About the Owner

Vanessa and John are pleased to introduce you to our new business Post Card Cottages. After a long career in Medical Sales and the Agricultural Supply trade we have decided to retire early and have a lifestyle change! Actually it is really a semi-retirement plan.

We love the Peak District and have wanted to move to Derbyshire for a long-time. We have spent many weekends and bank holidays walking in the Peak District and just love the area!

So over the last few years we have been planning how we might be able to live and retire to the area. Postcard Cottages is our new business venture and will have three or possibly four holiday cottages available to rent out as holiday cottages. Our aim is to offer lovely cottages in delightful locations furnished to a high standard. Where possible we are using up-cycled and refurbished furniture to give a contemporary and fresh feel.

Johns business is being sold in 2015 and this move has enabled us to get the plans going. In December 2014 we found our delightful cottage in the peaceful village of Biggin-by-Hartington. The property was purchased early in 2015. The property had been empty for over a year and was in need of some serious TLC! The builders got started in March 2015 initially knocking down the old garden shed and converting the downstairs bathroom extension into a lovely dining room space with views over the fields behind the house. Plasterers, plumbers, electricians and joiners got to work…you can see the progress on our Facebook page…postcardcottages…

3 night break in Biggin

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was great, exactly as described on the website.

Waterloo pub about 300 yards away has good selection of drinks, friendly staff and decent food.

Buxton, Matlock, Ashbourne and Bakewell are all a short drive away and nice to pass 2 or 3 hours at each.

Plenty of walk options right on the doorstep. Tissington Trail about 500 yards from the cottage.

Looking forward to returning.

Owner's Response: Hi Jim Many thanks for taking the time to review the cottage for us. So pleased you had a good stay and your comments will be helpful to other guests. You are right the location is very convenient. Apart from the local towns and facilities in the village we have only recently discovered the excellent farm shop nearby called Stanedge Grange. It is really very good and very close, almost just opposite the Newhave petrol station on the main road. Good for good range of groceries. Hope you can come back and stay again soon. Watch out for the The Old Co-Op Barn in Brassington. We have been renovating it and it will be open for booking in January 2017... it is also on the TV on a programme called Big House Litttle House. THe cameras have been following the renovation. Thanks again John

A lovely cottage in a picturesque setting

  • 5 of 5

Our family (myself, husband, 21month daughter and 3month son with our border collie) stayed at No 3 Club Cottage from 10th-14th October 2016.

The cottage is well equipped and well kept with everything we needed. The welcome basket is a lovely touch too. Our daughter adored being surrounded by sheep, chickens and horses too. My husband and I loved being able to put the wood burning stove on when the children were in bed and relaxing with a glass or two.

Biggin is a lovely setting and you're surrounded by various walks in all directions.

Owner's Response: Hi Thank you for taking time to submit your review. It sounds like you had a good time! Good to hear you got some good relaxation time. Yes children love the chickens and sheep just over the back garden wall. There are eggs for sale just down the road which taste great! Hope you can come back soon. Thank you for staying with us. Cheers John

Cosy Cottage in scenic Peak District

  • 4 of 5

I enjoyed a stay here the first weekend in Sept 2016 with my mother. The house was clean and comfortable and we appreicated the wood burner after a wet damp day out cycling. We ate all meals at the house and it is well equipped for this purpose. The use of wifi was useful although a bit slow at times which I guess was due to rural location. The house is well located for access to the Tissington Cycle trail and walks.

Owner's Response: Hi Nicola Thank you for your review. It's good to hear that you found the kitchen well enough equipped for you to cook your own meals in. Yes the wi-fi is fine for e mails and browsing but serious downloading can take a while. BT have promised an upgrade but I am not sure on the timescale. There are several good cycle routes locally and quite a few guests have brought their own bikes. You can also hire bikes just up the road. There are a couple of strong lock up points in the enclosed back garden. Let's hope you can come back and stay again soon. Thanks for staying with us. Regards John

Truly a peaceful country side cottage

  • 5 of 5

Well, at first it was a bit difficult to find the cottage as we arrived after sunset but the locals in the pub knew how to help (even after a couple of pints).

We stayed in the cottage with two kids. No dog - the kids petted the neighbors' chicken and sheep instead. The cottage isn't far from the Alton Towers park which was one of reasons for choosing this location. The surroundings are great for hiking and bike tours. The next bike rental station isn't far away and one of the former train tracks (now bike/walking trails) leading to it runs through Biggin. BTW, note when you use car navigation that there is another 'Biggin' not that far away from this place...

The cottage has an authentic feel and pretty much everything is well explained. You notice that it is been handled by experienced and thoughtful owners that know how to cater for travelers. I.e. there are hiking maps, brochures, detailed instructions how to use the heating, books and movies for rainy days and indoor evenings, hifi-stereo gear, phone charging adapters and whatnot...

The kitchen is fully equipped and spacious so you can really use it ;-). If you don't like to cook: there are several restaurants within less than 15min drive away.

The only downside was the poor mobile phone coverage in the area but that is hardly an issue that you can blame on the owners. The cottage has a phone line that you could use to forward inbound calls and working WiFi throughout the facility.

We enjoyed our stay!

Owner's Response: Hi Frank Thank you for your review and it's good to hear you enjoyed your stay. It's a good point about the mobile phone coverage. Coverage in the Derbyshire Dales is not great. The cottage wifi and connection speed is ok for wi-fi calling which is an option on iPhone and other phones may have similar options. The cottage has a landline and we give out the number for incoming calls although outgoing also are restricted to emergency numbers. I know several guests have given the number to work and / or relatives so they can call in if necessary. Thanks for staying with us and I hope you can come back soon. Ps watch out for our new barn conversion in Brassington which will be available in early 2017. Regards John

Owner's Response: Hi James Delighted you enjoyed your first family break and that everything went well for you all. Thank you for the review…the note about your daughter will be helpful to other new parents thinking about staying at the cottage. We provide stairgate, travel cot and high chair all free of charge. The stairs are safe with a door at the bottom and the stairgate at the top. The gardens are fully enclosed and secure protecting wandering toddlers and dogs alike! Please come back soon. Thank you for staying with us. Regards, Joh & Vanessa
