The owner treated us with complete arrogance and contempt
On booking apartment we informed the owner that we were in our early 70's, would not have access to wifi/internet whilst in Lisbon and that one of us would be sleeping in the lounge and could he please make up the bed ready for us. Owner replied that we should not worry and that everything would be ready for our arrival. I agreed to phone on arrival at train station so that he should have time to meet us at the flat. The taxi driver did not know of the address so I phoned Luis and he gave taxi driver instructions. On arriving at our destination we were surprised to discover that the taxi had to leave us some distance from the apartment as access was not possible. I then phoned owner who told us to make our own way to the apt. We had no idea where it was and the owner then told me to use my phone gps system and he would open the door automatically. I reminded him we had already said that whilst in Lisbon we would not have wifi. He was quite off hand and said he couldn't come and meet us for some time and he would send his cleaner. The lady arrived but unfortunately could speak no English. We struggled up to the flat and with enormous effort managed to get our cases to the 2ndfloor up very steep and rickety stairs. The bed in lounge had not been made up, the cleaning lady did her best but communication was very limited. We were left with only one key, which meant that should one of us be left in the flat with no key we would not be able to open the front door to exit. There was no light on the lower stairs for the first 2 nights. I sent a text to owner and he told me that I would have to contact him through HomeAway as normal texts were too expensive. I again reminded him that we had no wifi access but I noticed, on arrival back in uk, that Owner still continued to send messages via HomeAway instead of phoning or texting me. There were no instructions left in property regarding use of appliances. Both my friend and myself cook on gas so we had no idea how to use electric hob. Neither was there any information regarding local facilities There was a burnt out socket in the bathroom and a very dangerous step in the lounge. The final straw was when the people upstairs moved in and it sounded as if the ceiling was going to cave in. We decided to leave the flat early without seeing Owner and spent last 2 nights at the Holiday Inn, Liberdade. The flat was ok for 2 but not for 4. Very disappointing especially as Alfama was a great area
