Overview

About the property

Middle Stone Farm holiday cottage in rural Somerset, sleeps 4, ground floor.

The Stable Cottage at Middle Stone Farm has high beamed ceilings and a stone floor with rugs, there is central heating, hot water and a log burning stove. The cottage is on the ground level, useful for families or anyone with limited mobility. It has an open plan living room and kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, oven etc. There is a modern spacious shower room in the middle of the property. Outside is an eating area with table & chairs, a bbq in the summer and there's a hot tub for hire too.

There is a washing machine available guests staying a week or more, if you are staying for less time we offer a service laundry wash.

Bed linen and towels are included along with washing up liquid, tea & coffee making basics and bathroom soap. If you're heading to the beach please bring your own swimming towels. We provide a complimentary starter box of logs, kindling and firelighers for the wood burning stove. If you require more logs we can sell firewood to you for £5 a box of logs and kindling. Heating and electricity is included in your stay, there are radiators in every room and you have control of the heating thermostat.

We are a no smoking farm, smoking is not allowed in the cottage or near any of our buildings or hot tub. If you wish to smoke we politely ask that you go up the drive to do so please.

Check in is from 4pm and check out by 10.00am on day of departure please.

We are very well placed for Exmoor National Park, it is only 3 miles up the road. The Quantock Hills are 20 minutes away. Taunton and M5 are 25 minutes away. The coast is 25 minutes away, Kilve is famous for fossil hunting and Blue Anchor is nice with a good cafe (The Driftwood). Dunster is a lovely historic village with a famous National Trust castle. Definitely visit Bossington Beach, Porlock Weir, Lynton & Lynmouth, Watersmeet, Tarr Steps and Dulverton! Good pubs to check out are The Notley Arms, Monksilver, The Rock at Watterow (not so child friendly), Rising Sun West Bagborough, The Bear in Wiveliscombe is good if you're on a budget. There are more eateries on our website.

We also have a glamping site on our farm with three luxury safari tents and a wooden cabin, you can't see the tents from the cottage. There is a little playground on the farm and some mini ride on tractors for toddlers. We also have a farm shop which is open to our guests from March to October.

WiFi is provided although it is not very fast as it's very rural here.

Brompton Ralph is our nearest village, 1 mile from our farm. It is a very rural community with a shop which opens for a few hours every morning and there are beautiful walks all around. You will find The Co Op supermarket in Wiveliscombe which is a 8 minute drive from here, there are also pubs, a good butcher, a few takeaways etc. We really recommend Exmoor, there is so much to see and do there and it is 3 miles from here.

There is a hot tub for hire on the cottage terrace, it's wood fired and there's a store of logs for you to fuel it yourselves. This is an extra, please contact us for a quote if you wish to use it whilst you're staying here. You'll find more details about the cottage and hot tub on our website if you look up Middle Stone Farm.

We accept 1 well behaved dog for a £25 fee, if you are thinking of bringing a dog, please make sure it is well behaved, wormed & healthy without any skin conditions. We do not allow dogs on beds or sofas and we ask if you're going out for the day you please take your dog with you too. Please don't leave it alone in the cottage. Your dog will need to be on a lead at our farm as there are two farm dogs here, free ranging chickens, lambs and piglets in the spring and visiting children around. Please pick up anything your dog does and throw it in the black bins in the yard. We can lend you some poop bags if you forget to bring them, along with a couple of dog bowls and some fleeces.

If you have any questions with regard to our accommodation and farm, please do get in touch, we are happy to help.

About Catherine Heard

We live at Middle Stone Farm and run a holiday business here. We have a glamping site (not visible from the cottage), there is also a cabin on our farm and little shop open during the warm months. We have two dogs, lots of chickens, geese, alpaca, sheep, goats and pigs. If you visit in the summer there are house martins nesting under the cottage roof and in the winter we have a barn owl. Whilst our guests enjoy their holiday we are busy working around the farm. There's usually a project going on here!

Catherine Heard purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Catherine Heard chose Taunton

We are surrounded by wildlife and deep in the West Somerset countryside. Exmoor has stunning scenery to walk, cycle or drive through. This area of Somerset is relatively undiscovered so it's quieter on our roads than it is in some of the South West. Taunton is only 25 minutes away if you need to go into a town. We are well placed for visiting Dunster Castle, the West Somerset Railway, the North Devon coast. The nearest beach is Kilve or Blue Anchor about 25 minutes from here.

What makes this cottage unique

If you're looking to escape the city and breath lots of fresh country air, this is hopefully the place for you!

In the summer holidays there are usually quite a lot of people and children around if you're coming with children who want to socialise! There is a little playground on the farm for small children.

If you have any questions do please get in touch, you'll find lots of information about Middle Stone Farm on the internet and on review sites.

Cosy, clean and calm! We loved our stay.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful break staying over New Year with our grown-up sons. The cottage was snug and clean, thanks to the owners for the extra touches like mince pies and hot water bottles, Great walking country within easy reach! The Notley Arms at Monksilver serves really good food, and looks after the gluten-free too - very friendly.

Perfect getaway, we would love to go back!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely perfect weekend. Arrived to a warm cottage with the fire already lit. The place had everything you need, and there were even mince pies and milk/tea/coffee. The cottage is surrounded by beautiful countryside and Catherine even arranged freshly baked scones and a cottage pie for our dinner. We really would love to come back here, it's the perfect countryside getaway if you're looking for relaxation. Plenty of walks and things to do locally, we just wish we had stayed longer!

Homely Comforts

  • 5 of 5

Catherine was warm and welcoming, as was her farm cottage. My wife, sister and I stayed at Brompton Ralph in late September. Having two full sized bedrooms at either end of the cottage was wonderful. Even though there was only one bathroom, it was HUGE and more than adequate for the three of us. Because of its location in the heart of the countryside, we did not venture out for dinner at night, but cooked for ourselves in the extremely well equipped kitchen. We had envisaged eating in and had brought provisions with us; however, Catherine advised us on arrival that there was a farm shop located about 100 yards from the cottage where most foodstuffs and other essentials could be purchased. We only stayed 2 nights, but the place was so comfortable and the peace and quiet so relaxing that we could have stayed longer. I would highly recommend Catherine's place to anyone with young children, as there are various animals to see including alpacas, pigs, ducks, chickens and geese, not to mention Molly the dog - all very entertaining.

The perfect family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had such a magical time at Middle Stone Farm. Catherine and Patrick were the perfect hosts and the facilities on-site were brilliant. Our toddler had the time of his life feeding the goats, playing in the play field and generally roaming around. The honesty shop was a massive bonus and came in so handy, and the cottage we stayed in was perfectly appointed. The location was remote but well connected for plenty of local and further flung adventures - Tarr Steps and Dunster Castle both highly recommended. We'll definitely be back!

Beautiful scenery, friendly hosts

  • 5 of 5

The farm is located far from the maddening crowds. The cottage has everything you will ever need and there is even a farm shop if you are running out of something or want fresh croissants in the morning. We and especially our kids liked it.

We are surrounded by wonderful green rolling hills and farmland. We are very rural although Wiveliscombe is 3 miles away for small shops. There are lovely walks and pubs with good food nearby. Exmoor National Park is 10 minutes away and the Quantock Hills are 15 minutes. Kilve on the north coast is great for fossil hunting and the North Devon coast is nearby. The West Somerset Historic steam railway is near here and very popular. Lovely Dunster Castle (National Trust) is 20 minutes drive towards Minehead and great for children. You can reach the south Devon beaches in under an hour.

No smoking anywhere on our premises please. If you wish to smoke we politely ask that you walk up the drive away from the buildings.
It's very rural here, the cottage isn't suitable for late night noisy parties as the sound can travel to our neighbours.
Please check out at 10am so we have time to clean and make the property ready for our next guests, thank you.
If you wish to bring a dog please contact me first as we only allow dog stays at certain times of the year and we do have a few dog rules too. Thank you.
The hot tub is an extra, it costs £50 if you are staying for a weekend, £70 for a four night stay and £100 for a week. Please note it is a wood fired hot tub, you operate it and we provide the tub with fresh water and a store full of firewood to heat it.

You can find out lots more about us on our website for Middle Stone Farm, www.middlestonefarm.com
