About John & Vanessa Marriott

Vanessa and John are pleased to introduce you to our new business Post Card Cottages. After a long career in Medical Sales and the Agricultural Supply trade we have decided to retire early and have a lifestyle change! Actually it is really a semi-retirement plan.

We love the Peak District and have wanted to move to Derbyshire for a long-time. We have spent many weekends and bank holidays walking in the Peak District and just love the area!

So over the last few years we have been planning how we might be able to live and retire to the area. Postcard Cottages is our new business venture and will have three or possibly four holiday cottages available to rent out as holiday cottages. Our aim is to offer lovely cottages in delightful locations furnished to a high standard. Where possible we are using up-cycled and refurbished furniture to give a contemporary and fresh feel.

Johns business is being sold in 2015 and this move has enabled us to get the plans going. In December 2014 we found our delightful cottage in the peaceful village of Biggin-by-Hartington. The property was purchased early in 2015. The property had been empty for over a year and was in need of some serious TLC! The builders got started in March 2015 initially knocking down the old garden shed and converting the downstairs bathroom extension into a lovely dining room space with views over the fields behind the house. Plasterers, plumbers, electricians and joiners got to work…you can see the progress on our Facebook page…postcardcottages…

John & Vanessa Marriott purchased this cottage in 2015

Why John & Vanessa Marriott chose Derbyshire Dales

Everything you need! Fully equipped cosy cottage with sheep and chickens over the wall all within a stroll to the village pub. Plenty of walks, ideal for family breaks or a romantic weekend curled up in front of the log burner, refurbished 2015, free dedicated wi-fi, sky tv, pets welcome.

What makes this cottage unique

The open views across the fields are very special and guests always remark how lovely the location is. Get away from it all! For special offers and more options please see our own website at www.postcardcottages.co.uk

Wonderful

The cottage was perfect. Everything one could possibly need is provided and the bed was very comfortable.

We had some lovely walks directly from the cottage which were made extra beautiful due to the snow.

The local pub is very welcoming, the food reasonably priced and good quality.

I would highly recommend this cottage for your holiday.

Owner's Response: Hi Susan So pleased you liked the cottage, we love Derbyshire and used to come here on holiday all the time and now we live here. I also just love the rolling hills covered in sheep and walking is endless and sublime. Why not look at our new property The Old Co-op Barn at Brassington. Again this sleeps 4 and you will be surprised at some of the interior design such as sacking, dustbin lids and a whole kitchen made from old pallets. Also soon to be on a TV renovation show Channel 4 Big house Little House, 4pm on a Sat later this spring. Hopefully John and I will come across well. Regards Vanessa and John

Postcard Cottage, a cosy holiday, luxury surroundings, dog friendly

  • 5 of 5

Just back after a super four night stay at Number 3 Club Cottage. It has been renovated to a luxury standard and the owners have thought of everything to make your stay memorable. Small touches such as spare charger cables, welcome wine, sky tv, a kitchen packed full of utensils... the list is endless. We would highly recommend this property and would certainly stay again. It's dog friendly and there are plenty of walks from the village of Biggin with no need to use your car.

Owner's Response: Hi Tim Pleased you enjoyed your stay in No3 Club cottage, it may be January but the weather has been lovely and crisp outside, a lovely time of year to see far reaching views across the dales. I am pleased you and your dog enjoyed the walks and visit to the local pup. Why not come back in the spring and see the new borne lambs and baby chicks in the back field behind the back garden. Regards Vanessa

3 night break in Biggin

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was great, exactly as described on the website.

Waterloo pub about 300 yards away has good selection of drinks, friendly staff and decent food.

Buxton, Matlock, Ashbourne and Bakewell are all a short drive away and nice to pass 2 or 3 hours at each.

Plenty of walk options right on the doorstep. Tissington Trail about 500 yards from the cottage.

Looking forward to returning.

Owner's Response: Hi Jim Many thanks for taking the time to review the cottage for us. So pleased you had a good stay and your comments will be helpful to other guests. You are right the location is very convenient. Apart from the local towns and facilities in the village we have only recently discovered the excellent farm shop nearby called Stanedge Grange. It is really very good and very close, almost just opposite the Newhave petrol station on the main road. Good for good range of groceries. Hope you can come back and stay again soon. Watch out for the The Old Co-Op Barn in Brassington. We have been renovating it and it will be open for booking in January 2017... it is also on the TV on a programme called Big House Litttle House. THe cameras have been following the renovation. Thanks again John

A lovely cottage in a picturesque setting

  • 5 of 5

Our family (myself, husband, 21month daughter and 3month son with our border collie) stayed at No 3 Club Cottage from 10th-14th October 2016.

The cottage is well equipped and well kept with everything we needed. The welcome basket is a lovely touch too. Our daughter adored being surrounded by sheep, chickens and horses too. My husband and I loved being able to put the wood burning stove on when the children were in bed and relaxing with a glass or two.

Biggin is a lovely setting and you're surrounded by various walks in all directions.

Owner's Response: Hi Thank you for taking time to submit your review. It sounds like you had a good time! Good to hear you got some good relaxation time. Yes children love the chickens and sheep just over the back garden wall. There are eggs for sale just down the road which taste great! Hope you can come back soon. Thank you for staying with us. Cheers John

Cosy Cottage in scenic Peak District

  • 4 of 5

I enjoyed a stay here the first weekend in Sept 2016 with my mother. The house was clean and comfortable and we appreicated the wood burner after a wet damp day out cycling. We ate all meals at the house and it is well equipped for this purpose. The use of wifi was useful although a bit slow at times which I guess was due to rural location. The house is well located for access to the Tissington Cycle trail and walks.

Owner's Response: Hi Nicola Thank you for your review. It's good to hear that you found the kitchen well enough equipped for you to cook your own meals in. Yes the wi-fi is fine for e mails and browsing but serious downloading can take a while. BT have promised an upgrade but I am not sure on the timescale. There are several good cycle routes locally and quite a few guests have brought their own bikes. You can also hire bikes just up the road. There are a couple of strong lock up points in the enclosed back garden. Let's hope you can come back and stay again soon. Thanks for staying with us. Regards John
