About the Owner

After a successful corporate career Sarah stumbled across Dragon House and saw the potential. She sold her farmhouse on the side of a hill in nearby Ebrington and bought Dragon House and its derelict buildings in the garden in 2012. It took 6 months to gain Planning permission and listed building consent for the 3 cottages. Builders moved on site in October 2012 and after 18 months of creating the cottages and completely refurbishing the main house the guests were welcomed in March 2014, the paint on the walls just about dry! Sarah lives in the main house with her 8 year old son and her mother, the keen gardener, lives in a annex to the main house.

Chipping Campden is a small North Cotswold market town famous for its historic and elegant High Street dating from the 14th to 17th centuries. A recent edition of “Country Life” included it as one of England’s best 100 views. The word “Chipping” comes from the Old English word for market place and at its centre, a few steps from Dragon House, is the ancient Market Hall with its splendid arches built in 1627. Chipping Campden was a rich wool trading centre in the Middle Ages and the very grand early perpendicular church of St James has superb architecture, medieval altar frontals, cope and vast and extravagant 17th century monuments to local wealthy silk merchant Sir Baptist Hicks and his family. Near the church are the Almshouses, Woolstaplers Hall and the Court Barn museum which celebrates the rich Arts and Crafts tradition of the area. Sir Baptist Hicks was responsible for Campden House which was destroyed by fire during the English Civil War, possibly to prevent it falling into the hands of the Roundheads. All that now remains of this once imposing estate are two gatehouses, two Jacobean banqueting houses and Lady Juliana’s gateway.

In the early 20th century Chipping Campden became known as a centre for the Cotswold Arts and Crafts Movement and visitors find much of interest in this respect in both the Court Bsrn Museum and the Silk Mill in Sheep Street.

Since the early 1600s Chipping Campden has been home to a championship of rural games which became Robert Dover’s Cotswold Olimpick Games. These Olimpicks are held every summer on the Friday following Spring Bank Holiday on Dovers Hill. A novel event is the sport of shin-kicking, hay stuffed down trousers can ease one’s passage to later rounds! At the end of these Games there is a massive bonfire and a fireworks display followed by a torch-lit procession down from the hill to the town square to celebrate with dancing to a local band. The following day is the Scuttlebrook Wake where local people don fancy dress to follow the Scuttlebrook Queen and attendants to the town square pulled in a decorated dray by the town’s Morris Men. Then follows displays of Maypole and Country dancing by the local primary schools and the Morris Men. Decorated floats and fancy dress competitions entertain the crowds and a traditional street Fair is held in the High Street.

Today Chipping Campden is a very popular Cotswold visitors destination with old inns, hotels, specialist shops, tea rooms and restaurants. It has a rich diversity of creative talent for you to enjoy including artists, writers, jewellers, photographers and musicians. The Court Barn Museum celebrates the story of craft and design and the Old Silk Mill is home to a wealth of creativity.

A number of festivals and events are held including the renowned Music Festival, a Literature Festival, Made in the Cotswolds, Open Gardens and nearby Longborough Opera.

Walking in the Cotswold Hills takes you through wonderful scenery and beautiful villages and several long and short distance footpaths pass through Chipping Campden making it an excellent centre. The Cotswolds are blessed with a variety of styles of wonderful gardens which are open to the public and details of the many gardens and walks can be obtained from the Visitor Centre opposite Dragon House. Other outdoor activities within easy reach of Campden include Cycling, the Blossom Trail, Horse Riding, Archerty, Falconry, Fishing, Paintballing, Quad Biking, Hunting, Horse Racing

and Shooting.

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Within easy reach of Campden, visitors often visit: Stratford upon Avon, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace, Oxford, Worcester and Cheltenham. Even closer are Sudeley Castle, Broadway Tower, Stanway Fountain, Batsford Arboretum, Snowshill Manor and Chastleton House. Children particularly enjoy Birdland Park and Gardens, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Cotswold Farm Park, Cotswold Water Park, Cotswold Motor Museum & Toy Collection and the Glos & Warwicks Steam Railway.

If you need any additional inspiration further suggestions can be found on the Chipping Campden websites, the National Trust or indeed most of the towns in the area have their own information on the Internet.
