Top Traveller Review

About the Owner

I grew up in Yorkshire England and I am a retired Travel Agent and Mountain leader. Our passion for the Lake district lead us to purchase this cosy cottage conveniently located in the Western fells of the English Lake district. I am retired and have been a walk and klettersteig leader in the Austrian Alps. I was previously a Travel Agent in England.

I have a passion for the Mountains -walking climbing and skiing. My other interests include sailing and I have been a Christian for 15 years.

My wife Lesley is a retired hotelier and she ran her own hotel in the city of York England.

Our cottage in Great Broughton near Cockermouth is in an ideal location for both the lakes and the seaside. The less visited western fells are easily accessible from the cottage along with the towns of Cockermouth and Keswick.

A warm welcome in a cold November - The Manse, Great Broughton

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at The Manse. The cottage was really cosy, well equipped and comfortable; it felt like staying in the home of a friend, rather than in a holiday let. We had the luxury of there being just the two of us but there’s plenty of room for 4.

The arrival instructions, equipment instructions and information book for local services were extremely helpful and very clear.

We’d read a review saying it’s a bit out of the way; we found that to be part of the charm. Being “just outside” the national park means it’s a little bit quieter than some places but, with the A66 just down the road, everything is easily reached.

Thanks to Robert and Lesley for letting us share your holiday home – we’ll certainly be looking to do so again.

small cosy comfortable well equipped cottage

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a slick kitchen and designer bathrooms then maybe this cottage isn't for you.But if you want a cosy comfortable well equipped home- from-home in a good location for the NW Lakes, then go for it. We really appreciated the gas fire which warmed the place up beautifully, the cotton bedding, quality towels and good cooking facilites. The knives were sharp -always a good sign! And the Explorer maps were useful. Thank you.

Exceeded our expectations

  • 5 of 5

Cottage was very easy to find and just a short drive from Cockermouth. A perfect base to explore the west Lakes from.

Inside it had everything you would need its was comfortable, warm and very clean . Kitchen was very well equipped

The Double bed was very comfortable, can't comment on the two singles as didn't use them ,

The stairs are a little steep but no problem if you don't have mobility problems .

The floor in the second bedroom was a bit rickety ,probably needs a couple of floor boards replacing ,but the decor was pleasant through out

We had three lovely days at the cottage and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others

Thank you Robert and Lesley

"Just Lovely"

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was absolutely perfect, great location and very homely. The owners have provided all the finishing touches you could wish for and the facilities in the village were great. There are a few friendly pubs, a hotel in walking distance which we ate at (again lovely) and a well stocked shop and bakery. Cockermouth is a few minutes drive away and has everything you need to provide for your stay. This part of the lakes has the dramatic scenery and is not as over-crowded as Windermere ect. I could not recommend this cottage higher, you should definitely stay here. Thanks for the welcome break and we'd love to return soon. Thank you.

Warm and cozy!

  • 5 of 5

The Manse Cottage was wonderful! It's small but was perfect for our needs; it was clean and ready for us, and had everything we needed. The gas fireplace was delightful. It's in a quaint little town (I recommend visiting the Punch Bowl pub across the street--a true, community pub experience, where the locals gather for conversation and a pint). The house and town are convenient to walks in the countryside; it's not far from great shopping in nearby Cockermouth, and is also a great location for launching excursions into the Lake District. Next time we're in the area, the Manse Cottage is hands down our first choice!

The property is beautifully maintained and located close to the market towns of Cockermouth and Keswick with all there attractions. As well as all the usual sports and outdoor activities, there is the added attraction of the beaches on the Solway firth. The Cumbria region

The Lake District national park is the UK's number 1 destination and its beauty is quite unique and cannot be compared. Every outdoor activity is catered for. The main interests are - bird watching, fishing (rivers and sea), golf, climbing, via ferrata, walking, gill scrambling, canoeing, boat trips, cycling and mountain biking. The tranquillity of the Western fells which are nearby lead you to the spectacularly beautiful lakes of Buttermere, Crummock water, Wastwater and Ennerdale water are all within reach by car touring and there are endless picnic sites. For the sporty the summit of England's highest mountain Scafell Pike is achievable and for the fell top bagger - the wainwrights will beckon. Lake side walks and boat trips are justly popular on nearby Derwentwater.

The village of Great Broughton is located on the river Derwent that flows from Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite lakes. The cottage is ideally located equally close to both the seaside (The Solway firth) and is in the Northern Lake District and Western fells. The village has a post office/ general store and has 3 pubs and a restaurant for bar meals at the Broughton Craggs Hotel . The beautiful lakes of Bassenthwaite, Buttermere, Crummock water, Derwentwater and Wastwater are easily accessible. Swimming and beaches are possible in the lakes and the seaside town of Allonby ( 20 minutes). The mountains of Skiddaw, Grasmoor, Haystacks and Scafell in the western fells are wonderful days out for walkers and mountaineers. The town of Cockermouth is nearby and is the home of Wordsworth house, Jennings brewery, boutique shops and restaurants. Keswick is a short 20 minute drive and this has market days (Thursday and Saturday), lake boating, the Pencil museum, swimming pool, Theatre by the lake, cinema and many thriving restaurants and shops. The Whinlatter centre is close by and features café, bike hire, high ropes course, mountain bike trails and a live video camera in the Osprey nest (May to September)
