About the property

THE HOUSE Le Bercail is an eighteenth century farmhouse in the hamlet of Les Clozeaux, a couple of kilometers northest of the village of Mainsat. Les Clozeaux lies in the Department of the Creuse (Limousin), among the foothills of the Massif Central.

The house, which sleeps 6-8 people, boasts original oak beams and granit stones, along with all modern conveniences. The local area offers spectacular mountains, ancient chateaux, excellent markets, brocantes, fishing, pony trekking and wild swimming. You can walk straight from the front door into oak forests, lakes and pretty stone villages. The deserted country roads are ideal for cycling and one of the barns has a cycle rack for four bikes.

At Le Bercail, you'll find in the garden a wooden table seating 4-6 with plenty of seating and cushions, a full size trampoline, a barbecue and plenty of sun loungers. In the adjacent barn is a table tennis table, inflatable canoe and dinghy and miscellaneous garden games.

Les Clozeaux is approximately 675km, or seven or eight hours' drive time, from the port of Calais. Peage on the motorway costs around 45 euros. Rental costs just £350 per week October - May or £500 June - September.

On the ground floor is a kitchen/diner with electric cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer and dishwasher. Guest visiting in cooler weather can also take advantage of the efficient wood- burning stove. Through a separate front door is access to a utility room with washing machine, toilet and hand basin.

Up on the first floor you'll find a spacious lounge with easy chairs, a small table and a double sofa bed. A huge open fireplace can be fed during the winter months from the garden's abundant wood store.

Adjacent to the lounge is the master bedroom, lit by two south facing windows, through one of which you can access the sunny balcony. This quiet, private master suite, with discrete reading nook, also enjoys an en-suite bathroom with a shower and bidet.

On the top floor is a double bedroom, with two single beds, an en-suite bathroom and separate loo. Also on the top floor is a charming children's bedroom with 3 single beds. Children will find a variety of toys and games and guests may also use the travel cot provided if traveling with a baby. Please note that children's access to the bathroom is via the double bedroom, so the top floor is best occupied by a single family.

Le Bercail is heated throughout by electric convector heaters, though guests are welcome to use the open fire and wood-burner. Duvets of various weights, and English pillows, are provided by the owners, but since Di and Barrie are not resident at Le Bercail, visitors need to bring their own bedlinen and towels.

Summer guests will find that much of their time is spent in the south facing garden, relaxing.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO In the picturesque nearby village of Mainsat is a convenience store, a boulangerie, a pharmacy and an auberge and a themed outdoor market, once a month. The nearest supermarket is in the small town of Auzances, about 6 km away, where there is a weekly open air market and many other independent stores.

The Creuse is known as the 'pays des mille et un etangs', or 'land of a thousand and one lakes'. Even the hamlet of Les Clozeaux has its own little etang - great for messing about on a dinghy or just sitting and fishing. Guests visiting in the summer will enjoy the swimming lake 'La Naute', about fifteen minutes drive away, which has a children's play area and an excellent cafe/bistro and regular live music concerts throughout the summer. Further afield, at 'Lac de Vassiviere', there's great kayaking, fishing, parcours, mountain biking, a sculpture park and even a skate park!

The area's biggest attraction, about an hour away by car, is 'Parc des Volcanes', in which you'll find the world famous Puy de Dome - a spectacular extinct volcano with the remains of a Roman temple at the summit. You can reach the top on foot or via new funicular railway. The high -tech theme park, 'Volcania' features rides, games and 5D films.

The area is rich in chateaux, notably at Villemonteix near Chenerailles, and at Boussac to the north.

The pretty , historic town of Aubusson, around 40 minutes' drive south, is recognised by UNESCO as the world center of tapestry making, and visitors will find many galleries and museums celebrating the craft.

The region is steeped in the ancient past, rich in medieval history; Gallo-Roman remains are common and there are many prehistoric standing stone sites. You'll discover beautiful Romanesque churches at Chambon-sur -Voueize, Evaux-les -Bains, Chenerailles and Marcillat.

Walkers and nature lovers will find much to enchant in the Creuse's many sites of natural beauty, including the gigantic granite 'Pierres-Jaumatres' and the boulder strewn 'Rigole du Diable'
