Kilderkin Cottage cleverly combines a traditional Purbeck stone exterior with the bright and generous interior space of modern open plan living. This exceptional property is newly fitted to a high standard with comfortable furnishings and modern conveniences. “Added touches” ensure it offers a home from home ideal for families, couples and groups of friends anytime of the year.

Dorset’s Purbeck district offers some of the most scenic views in England, including the dramatic cliffs of The World Heritage Coast, pristine sandy beaches, heaths, and rolling downs. Swanage and Wareham and a scattering of quaint villages will reveal a rich variety of attractions to suit all tastes and ages.

The quiet coastal village of Langton Matravers is within Dorset’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB) and surrounded by National Trust land. On the edge of the village, in a conservation area and quiet private road is Kilderkin Cottage with two reserved car spaces. From here all of Purbeck is easily reached by road. The village stores and the local pub, serving good value “pub grub” food, are only a short walk away. For children the recreation ground is just a stone’s throw away. Hourly a bus runs to Swanage and Wareham.

A network of way-marked footpaths leads directly from the doorstep into the ANOB. A 20 minute stroll over fields will take you to spectacular sea cliff views of the World Heritage Coast. Perhaps Dorset‘s most quirky and charismatic pub, The Square and Compass, is an easy 40 minute walk with many splendid views of the coast en route.

On entering Kilderkin you will find a large, entrance hall with cloakroom. To the right is the dual aspect open plan living/dining area and kitchen. Adjacent to the kitchen is a modern utility room. The west facing French windows create a light and airy, yet cosy, sociable space in which to unwind. The windows open into a small walled garden that catches the sun from mid-morning to dusk. Quality teak furniture and a barbeque are provided for relaxation and al fresco dining.

From the hall modern oak railed stairs lead to an impressively large landing. This in turn leads to two double bedrooms (one en-suite) and a very spacious a fully tiled modern family bathroom. Further stairs lead up to a landing and a large twin bedroom. All bedrooms have comfortable mattresses and copious storage space. A travel cot, stair gate and high chair are provided.

The cottage has free internet access, unlimited Wi-Fi and LAN, Smart HDTV, a Blue Ray/DVD player, Netflix etc, digital radio, USB charge points, and connections for your own media. Mobile phone coverage is good.

The property is available for lettings from Saturday to Saturday. Short breaks are available by negotiation, October to March inclusive, subject to a 4 night minimum stay. A dual zone central heating system ensures comfort in the cooler months. All bed linen, hand towels, bath towels, tea towels, dishcloths and bath mats are provided. Please bring bedding for the cot if you have an infant. We operate a strict no smoking policy throughout the house and garden. Sorry, we do not accept pets.

About The Owner

We are John and Liz Wingham. We have lived in the New Forest for over 30 years and we have always said that we would like to retire to Dorset and preferrably to the Isle of Purbeck. We are now retired from paid employment (Liz as a hospitality specialist) but 6 grandchildren keep us employed in other ways! We are still looking for our permanent retirement home but I suspect that Kilderkin Cottage has already crept into our hearts and may be The One! We have three daughters who are all married and have children - four boys and two girls - ranging in age from 14 years to 16 months. Two of the girls live approx 15-30 minutes away from us. The other lives in Surrey.We have had family holidays in Swanage for over 55 years so we know the area extremely well.

Why The Owner chose Purbeck

Kilderkin Cottage is approached by a private lane in the conservation area of Langton Matravers. We first saw the property when it had been reduced to a shell by the developer in September 2014. However, we knew right from the start that it would be the house for us and we enjoyed watching it being transformed into the lovely property that we finally bought in April 2015.The Purbeck stone exterior blends well into the conservation area and the planners insistence that the style of window should be retained has meant that the diamond-paned sash windows have become a real feature. The configuration of the rooms, the high quality of the build, fittings, equipment, etc. are all exactly what we would expect and will ensure that the house will remain " as good as new" for a long time to come. It has also been an excellent opportunity for us to put paint on to the blank canvas that the house presented to us and to make it into our holiday home very quickly. The location of the house meets our and guests' needs for proximity to country walks, beaches, beautiful scenery, church and places of interest. There is a pub and village shop within walking distance and there is a bus service on the main road through the village. Old Malthouse Lane is a quiet backwater serving only 10 houses.It is quiet with only the occasional car or farm vehicle going up or down the road. The house is easy to maintain - apart from the windows which take ages to clean!

The Isle of Purbeck's golf club is among the most spectacular courses in England. Visitors will enjoy splendid views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. The course has consistently been included in Golf World's list of the top 100 in Great Britain.

A Hidden Gem

This is a truly fantastic cottage, tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean with everything you could wish for and more. Langton Matravers is a quiet little village within walking distance of Swanage and the cottage itself is in a quiet private road. All bedrooms are spacious and beautifully decorated with comfortable beds and plenty of storage. This was a trip down memory lane for us. The weather was good for late September and mostly dry so we were able to take advantage of the numerous walks in the area, several from the cottage itself. Great fun. However after full days of long walks and plenty of exercise it was lovely to come back to Kilderkin to relax. There are plenty of village pubs around, we enjoyed meals at The King's Head in the village, Halfway House, near Wareham but our favourite was The Greyhound in Corfe, a little more expensive but delicious food and friendly staff. Many thanks to John and Liz for the welcome pack and the wine which was very much appreciated, but most of all for letting us share your beautiful cottage. We hope to return soon.

Beautiful property perfectly situated for walking from or visiting further by car or bus.

The property is beautifully decorated, comfortable and well maintained with everything you could possibly need and ideally positioned for walking and visiting the wonderful Purbeck countryside. We walked directly from the Property visiting many of our favourite places and taking in the spectacular coastal views, two of our party appreciating the fact they could usually catch a bus back if necessary. Dorchester and several NT properties are within easy driving distance and the village pub and other local eateries are a real bonus. We hope to be back soon.

We visited in October and were a party of five adults but have very fond memories of many holidays in this area with small children. The local beaches at Studland are wonderful for families, Knoll beach in particular has a great NT cafe, clean toilets and activities if wanted and Swanage would also be very convenient. Our children and grandchildren also love Corfe Castle and the steam train.

Immaculate and well equipped property.

The property was clean, well equipped, and comfortable. There were games, toys for children, information on local things to do. it really was like home from home. Basic provisions were provided, never had this before! Lovely!

In a lovely location near to so many places. Beautiful garden for summer evenings. Comfy beds, sofa's and every necessary kitchen utensil for a really lovely stay.

Nice place but be careful - disappointing end to stay

There is no doubt that this is a lovely place to stay and Liz thinks of everything and has been very helpful. We stayed last year and came back for a second holiday which we enjoyed very much. However upon our return we received this email from Liz....'Thank you for leaving the cottage in such a clean and tidy state – our new housekeeper was delighted!

There are just a couple of points about which we are concerned. Firstly, the Dyson vacuum cleaner, which was working well prior to your arrival, was unusable yesterday because it had been used on wet surfaces and was completely blocked by foul-smelling sludge. I have spent most of this morning stripping it down, cleaning it as much as possible and putting it together again. Once the filter is dry, I will try to use it in the hope that I will not have to replace it. Secondly, we found the toilet seats in the family bathroom and the en-suite had come adrift. John managed to refit the one in the en-suite but the one in the family bathroom could not be fitted properly because there was a part missing. We are disappointed that you did not let us know about these issues prior to your departure, if you were aware of them, so that we could have sorted things out in time for our next guests’ arrival. Such a shame! '

Very polite as you can see but this had us very worried as we used a Bosch vacuum and never even had access to this Dyson. We certainly hoovered nothing other than dry carpets and neither did we break any loo seats. Our deposit was returned but this did leave us very upset. I believe it to be a genuine misunderstanding between Liz and her new housekeeper. However, we pride ourselves on leaving everything immaculate. I would be careful to make sure you tell Liz if even the smallest item is broken or not working when you arrive and also there is clearly a lack of communication between Liz and the new cleaner.

We did receive this from Liz after we explained 'We fully accept that you did a superb job in leaving Kilderkin so clean and tidy, for which we are very grateful. Perhaps we over-reacted to the issues we raised, consequently causing you unnecessary angst and that was not our intention. With hindsight, we should have said nothing.' Sadly the 'perhaps' we over-reacted is not an apology as they must know by now that we did not even have access to the said hoover etc and certainly did not damage their toilets. We could not now relax for fear of another misunderstanding so sadly will not return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your observations. Naturally, we are sad that the relationship between us has disintegrated and that you feel so aggrieved. As you know, we work very hard to ensure the highest possible standards of comfort and enjoyment throughout our cottage. To this end, we undertake rigorous checks throughout the building when guests depart and before new guests arrive in order to resolve deficiencies promptly. We also ask guests to help us by letting us know during their stay if they experience any problems with any aspect of the cottage. We are more than happy to visit to carry out minor repairs ourselves or employ relevant tradespeople if necessary. As far as we are concerned, this is all part of the service we offer and the two-way communication we strive to generate. It is apparent that communication was lacking on this occasion which has contributed to the exasperation from which we are all suffering. Communication with our housekeeper is excellent - both orally and by means of detailed cleaning/checking schedules - and we work together as a team during changeover periods. There are always 2 vacuum cleaners available for guests to use. A Dyson is kept in the hall cupboard and a lighter Bosch cordless one in the utility room. Yes, I did try to "soften" the impact of the issues on you (and on us) and I did regret having raised them with you because I do not like confrontation. I am not ashamed of this. However, we believe that happy relationships with our guests should be developed by open, honest and effective communication, some of which should be personal, private and not for public perusal. We are sorry that you will not be returning but we wish you all more happy holidays in the Purbecks.

excellent house with all facilities we were looking for.clean, comfortable,spacious

Very satisfied House with all facilities required for the two couples in our party.

the house was roomy, comfortable, had little extras e.g. wine/drinks fridge, clothes airer,

top upstairs was very roomy as extra room for "children " but we used it as spare space for luggage, clothes hanging facilities etc.

A small note, would have preferred better wine glasses! ( but then we were on holiday and you make use of the facilities on hand )

Garden was nicely presented but may not be quite so user friendly if little children stayed as there are a number of steps up to the grassed area.
