10 mins away by car:
La Rochelle: is certainly among the most attractive port towns of France, and is a very pleasant place to visit and to pass a few days because there is a great deal to see and do. Known as La Ville Blanche (the White City) the light limestone facades of La Rochelle glow in the light of the sun. The focus of the town is the old harbour, very picturesque with its two monumental towers (St Nicolas Tower and the Tower of the Chain) either side of the port entrance. A third tower, the 'Tower of the Lantern' is connected to the Chain Tower by a section of the ramparts that originally defended the town.
The old town, just behind the harbour, is extensive and also very well preserved dating mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The main shopping streets especially have many fine buildings, but you will also need to explore the side streets in this part of the town. The town has an impressive unified appearance, with arcaded streets, houses constructed in the local light stone, and light grey shutters. Boutiques now occupy the ground floor of many of the buildings.
Les Minimes was built on reclaimed land, and now is the largest marinas in Europe.

Aytré: lovely little town with all the local facilities.

Chatelaillon-Plage: When you arrive in Châtelaillon-Plage you have no doubt about what attracts the visitors - it is very much a typical modern seaside village, developed along the beach. The beach itself is the longest in the region, at almost three kilometres long, and sandy and popular. A stretch of about 200 metres of beach is also supervised for your safety. The rest of the resort contains all the ingredients you would expect: a casino, a spa treatment centre, a racetrack, mini-golf, various beach ensure you make the most of your visit.

Take a boat from la Rochelle or Fouras alternatively you can drive to some of the beautiful islands in the area.

Day out by car:
Rochefort: 30 minutes - Rochefort was a strategic location from the 17th century and Louis XIV built in the city "the most beautiful and largest Arsenal" of his kingdom by the Charente river. Within the naval yard there are museums and the 'Royal Rope' where rope was made for the French fleet. Rochefort was instrumental in the maritime destiny of France.
Threats of invasions gave birth to a whole system of fortifications including Fort Boyard, Fort Vauban, Fort Enet, Fort Lupin, Fort Liédot in the area.

Marennes: 45 minutes - Marennes is a lovely town with a 12th century church, famous for its fine Oysters and speciality of mussels, fish and seafood

Saintes: 45 minutes - Saintes is a Gallo-Roman city, City of Art and History, a mosaic of landscapes, monuments and gastronomy and there is a great deal to enjoy when visiting this lively town. Because of its gallo-roman, medieval and classical heritage Saintes is officially listed as a 'Ville d'Art et d'Histoire'.
You will notice this as soon as you arrive in the town centre and see the large Arch of Germanicus (a Roman triumphal arch) on the banks of the river, a good place to start your visit of the town.

Cognac: 1hours 15 mins...... The name of Cognac is known the world over because of the brandy produced in the region, and the chance to visit the Cognac distilleries certainly attracts many visitors, but the town itself is also very interesting to explore with an attractive riverside and historical centre to discover. The buildings in Cognac are mostly constructed from the local white stone that is found throughout the Poitou-Charentes region and makes the local architecture so distinctive and attractive.
Cognac 'old town', the medieval part of the town, is a region of narrow cobbled streets, hemmed in by attractive houses from the 15th to 18th centuries, and a multitude of brandy maturing warehouses along the riverside.
A few of the older houses are half-timbered, while most are in the local white stone. Your visit will focus around the Chateau and river a little south of the 'old gateway', and into the old town around Rue Grande, Rue Saulnier and Rue Magdeleine.

Le Futuroscope: 1hour 30 mins and discover the future...Futuroscope is a French theme park of multimedia, cinematographic futuroscope and audio-visual techniques.

Not your ordinary gite!
A difficult review to write! There is some truth in the more negative reviews, and the shower (over a typical French hip bath) does require a degree of athleticism not always granted to us older types - and is not the greatest shower anyway. On the other hand, the history of the site is fascinating, and the now decaying outbuildings were in their time a genuine wonderland complete with beach and pool fed by the mill race!! What remains we found comfortable and the shaded evenings in the warm garden were beautiful and will always be a fond memory. So my advice to future visitors is to read a good selection of the reviews on line and then decide whether you could be happy here. We were, we loved it, and we might well return. I do not know how much longer Josette can maintain the property in a rentable condition - but she is a wonderful host and in a short time we felt we had made a new friend. We recommend the host and the property!

Uniue property
The property was built up over many years. if is a Daliesque meets Disney fantasy house and garden. Despite it slowly running down, it still contains an air of elegance from its former glory. The Host spoke English and all instructions were easy to follow. the house is small and suitable for a couple. The small town of Le Jarne has a bread shop and restaurant. it is close to La Rochelle yet very rural. with lovely walks in the area. We had a lovely stay in the area and would return back to the property another time.

Quiet and ideal for our needs plus lovely owner
The property suited us fine, quiet and ideal for us with a bedroom each and a lovely environment and location. The property however would benefit greatly from money being spent eg shower cubicle and gardening work to enhance what is a fantastic Alice in Wonderland experience. We will be more than happy to spend more time there, but a cash injection would turn the whole experience into something special. We must emphasize that the owner was a most lovely lady, very accommodating and if we lived nearby would be a friend.

We are in our Seventies and are retired.
I have inherited from my parents this little house that I have all relooked for the pleasure (I hope) of British Tourists. I fell in love of Great Britain in my youth... I suppose I have transmitted to my daugthers as 2 of them married an English man.
