Our converted 4-bedroom farmhouse is the perfect choice for family holidays, friends sharing or couples wanting to get away from it all. It is spacious, lovingly converted and has masses of rural French charm and all modern comforts. The private, south-west facing sunny garden has a shady eating area under an ancient lime tree, where you can enjoy the wide unspoiled views of the lovely Dordogne countryside. It is only 5 minutes from the nearest village with a baker's and bar/restaurant, and under 10 minutes from Ribérac with its famous weekly market and wide range of shops, restaurants, sports and cultural facilities.

The house has large rooms with original stone walls, fireplaces and solid timber beams. Downstairs is a large lounge, smaller second sitting room, spacious farmhouse dining kitchen and separate utility room, and cloakroom.

Upstairs are four bedrooms (one with a large king-sized bed, one with a double four-poster, one double room and one twin room opening off the main bedroom, which is ideal for children). There is a family bathroom with bath and separate shower, plus an en suite shower room in the double bedroom.

The garden is entirely private. It is flat, mainly grass and on two levels separated by 4 stone steps. A path leads from the garden downhill to a "wilderness" area with a trampoline that is always popular with younger visitors.

Nearby attractions include Aubeterre (officially one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France) which is 20 minutes away. Brantome is 40 minutes away and known as the “Venice of the Dordogne”. Périgueux is a lovely medieval town with narrow streets and a cathedral, and is also 40 minutes away. St. Emilion is an outstandingly beautiful town in its own wine growing region, and is a UNESCO world heritage site; it is just over an hour away. Bordeaux is 90 minutes’ drive, and is a lovely city with great shops and stunning riverside architecture, and also a UNESCO heritage site. If you go a little further afield there are lots of cultural offerings to be explored, ranging from fabulous castles and gardens, to prehistoric caves with wall paintings and stalactites, all within an hour or two's drive.

I'm a freelance translator and bought the house to give my two daughters an opportunity of living in France for a few years. We now live in a lovely Regency town in England, but return to our house in France as often as we can to enjoy the beautiful scenery and a different pace of life.

We spent several holidays driving progressively further south looking for a spot we wanted to live in. We arrived in Ribérac on a wet February night and decided it was where we wanted to be.

The house was the last one on a long list of houses that we viewed. We simply fell for the whole thing - the quirkiness of the house, the timeless character and the lovely rolling countryside. I've done a lot of work to modernise the house but always with an eye on keeping its totally unique feel.
