This large house offers comfortable living on a grand scale. The three bedrooms have their own bathrooms and separate toilets. The dining room seats 10. The library leads into a cosy lounge around the open fire and glass doors open onto the terrace which is surrounded by mature bushes and ferns. The garden is a paradise for birds. Situated in the village of Campagne les Hesdin it is convenient for shops and amenities. The surrounding countryside of Le Pays des 7 Vallées is very beautiful. Walking, cycling, cultural activities and fine dining are all on the doorstep.

Disappointing

Thank you for allowing us the use of your house. We did enjoy our stay and were able to visit places not seen before.

The house is well equipped and certainly warm. We found the bathrooms and bedrooms very well appointed and the linen and towels provided were excellent.

However, there is a downside to our visit. My wife has problems with loss of sensation in her feet. (like vertigo). She was not able to access the television "pit" and found the steps to the dining room challenging.

I, personally, did not like the "pit", and would definitely not like to visit with small children; the temptation to jump down is too much. Even our older boys had to be restrained. The entire living area appears to be tired, the insides of the blinds very dirty.

As a family of seven bringing our own provisions we found it difficult to make space in the larder. It seems to be full of the remnants of previous tenants.

The garden is overgrown, and, in fact, I was disappointed upon our arrival to see the state of the exterior. The boys explored the garden in wellies, but none of the adults ventured very far.

I am sorry to give such a negative report, but you did ask!

Owner's Response: Dear Mr Evans. Thank you for your review. I would like to respond to your negative comments. I'm sorry your wife has mobility problems. Perhaps it would have been wiser to enquire about possible obstacles in the house before booking. The sunken area (pit) in front of the fire is a typical feature of the architectural design of the house. It is only 60 cms deep and there are 2 shallow steps for access. Placed above/beside the sunken area (in the main living area) is a big comfortable sofa for anyone with mobility problems.The 4 steps from dining room to living area are shallow and I have had several visitors with mobility issues who have not found them a problem. That you think 'the living area appears tired' is a shock to me. I pride myself in knowing my home is well kept and welcoming. I agree about the outside blinds... they are impossible to clean because they are inaccessible. Rest assured that if they could be cleaned they would be. Of course during the Summer they are not closed but on Winter evenings it is nicer to close them. Therefore I shall install lovely curtains that can be drawn to shut out the blackness of the night. The kitchen 'full of remains of previous tenants' You must mean the stock of spices, oil, vinegar, tea, coffee and sugar that I provide for my guests. There is no larder. The garden was due the Autumn pruning and cleaning. It is a very large area to maintain.(6000 square metres) The upper reaches are not always cut and cleared regularly. We like it this way. Stylish, very comfortable, beautifully equipped, warm and inviting.

A lovely property that felt like home straight away. Vivien is very charming and has a good eye for style and comfort. Loved the James Bond style blinds, the "pit", the fireplace, the 70s style lights and the dining room. Extremely comfortable beds, excellent showers and a plentiful supply of hot water. Great that you don't have to hunt around in towns and villages to do recycling and/or dispose of rubbish. Vivien left us a very nice bottle of wine. The only things lacking were a frying pan and spare light bulbs. Lots of candles everywhere to give subtle and calming lighting. Plentiful supply of foil, cling film, toilet rolls and kitchen rolls. Would we go back? - in a heartbeat. All four of our party loved the property and none of us wanted to return home. Thank you very much, Vivien.

Quiet, private and spacious

We stayed in this property in early August and were extremely impressed at how well the amenities made us feel so comfortable and at home. 3 adults 2 children and our dog managed to get lost in the grounds so easily. The kitchen open plan living room is great for catering and cooking. We had everything we needed. The location of the property is not too far from the main routes. We spent a day and evening in Montreuil managing to catch a light and sound drama event on "Les Miserables" which was amazing! We enjoyed a day trip to Thiepval to see the great memorial and spent many hours on the beach at Merlimont which was only 20 mins drive away and absolutely vast. All visitors must try the wood fired boulangerie in town as it is really different. Supermarket in Beaurainville just 5 mins down the road and so is the vets who were brilliant. If you can, spend some time walking in the forest near Hesdin. It was absolutely huge but incredibly relaxing. Vivien gave us such a warm welcome and we will definitely return one day.

Fantastic memories made in amazing house

We had a fantastic week at campagne les hesdins. The house was extremely comfortable and well stocked. The English TV meant my son could watch the Olympics! They had great fun building dens in the amazing garden. We experienced fantastic beaches and historical attractions. Thankyou Vivian I wish we could have stayed longer!

Lovely house, fully equipped, and close to village

We were four generations, with my mother and my niece and her baby daughter all on holiday together (plus two husbands), so we loved the three bedrooms all having en suite bathrooms. The house was big and very well equipped. We particularly liked being so close to the village, with a supermarket, bakery, bistro and tabac all in walking distance.

We arrived much later than planned because of delays getting our rental car at CDG. Vivien was great; not only was she very understanding at having to wait for us, she actually went out to buy supplies and prepared a lovely dinner.

Great house, very comfortable and good location

We loved our stay at this house, which is very comfortable and well-organised, with big well-lit rooms. We particularly liked the large dining room and lounge area, which have huge sliding glass doors, which are like garden rooms, even when the weather is inclement. Also, the lounge has better sofas than in the photos, which were very comfortable and the kitchen was well-equipped. There were 5 of us in the group, plus a young baby and a large English Setter dog, and the sleeping/living arrangements worked well for us all, giving my daughter, partner and their new baby enough space for their first holiday as a family. Also, the sound proofing was very good. The house is a 10 minute walk from the centre of Campagne-lès-Hesdin, so we enjoyed walking to one of the two boulangeries each morning for bread and croissants, and there is a supermarket, pharmacy etc. There are great places to visit, and locally nice walks and runs. Vivien was there to welcome us when we arrived, and gave us a very friendly introduction to the house, and was then on her way, and arranged for us to return the keys to the housekeeper when we left.

  • Roc à l'eau is the ideal destination for a group of friends or family wanting comfortable, luxurious accomodation in the beautiful region of Pas de Calais. The house is very spacious, situated in a huge garden, so even though you are in the middle of a big village with all amenities on the doorstep (baker, supermarket, bank, chemist) you feel very 'far away from it all'.
