About the property

4 Coastguard Cottage, Helford Passage. Sleeps 6. On river. Use of outdoor pool.

The Coast Guard Cottages at Helford Passage were built around 1850 and, as the name suggests, belonged to the Coastguard Service who formed in 1822 to try and prevent smuggling.

Number 4 belonged to the ship's skipper. It has been lovingly renovated to add modern features, yet retain the cottage's original charm. Decorated with whitewashed walls and clean lines, there is a light, spacious feel throughout. Warm fabrics add the luxurious touch, and the artwork comes from local artists.

On the ground floor, the open-plan living room, with two comfy sofas, opens into the kitchen, which is so well-equipped, there is even a built-in wine chiller. The breakfast bar is perfect for an early morning coffee, or chatting to the chef whilst lunch is being prepared. You'll find a separate den, ideal for the children, with its large sofa, beanbags and small television. There is a downstairs bathroom with a walk-in shower cubicle as part of the modern, bathroom suite.

The dining area is at the front of the property. A butterfly table opens up for extended suppers or a family game of Scrabble, and closes down again, maximising the space in the window alcove, where there is a wonderful seating area with plenty of colourful scatter cushions - an idyllic space for curling up with a hot coffee and a good book.

Upstairs, you'll find a double room, with a king-size bed and stunning views of the river. There are built-in wardrobes and cupboards which provide plenty of storage space. The second bedroom is a twin room, and the third houses a set of sturdy bunks. There is hanging and cupboard space in both. The family bathroom has a bath and overhead electric shower to suit everybody's needs. Both bathrooms have heated towel rails to keep the family's towels warm and dry.

You'll find a private patio outside, overlooking the river, with wooden garden furniture and a huge parasol - a perfect spot to bask in the sunshine, or chill in the shade with a glass of something cold.Number 4 has underfloor heating on the ground floor and storage heaters upstairs.

We'll have a welcome pack of Smugglers tea, Taylors coffee, milk, Cornish biscuits and a bottle of wine ready for your arrival. There is a returnable £200 deposit against damages on this property.

Feedback on 4 Coartguard Cottage

  • 4 of 5

The change in car parking arrangements this year were an issue! Whilst we understand the reason for change we can't understand why an extra charge cannot be made for use of a vacant space, in the lower carpark, subject to agreement with willing owners. This charge, minus an administration fee, could be forwarded to the carpark space owners probably at a profit! Whilst I am still fit enough to make the 'trek' to the top carpark I think that other older visitors will be deterred from rebooking this cottage.

For a seasoned coffee drinker the lack of a caffeine in the property was a serious oversight! We appreciated the staff providing an awesome replacement contraption but think a new cafetière for the cottage needs to be purchased!

We would recommend this cottage to others but only with warnings about the carparking. (see below)

Owner's Response: Thanks, Sue, for taking the time to write a review - we appreciate your feedback. The two coastguard cottages have never had allocated parking spaces but we've always tried to offer free ones to those guests. It's no longer possible to do this, I'm afraid, and that's out of our control. Regarding the cafetiere, I will certainly pass those comments across to the owner. We look forward to welcoming you back in June! With warm wishes from the team at Holiday Cornwall.

Activity and Interests

Helford Passage is about a mile from the village of Mawnan Smith. It's on the river - the Helford, of course, with a lovely sandy beach, and direct access onto the coastal path. We've got the Ferryboat Inn on site, which specialises in local seafood dishes and exquisite hot chocolates with Baileys Cream. It hosts regular music nights, quizzes and other events during the year, including the Helford Passage Regatta in early August.

You could hire a rowing boat or kayak for the day at the Helford Passage kiosk, or book some paddle boarding lessons. If, like me, you're a lazy sun-worshipper, then stretch out on the beach with the latest blockbuster and a locally made Roskilly's Chocolate Brownie and Marshmallow ice cream, or a bag of warm, buttery popcorn. Browse through Sarah's Shop @ the Beach, for locally made jewellery, quirky gifts, and the children's all-essential, beach-side bucket and spades.

We've got an outdoor, heated swimming pool on site too, with poolside loungers chairs and parasols. It's in a secure area behind a coded gate, so it's safe for the little ones.

From the kiosk, you can catch the foot ferry across to Helford Village, meander up the leafy path to the Shipwrights Arms and enjoy a homemade pasty and a glass of cold, Cornish cider. If you fancy something a little more energetic, you could wander along the river shore and explore Daphne Du Maurier's Frenchman's Creek. The ferry runs into the evening during the season so there's no rush back - take your time, relax and enjoy.
