1 Bed Cottage With Roof Terrace, South Of Mirepoix And Carcassonne

Updated: 12-Jun-2016

La Cachette - which means the hideout - is a perfect place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life! Nestled in a pretty French village in the foothills of the Pyrenees, and sleeping just two, offers a chance for you to unwind and reconnect with the simple pleasures of life.

The cottage has been recently renovated and is arranged on three levels. On the ground floor there is a bright and comfortable open plan kitchen/ dining and living area. The kitchen is fully equipped with induction hob, electric oven and hood, kettle, toaster, cafétière and all the cups, glasses, crockery and cutlery you might need, and a set of picnic plates, cups and cutlery for you to borrow whilst exploring the area. There is also a washing machine. We provide a welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk, sugar and a bottle of wine for you to enjoy on your first night.

The living room features a comfortable L-shaped sofa, a selection of books and magazines about the region and a folder of useful local information such as places to go, things to see, restaurants and so on. There is also a CD player and selection of CDs and a Bluetooth speaker. Please note, that La Cachette is intentionally low-tech: there is no TV or Internet (we can direct you to Internet cafés nearby if you need to get online.)

On the first floor you will find the beautifully decorated bedroom, with double bed (fresh linen and towels included, of course) and a little sitting area for you to relax in with a favourite book. The bedroom also has a handsome antique chest of drawers, and an in-built wardrobe; an iron and ironing board are at your disposition. Also on the first floor is the en-suite shower room, with shower, sink, WC, and a hairdryer.

Then head up to the second floor for the best part: a stunning walled roof terrace bursting with potted plants and flowers. Two sunloungers make the ideal spot for an afternoon nap, and a couple of chairs and small table are just the thing for sipping a glass of chilled wine under the stars.

When you're ready to leave all the relaxing at La Cachette behind, the local area is waiting for you to discover and enjoy. La Cachette is located in the picturesque village of Rivel which is about an hour south of Carcassonne. Deep in the heartlands of the Quercorb area with the magnificent Pyrenees providing a constant backdrop, the best of the South of France is right here.

Highlights include the stunning ruins of Cathar fortresses; artisan markets where you can sample local produce; many walking trails from gentle country strolls to more challenging hikes; mountain biking and road cycling; swimming in lakes; and discovering regional wines and craft beers.

When you arrive at La Cachette you will find a folder stuffed with information about places to see, things to do, restaurants and so on. We're also on hand - next door - to answer any questions and help in any way we can.

Please note: La Cachette is not suitable for guests with mobility concerns, and we are unable to accommodate children or pets.

A car is essential for getting to La Cachette and exploring the surrounding area. The nearest airport for international flights is Carcassonne (55km), followed by Perpignan (98km) and Toulouse (116km). Car rental firms are available at all of these airports.

Excellent séjour

Nous avons passé un très agréable séjour dans la maison de Madame Sanford. Nous avons été très bien accueilli par une dame fort aimable. Le logement était très propre. À recommander.

La cachette, un petit coin de paradis

  • 5 of 5

lovely house in a peaceful village

The kitchen/diner and bedroom were lovely, but the best feature was the roof terrace, with a gorgeous view of the stars and brilliant for relaxing in the evening with a glass of wine.

The nearby small town of Chalabre which is 5km away is where you will find most of the main everyday amenities you’ll need including Internet cafés, grocers, bakers, butchers, pharmacy and ATM/bank. Within half an hour there are several larger towns with more shopping options, such as supermarkets. There are also a number of morning and evening artisan markets in the surrounding towns and villages where you will find delicious local produce.

Home of the Cathar believers, the valleys surrounding Rivel boast a rich historical heritage. Within an hour you can visit the incredible ruins of Montségur, Roquefixade, Puivert and Puilaurens, and explore the restored medieval Cité at Carcassonne, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The stunning countryside around Rivel is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities – here’s a list of just a few possibilities: swimming in lakes at Puivert and Montbel; walking and hiking; treetop adventure parks; mountain and road biking; horse riding; white water rafting and gliding. Please let us know ahead of your visit if there is anything we can do to help you organise activities above (we can help with hiring bikes, and we have walking maps and swimming towels that you can borrow).

And last, but not least (!) whether you want something simple to eat, like a delicious savoury crepe, or something a little more refined for a celebratory night out, there is something to suit most palates here, and we can advise you on restaurants/ cafés and bistros nearby. The area is also well-known for producing some excellent wines, in particular the Blanquette de Limoux which is our local sparkling wine. We have a list of wineries that you can visit for tastings; and there is also a new up and coming brewery nearby for lovers of fine craft beers.
