A picturesque old house with beams, exposed stonework and open fires. It is a large house with plenty of comfortable living space for large parties and all the mod cons for a comfortable holiday.
The enormous kitchen has additional dining space and opens directly on to a big, south-facing terrace which overlooks its own secluded private pool and lovely countryside. The terrace has lighting for dining al fresco on those balmy nights, a barbecue and a vine covered shady area. It is a perfect location for a relaxing sun downer. The terrace can be made secure for small children and of course the pool has secure safety fencing with childproof gates. Three of the five comfortable bedrooms are ensuite and some are heavily beamed - mind your head!
We welcome children and provide equipment for babies and toddlers included in the price. We also have plenty of games and activities for older children and a selection of bicycles to borrow for all ages.
A former Dordogne farm, Les Taloches sits on the edge of the pretty riverside village of Tourtoirac and is paradise for adults and children of all ages with 19 acres of wood and meadow to explore. Ideally located in an unspoilt area of the Dordogne, the property is close to the fairytale château of Hautefort, with plenty of cycling routes from the door (including the Lawrence of Arabia route which goes through the village).
Gracing two sides of a large, lime-tree shaded courtyard are the oak-beamed farmhouse - La Châtaigne - and a huge stone barn - La Grange - now transformed into a superb house which are great for families and groups sleeping between 8 and 20 people (they can be hired individually or together).
Both are self-contained for privacy - each has its own unusually large private pool, secluded garden and separate entrance drive. Secluding the houses are fields and orchard and, for the energetic, there is a big play area, a badminton court, table tennis, a games room and bikes. For children the massive sandpit and playhouse are a great attraction but the lovely rural location is also perfect for those who just want to relax in the sunshine. Tourtoirac village has a boulangerie, bar and restaurant just 500m away.
Extracts from our guest books say it all:
'We had a fantastic week. The wedding, the family get-together the following day at our amazing holiday home, the scenery, the people, the food, France itself, were all a joy. I promised Suzie and Gary, the lovely new owners of Les Taloches, who couldn't have been kinder and more helpful, that I would spread the word and this is my effort (and, no, I'm not on commission, honestly!). Family members, who hadn't been on holiday in France before, were so taken with it, they are planning to return next year. As son no. 1 said, "If this is to be your last self-catering holiday, it might as well be somewhere this special" and, do you know, it was, it really was.
PS If you should happen to read this, Suzie and Gary, I did say to you that my wheels mostly grind extremely slowly so, for this post to be done only a week after our return, is pretty phenomenal for me and is a testament to you both and not just because of the gorgeous lemon drizzle cake you so kindly baked for us, Suzie; honest!!! We wish you every success in your venture. You deserve it.

About the Owner
Why Suzie Andrews and Gary Hall chose Perigord Noir
The lovely old farmhouse and the beautiful stone barns were exactly as we imagined a Dordogne property to be. Both the letting properties were big and comfortable and each had its own pool. Our own accommodation was discreetly tucked away. The houses and the whole area steeped in history and has many traditional features - though of course it has been updated! The climate is delightful and the countryside is beautiful - lots of forest and fields interspersed with romantic villages and loads of sights to see.

Fabulous Family Retreat
Great house and grounds. La Chataigne had everything we wanted and more. A great outdoor play area and indoor games room kept the kids entertained when they were exhausted from the pool! Spacious and well-appointed, we enjoyed cooking and relaxing on the terrace. We were a group of 12 (3 families with 2 kids each) and we didn't feel cramped at all. Jo and John were great hosts and very helpful for recommending local excursions. We'd definitely return!
La Grange was perfect for our family vacation. Jo was very prompt replying and helpful prior to our arrival with any questions we had. We were a family of 7, 4 adults and 3 little girls, 9,7 and almost 3 and our week's stay in the beautifully restored barn, which is huge, was wonderful. The pool which was very well maintained by John, was a big hit with our family, as was the play ground and sand box.
There is so much to see within the area or an hour or so drive away. Sometimes the pool kept us at home which none of us minded anyway as very relaxing. We ate at 2 of the restaurants in Hautefort as recommended by Jo and John and both were excellent.
All in all, a wonderful vacation and we could have stayed longer.
Dreams do come true!,
From my teenage years I've had a love affair with France. Unfortunately it's a long way from Australia, so books (both fiction and non-fiction), documentaries and movies have supplemented my four visits. Having 'done' many of the well known tourist activities I wanted to immerse myself in 'the real France'. The one where people lived real lives and went about doing normal things. I wanted to be 'in the moment' and not rushing off to the next cathedral or chateau.
This September, I stayed with a group of relatives and friends in 'The Grange', at "Les Taloches". I'd had plenty of time over the years to fantasize about the perfect farmhouse. This was it!! From my first impression, to the reality of living there for two weeks, I was in heaven. The atmosphere was so genuine with the thick stone walls and ancient beams, the wooden staircase leading to the mezzanine floor and the attic bedrooms. Huge shelves of books, records, cozy sofas, the enormous refectory table and huge swimmming pool all catered to the perfect setting for complete relaxation. The garden and surrounding terraces were charming and everything was beautfully maintained.
Our hosts Jo and John, couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. Their knowledge of things to do and see is excellent. As my ability with the French language is minimal, I found it very relaxing (and entertaining) to communicate freely with them. When I went to the village people were very friendly and tolerant with my attempts to 'parlez'.
I did go to the fascinating local caves, Hautefort, the Medical Museum, a birthday party, villaging, brocantes, Perigeux, Lascaux, a car boot sale, markets and several times to the local cafe. All great, however I also treasure memories of the curtain blowing in my attic window, the sound of the night birds, bells from the Abbey, the smell of roses and lavender, lazy meals at the refectory table, the beautiful fat cattle in the fields, laughter, good wine and feeling at home in this gorgeous part of the world.
This time at "Les Taloches" was more than a holiday. It was definitely not something I could have experienced staying in a hotel. I felt I 'lived' in rural France. The length of time was not the point....it was the quality!!!
Unwind and relax in a stunning venue
We stayed for only four days as part of a larger party in early July (2011), there lies our first error - it should have been longer! Jon and Jo were excellent hosts, both homes are stunning, homely, clean and full of character.
We have two little ones (18 months and 3.5 hrs) and it was the first trip we have had where we were fully able to relax. Every aspect is child friendly, the facilities are perfectly French, and the whole farmhouse set up just works for group stays.
There are airports very nearby despite its remoteness. Even if you travel in from Bordeaux, its a little under 2 hrs (just watch out for the Gendarmes!)
Anyone considering these houses should just get on with it, you won't regret it. The whole area is stunning for relaxation and experiencing the Dordogne life, something we hope to experience more of in the future.
La Chataigne (June 2011)
When we arrived at La Chataigne we quickly assessed this was no ordinary French cottage. The setup is amazing, the cottage full of character and able to accommodate lots of arrangements, the enclosed swimming pool cleaned daily, a BBQ area to die for and extended play and grounds that gave the family fun time without having to drive for an hour! Happy to recommend John/Jo to anyone wanting a family holiday in north Dordogne.
We returned for the third time with our growing group of friends and our children. Les Taloches was absolutely great. With so much to do for little ones - the huge sandpit was a real success. It was really marvellous to be able to walk to the bakers each morning or to wander down to the bar. There are lovely walks around the surrounding countryside and we also enjoyed some bike rides and jogs. We thoroughly recommend La Chataigne.

Activity and Interests
In one of the loveliest parts of the Dordogne, a few miles from the fabulous chateau of Hautefort, Les Taloches offers woods and fields to explore, a games room, table tennis, badminton, a boules pitch, a sandpit, a substantial playground with playhouse and a range of bicycles to borrow. An easy walk to the pretty riverside at Tourtoirac, nearby are canoeing, tennis, fishing, horse-riding, the possibility of rock-climbing or caving.
On our doorstep are miles of tracks for walking or riding bikes or horses. We are also within easy reach of both the hundreds of castles, caves, prehistoric sites such as Lascaux and Les Eyzies, lakes with water sports, medieval towns such as Brantome and Sarlat and lively markets.
The Perigord has lots of excellent restaurants to sample the gastronomic delights of this region - duck, foie gras, truffles. However, we also have a lovely beamed 'summer kitchen' shaded by a lime tree, where we can offer occasional evening meals or perhaps a picnic on our top field overlooking the valley.
Other Activities: canoeing, rock climbing, caving, tree-canopy walking, quad bikes, hot-air ballooning
Golf: There is a 9-hole golf-course near Excideuil with a very nice clubhouse. There are also courses at Perigueux and Brive, both about 40km. There are a number of other courses in the area but they are slightly further away.
