About Robert Lockwood

I grew up in Yorkshire England and I am a retired Travel Agent and Mountain leader. Our passion for the Lake district lead us to purchase this cosy cottage conveniently located in the Western fells of the English Lake district. I am retired and have been a walk and klettersteig leader in the Austrian Alps. I was previously a Travel Agent in England.

I have a passion for the Mountains -walking climbing and skiing. My other interests include sailing and I have been a Christian for 15 years.

My wife Lesley is a retired hotelier and she ran her own hotel in the city of York England.

Our cottage in Great Broughton near Cockermouth is in an ideal location for both the lakes and the seaside. The less visited western fells are easily accessible from the cottage along with the towns of Cockermouth and Keswick.

Why Robert Lockwood chose Great Broughton

The property is beautifully maintained and located close to the market towns of Cockermouth and Keswick with all there attractions. As well as all the usual sports and outdoor activities, there is the added attraction of the beaches on the Solway firth. Theatre, restaurants and shopping are close by and our village has its own post office and general store.

What makes this cottage unique

The ease of access to the less visited western fells and lakes makes this an ideal base for touring this beautiful part of the lakes.

Lovely little cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We booked The Manse for a 3 night stay, we were very impressed, a real home away from home with every amenity you could want!

Great Broughton is a nice little village, the Punch Bowl is a little Gem of a pub.

Very easy access to explore the local area.

Very cosy cottage indeed!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here from 22nd to 29th July. Really cosy cottage. It was ideally situated for most of the places we wanted to visit. A comfortable bed, great selection of DVDs CDs and books to entertain and a lovely warm fire on the last few days when it got a bit chilly. It was also nice that things worked (ie Broadband) and there were plenty of utensils. Will recommend.

Only down side was trying to get the car out on to the road with selfish drivers going too fast in the village. You cannot see with the wall and I had to get my wife out in the road to guide me out.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments Alan we really do appreciate you taking the time to review us. We find great encouragement from this, but also it gives us opportunity to improve. The blind spot coming out from the parking place is an issue and we usually get some one to guide us out. They are supposed to have imposed a lower speed limit in the village- so we will be in touch with the council to see it is imposed. We hope to see you again back soon at the Manse Cottage. Best wishes, Robert and Lesley

Cosy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

An excellent holiday cottage. We were there for five days including Christmas. Even the one wet and windy day was made enjoyable in this well-prepared and cosy cottage. Christmas decorations were up already! Directions to the property were accurate and there was already some heating on. There was plenty of information in the cottage about the facilities provided and possible attractions in the area. A prior exchange of emails with the owners added to this. Highly recommended.

A warm welcome in a cold November - The Manse, Great Broughton

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at The Manse. The cottage was really cosy, well equipped and comfortable; it felt like staying in the home of a friend, rather than in a holiday let. We had the luxury of there being just the two of us but there’s plenty of room for 4.

The arrival instructions, equipment instructions and information book for local services were extremely helpful and very clear.

We’d read a review saying it’s a bit out of the way; we found that to be part of the charm. Being “just outside” the national park means it’s a little bit quieter than some places but, with the A66 just down the road, everything is easily reached.

Thanks to Robert and Lesley for letting us share your holiday home – we’ll certainly be looking to do so again.

The Cumbria region

The Lake District national park is the UK's number 1 destination and its beauty is quite unique and cannot be compared. Every outdoor activity is catered for. The main interests are - bird watching, fishing (rivers and sea), golf, climbing, via ferrata, walking, gill scrambling, canoeing, boat trips, cycling and mountain biking. The tranquillity of the Western fells which are nearby lead you to the spectacularly beautiful lakes of Buttermere, Crummock water, Wastwater and Ennerdale water are all within reach by car touring and there are endless picnic sites. For the sporty the summit of England's highest mountain Scafell Pike is achievable and for the fell top bagger - the wainwrights will beckon. Lake side walks and boat trips are justly popular on nearby Derwentwater.

The village of Great Broughton is located on the river Derwent that flows from Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite lakes. The cottage is ideally located equally close to both the seaside (The Solway firth) and is in the Northern Lake District and Western fells. The village has a post office/ general store and has 3 pubs and a restaurant for bar meals at the Broughton Craggs Hotel . The beautiful lakes of Bassenthwaite, Buttermere, Crummock water, Derwentwater and Wastwater are easily accessible. Swimming and beaches are possible in the lakes and the seaside town of Allonby ( 20 minutes). The mountains of Skiddaw, Grasmoor, Haystacks and Scafell in the western fells are wonderful days out for walkers and mountaineers. The town of Cockermouth is nearby and is the home of Wordsworth house, Jennings brewery, boutique shops and restaurants. Keswick is a short 20 minute drive and this has market days (Thursday and Saturday), lake boating, the Pencil museum, swimming pool, Theatre by the lake, cinema and many thriving restaurants and shops. The Whinlatter centre is close by and features café, bike hire, high ropes course, mountain bike trails and a live video camera in the Osprey nest (May to September)
