barbecue or cook and serve a meal for 10+. There's even a dishwasher there so you don't have to do the washing up yourself!

Lovely house well off the beaten track.Pool house and pool area were well used and ideal for us all.

  • 4 of 5

A proper 'get away from it all' location. The bedrooms were large and spacious and it was nice to be able to sit all 9 of us around the table both in the house and next to the pool area. Plenty of storage space in the kitchen and all that we needed to prepare and cook food. Wifi worked well although more time was spent in and around the pool than on phones!

The pool area was very secluded and the close proximity of the pool house meant that we could base ourselves next to the pool and keep an eye on everyone. All in all a very relaxing holiday with some nice towns to visit within 40 mins drive. Kayaking in Cognac was particularly good!

Truly fabulous

  • 5 of 5

This place is truly fabulous. The house is very spacious and beautifully equipped. The outside space is great - and plenty big enough for a large group. The pool and poolhouse are just wonderful - hard to drag yourself away from. The location is great too. Beautiful Cognac is nearby and La Rochelle and Ile de Re are just over an hour away. We have rented many places in France and this was the nicest place we have ever stayed. If you're thinking of booking it, just do it, you will not regret it.

Beautiful house , amazing pool area and everything you needed for a perfect holiday for a family

  • 5 of 5

We were 6 adults and 4 children .

House was great , so well equipped .

The pool house and pool were beautiful . The fact that it could all be locked up made it perfect so we didn't have to worry about the children accidentally going near on their own .

Lovely area with fantastic restaurant within walking distance .

We were all sad to leave and wished we were staying for another week !

The house is so much better than the photos on the website show .

Thank you

Exactly what a French gite should be

  • 5 of 5

The gite and surrounding gardens and pool area felt very spacious and there was lots for young children to do whilst being safely enclosed. The pool and pool hut were fabulous. The local village and surrounding area is remote so it is very quiet although there is a lovely restaurant within walking distance. The local boulangerie on the Matha (local town) roundabout is excellent and has a notice board with lots of interesting information including local babysitters etc. Mosquitoes were quite prevalent in the evening despite all efforts of the landlord so best to come prepared for this.

A relaxing retreat that suits all ages .

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful house, beautiful pool and gorgeous Swallows taking a dip ! Haimps is a hidden treasure in the surroundings of cognac ! Grape vines and sunflowers make it even more picturesque. The pool was the biggest hit ( even though the temp outside was hot) we would have liked the pool heated as advertised . Sadly this was our only flaw . Overall we had an absolutely fantastic holiday! Thank you ....

Owner's Response: Thanks for your positive review. I am sorry about the pool heating but we were promised that the malfunction would be rectified well in advance of your visit, but the replacement part also had a problem. My family came down the week after you and found the pool temperature (at 25 degrees C) refreshing after lying in the sun.
