Ideal base for exploring Granada, the Costa Tropical and the Alpujarras.
The house was derelict but has been rebuilt in the traditional style with wooden beams, tiled floors and shutters. Melegis is off the tourist track and a traditional Spanish village. It is situated just above the church and near to Restaurante Los Naranjos (the orange trees) where there is free WiFi. There is on other bar/restaurant, one general store and a bakery. Talara, 5 minutes drive away, has a collection of shops to cover all your needs including English papers & WiFi at Bar Finity
Book ahead on-line for Alhambra tickets and choose early slots during the summer months.

Lovely property in the perfect location
Thank you so much for writing your review. It is much appreciated. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay in Casa Veleta and I have translated your comment about Yamina and forwarded it to her.
About the Owner
Michael & I met at Guy's Hospital Dental School. In 1969 we went to South Africa with our two young sons. We returned in 1977 and settled in Chiddingfold, Surrey.
We enjoy travelling which is just as well because we have one son living in Sydney, another in Boston so we are fortunate that our third son has now moved only a few miles from us. We have 6 grandchildren and enjoy gardening, tennis and the theatre.

Lovely property in the perfect location
We have stayed in the Lecrin Valley numerous times and found this house to be well appointed and perfect for our needs. Yamina the next door neighbour was lovely and even brought us some home made delicacies! The location is great for local bars, resteraunts and walks and well placed to visit the mountains, beaches and of course the beautiful city of Granada.
Nice relaxing place
I certainly concur with the other review concerning the house (lovely plus great views), the village and surrounding area.
We were there in late April and after we had finished eating each evening we just sat around the BBQ (for the residual heat) drinking and chatting (hope we didn’t upset any of the neighbours with the occasional howl of laughter!).
It was amazing (even at that time of year) as to how much fruit was on the trees – the oranges were so sweet. And the lemons came in useful for the drinks :-)
Concerning visiting the Alhambra – book as early as you can because even in the last week of April it was fully booked up (I checked a week or so before we flew out) and also this was the case well into May as well.
A word of warning driving through the back streets of some towns / villages because we got caught out a couple of times where the “road” just got narrower and narrower and it got very tight especially when we had to turn a corner (I’ve got the dash cam footage to prove it!). Nearby Chite was a classic example – we would recommend parking up at the start of the village and walking around rather than chancing it and potentially getting “stuck” or damaging your car. The marks on the walls in places were proof as to some unfortunate encounters...
The house I would also certainly recommend.
A beautiful house in a perfect location
What a lovely house. The photos of the property are good but it feels more spacious with the open plan kitchen, dining and living area, and a wonderful roof terrace with superb views all around.
The village is a classic small Spanish village with only a few tourists. The locals are often out and about and are very friendly. The location is superb - 20 minutes to Granada, 30 minutes to the beach. Los Alpujarras nearby with the towns of Llanjaron and Orgiva. Pampaneira and Capileira are a must visit. Salobrena is a wonderful beach town with great bars, in particular Resaurante El Penon - gorgeous food and excellent service.
The large supermarket at Durcal is only 10 minutes away and you can get pretty much everything there - though a visit to the market on the edge of Durcal on a Wednesday is to be recommended.
There are lovely walks locally and further afield. Basically you can't better the location if you are wanting to explore the area.
The house was very clean and tidy and has an excellent wood burning stove - we were there in April and the nights were a bit chilly.
Our next door neighbour, who looked after the house, was friendly, positive and crucially didn't speak Spanish too quickly! She even brought us in some fabulous tartes one day! What a star.
There are 2 restaurants in the village, though we only visited Los Naranjos - very well named as the region is prolific with oranges. In fact oranges and lemons abound everywhere you go - pick one off a tree and try it. Extraordinary. The restaurant was good and relaxed - and had wifi (which the house doesn't have). I guess that would be the only thing I would change as wifi is very useful for exploring the area and planning what to do - also for booking the Alhambra online.
All in all, a superb village house which I would thoroughly recommend.
From the Owner
“Andalucia is a strange mix of traditional Spain with overtones of Moorish influence which makes it feel quite exotic. Village life in Melegis is slow making it a perfect place to unwind. It is always a joy to walk surrounded by such stunning scenery whether it is through the orange and olive groves above the village or down to the lake. The people are very friendly and will always greet you as you ass by - even the children. The unspoilt coastal town of Salobrena is only 30 minutes away. There is a bakery, grocery store and two restaurants all within easy walking distance.”

From the Owner
“The house is "L" shaped which adds to its character. It is an upside down house with wonderful views from the top terrace. The bedrooms are on the ground floor so they remain cool in summer. The first floor area is open planned making the most of the space for the sitting, dining and kitchen. The main road through the village skirts the centre so there is very little traffic passing the house.”
