About John & Vanessa Marriott

Vanessa and John are pleased to introduce you to our new business Post Card Cottages. After a long career in Medical Sales and the Agricultural Supply trade we have decided to retire early and have a lifestyle change! Actually it is really a semi-retirement plan.

We love the Peak District and have wanted to move to Derbyshire for a long-time. We have spent many weekends and bank holidays walking in the Peak District and just love the area!

So over the last few years we have been planning how we might be able to live and retire to the area. Postcard Cottages is our new business venture and will have three or possibly four holiday cottages available to rent out as holiday cottages. Our aim is to offer lovely cottages in delightful locations furnished to a high standard. Where possible we are using up-cycled and refurbished furniture to give a contemporary and fresh feel.

Johns business is being sold in 2015 and this move has enabled us to get the plans going. In December 2014 we found our delightful cottage in the peaceful village of Biggin-by-Hartington. The property was purchased early in 2015. The property had been empty for over a year and was in need of some serious TLC! The builders got started in March 2015 initially knocking down the old garden shed and converting the downstairs bathroom extension into a lovely dining room space with views over the fields behind the house. Plasterers, plumbers, electricians and joiners got to work…you can see the progress on our Facebook page…postcardcottages…

John & Vanessa Marriott purchased this cottage in 2015

We had a very welcoming cozy comfortable cottage. The weather was kind with great walks from the door. Good evening meals in the local pub.

Cosy ,comfortable well equipped holiday cottage .for the less dryer days the place was roomy enough

  • 5 of 5

The place was well equipped the kitchen was adequate for cooking simple meals.

The place didn't feel too cramped for the four of us (2 smalls dogs and myself and my wife) . I like the idea of a porch where you could put your muddy boots and dry your rain coats. Fresh eggs on sale at the bottom of the garden and a very helpful friendly next door neighbour who sorted the bins out. Was a pleasant stay

Clean, well equipped cottage near some great sights in the Peak District

  • 4 of 5

We have a great stay. As a family of 2 adults and 2 kids the place was great. Especially the outside space which with the great weather meant our 2 year old was able to run in and out! (Topped off by the sheep and chickens in the field behind the cottage!). The local pub was good and for future visitors we recommend heading to Hartington (only a couple of minutes away) who have a good local store and another great local pub!

The cottage is well equipped with all the things you need kitchen wise. All in all a great place.

Overall, we had a great stay and would recommend it to anyone!

Owner's Response: Hi Benjamin So pleased you loved the cottage. We chose it because the garden was so child and dog friendly and that the sun shines in the front of the house all morning and the back in the afternoon. Hope you can come back another time

Clean and Cosy cottage with easy access to great walks

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very cosy for my wife and I and my dog. It was very clean, the owners have obviously put a lot of work into it.

We even had a spare room, my kids would have loved it but they've now grown out of holidaying with us.

It was well situated for going off for some lovely walks without taking the car.

Nearby there is a smashing pub 'The Waterloo' which is very welcoming and does great food and beer.

By taking the car you can easily access Buxton and Bakewell if you want to saunter around some shops or there are more walks from them.

We didn't find any shops within walking distance so if you don't want to go out in the car make sure you have the essentials with you. There is a garage shop not too far if you do get caught short.

All in all I'd very much recommend this cottage as we a a great relaxing break.

Delightful, warm, welcoming and homely with everything you could possibly need.

  • 5 of 5

A beautifully prepared warm and welcoming fully equipped cottage in delightful surroundings. You will want for nothing and the audio visual equipment is impressive too. Wifi is excellent but don't expect a good mobile signal, however EE mobile was available most of the time in the rear garden! The incredibly detailed information pack was most welcome. I arrived armed with logs but although the weather was cold, the superb easily controllable central heating kept me very warm and cosy and there was no need for the log burner. The friendly Waterloo Inn keeps excellent beer and provides very good food. I can't wait to return and recommend the cottage very highly. Thank you John and Vanessa - well done!
