About the property

Two bedroom stone cottage 700 yds from beach

Pencraig is ideally located for a great holiday or short break for up to four people in Pembrokeshire. It's a seven minute walk down the lane to the beach, and Dinas Island, more then once voted AA 'Walk of the Year' is just beyond. The cottage is neither overlooked or part of an estate or development. The beach and the whole Pembrokeshire coast is a natural attraction. The heather and hills in the National Park are just a mile or so away. When it comes to finding a good restaurant or local food there's no better town than Newport which is just 3 miles from the cottage. Newport has some of the best restaurants in the county, a fabulous beach and dunes, an 18 hole links golf course, unique boat club.

Pencraig is a stone cottage dating back a century or two. It has a nice log fire and is really comfortable and homely. The main bedroom has double, and the second room twin beds. The living room has two sofas, easy chair and TV in one part, and a dining table next to the kitchen which well equipped. The bathroom is modern, with full size bath and shower. Rentals are very reasonable priced and I will match the price of any comparable property.

Situated midway between Newport and Fishguard, Pencraig offers the charm of a country cottage together with modern facilities. Visitors love the location and atmosphere of Pencraig, which is on rent at very attractive rates. Contact the owner, Mike Donovan, today!

About The Owner

I'm an international agricultural journalist, and founder and editor of Practical Farm Ideas magazine. Pencraig was bought when I sold the dairy herd, as a lifetime country retreat where the family - I have four grown-up children and grandchildren - can get to and enjoy privacy in a way that's impossible in hotels, parcs and other mass-market venues.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1996

Why The Owner chose Dinas Cross

We found Pwllgwaelod beach shortly after moving to West Wales, and thought it magical, but for years were unable to re-discover it. Then we found Pencraig was for sale, and there was no question that this was the place to buy. It's small, but plenty large enough for a family of four to get a great holiday.

Prices: for some reason the rate list insists on saying the rates are 'From £...' . It's not 'from'. That's the price we ask you to pay. There are no meters, so gas, electric TV etc all included. No wi-fi - sorry.

What makes this cottage unique

"This place hasn't changed in 40 years" a passer-by remarked to me when I was doing the grass last year, and he's not far wrong. The coast is uncrowded and just not really discovered by the holiday industry, and long may that continue.

Open fire and welcoming home from home at Pencraig. Fantastic location, right between two beaches!!

  • 5 of 5

Pencraig was a little gem to find. As keen walkers of the Pembrokeshire Coastline, this cottage with open log fire, comfy lounge and deep bath was a real pleasure to come home to. Situated at the 'neck' of Dinas Head, we were spoilt by beaches either side and the detached cottage is ideally located to explore the natural beauty and wildlife all along the coastline. St David's and Cardigan are only 30 minutes maximum drive either side and walking that stretch intermittently gave us private coves, waterfalls and seals and dolphins. The cottage is well equipped and Mike, the owner, has really tried to provide a warm, cottage on the coast feel. Parking, garden space and two good sized bedrooms provide peace, relaxation and comfort. Having visited Dinas before and stayed elsewhere, we felt we'd missed out by not discovering Pencraig sooner. Both neighbouring beaches have car parks and get jammed with cars and people in the summer. You'd be the lucky ones others envy staying at this cottage whilst others walk past to get to the beach. We are definitely planning on being regular, repeat visitors to Pencraig.

Southern Wales region

The north coast of Pembrokeshire has cliffs and coves, places to explore and enjoy. Visitors will find attractive and affordable places to visit and eat in. The National Park includes a swathe of open country in the Prescelli hills which are very close to Dinas village (1 mile). Pwllgwaelod is a sandy cove facing Fishguard bay, and Cwm-yr-Egwys a similar cove facing Newport Bay. These beaches provide safe swimming and have natural shelter. The area has plenty of history - ancient chapels, monuments and burial sites, and St Davids Cathedral.

Pwllgwaelod

Riding, boats and swimming, walking, and some great off-road bike trails make N Pembs a place for where you can enjoy activities at reasonable prices and without crowds. There's a lot of culture, Brynhenllan village having a number of well known artists as residents. The St Davids music festival in the cathedral, the Fishguard Music Festival and other music activities such as Cardigan Eisteddfod, male voice choirs all provide different and memorable evenings. Being outside busy Newport can be a bonus in the summer season. You can borrow my 14ft Skipper dinghy if you're a competent sailor. There is a bike at the cottage, and another available.

Notes:

  • A relaxing living room has quality sofas, log fire and leads to the adjoining kitchen with washing machine, new electric stove, fridge, microwave etc. Royal Doulton tableware adds an extra touch, and we have quality unbreakable crockery for children and outside use. The two bedrooms, one twin and the other double, are the other side of the hall. The bathroom is smart and easy to keep clean with a combi boiler for water and central heating. There's a travel cot and high chair. The cottage is furnished as a home with good quality beds and sofas etc, and you'll find an interesting selection of books, music, paintings. The idea is to provide you with more than a shell in which to stay, but a cottage offering much more than the standard corporate rental or hotel room. Note: logs for the fire are available at the local garage, or pre-book logs by email and we can arrange for them to be there on your arrival. Contact for E-Brochure, booking form, more details
