Medieval house in perched village with exceptional views near Siena

Overview

Property

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6, modernised kitchen, dining and seating area

Casa Dell’ Artista is situated in the medieval perched village of Roccatederighi in the heart of Tuscany, 45 minutes drive from Siena. This is an ideal location for discovering all that Tuscany has to offer, the cuisine, the art and the cities of Florence, San Gimigniano, Volterra etc. Rome is one and a half hours by train.

The village lies at a height of 1,500 feet and one of its distinguishing features are the rocks with their stunning views. The house, which has its own small turret & secluded garden offers spectacular views over the Marrema Plain and the sea in the distance. This view can be enjoyed from all the windows. The old cobbled streets, which are traffic free add to the atmosphere of peace & tranquility & is totally safe & secure. The house has been totally renovated & includes a new kitchen and bathroom. A particular feature is the turret, with an archer's window, adding character and history to the property.

The south facing garden is another feature with its vine covered terrace, bay tree, fig tree and terracotta pots. The house has two terraces and a lovely very private garden where you can sunbathe and admire the magnificent scenery. Please note the garden shown below the Turret photo does not belong to this house which has a separate private garden with a fig tree ( see photo).

Roccatederighi is a lively village with 2 butchers, 3 bakers , a vegetable shop, grocers and supermarket. The house is within easy walking distance of all the local shops, bars & restaurants. There are 4 restaurants in the village and many more in the immediate locality.

Casa dell'Artista is a fully restored medieval house, set in the Medieval part of the village. Some of the walls are 3 feet thick, which make it extremely cool in the heat of the summer. Every room in the house has wonderful views across the Maremma Plain and to the sea, to the island of Elba.

The house is on three levels. The main entrance is accessed via a small gate, which leads into the vine covered terrace, from which there is the main door, leading onto the ground floor. On entering the house, the stairs to the upper floor are facing the door. The upper floor houses the main bed room, complete with double bed, en suite bathroom and a large terrace with commanding views. Here, you can sit watching the swallows and swifts diving, the birds of prey soaring in the thermals and look over to the silvery sea.The living area,on the ground floor, is set in the small turret, which was part of the old Medieval wall. This has a TV and DVD and large open fireplace. This attractive, airy room, with its terracotta floors and beamed ceiling extends through an archway into to the light and airy modern kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, dish washer , microwave, oven ,hob, toaster. (The washing machine is in the bathroom). The dining area has a dining table and 6 chairs with two windows providing dramatic views of the volcanic rock structures and surrounding countryside. the ceiling is in traditional Tuscan beams and tiles.

The lower floor is approached by a flight of stairs which lead to two further twin bedrooms and a large bathroom, which gives access onto the garden. The larger twin bedroom contains two large single beds. The other smaller bedroom is situated in the turret and has a single bed with a pull out bed of the same size. This again is a delightful room- from your bed you can see the sun rising over the valley below.

On the lower level there is also a a good sized garden/ store room which houses the boiler, water pump and a large fridge/freezer.

The house is situated just below the church and within five minutes walk of all the amenities. The old cobbled streets through which donkeys used to pass in days gone by are too narrow to accommodate cars, which adds to the peace and tranquility. There are, however large free car parks less than 5 minutes away.

The efficient house manager is available to help with the transport of luggage, arranging tours or suggesting excursions.

Guestbook comments from the manager

“ Chris – Thanks so much for letting us use your incredible place in Roccatederighi. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, in large part because we were able to return to your wonderful home at the end of our days in Rome, Florence, Siena & Pisa – and the beach and lake -and the boat trip to Elba! We ate in all the Rocca restaurants and met many of the locals and resident visitors, enjoying it all tremendously. Ricardo was great and provided us with excellent service and support getting our bags into and out of the village – we loved the fiat! We hope to be able to return one day. Let us know if you make your way to Atlanta or northern Florida.

Enjoy and all best, Brad and Mary Lou.”

Tuscany at it's best!

  • 4 of 5

The house was in a fantastic location and clean and tidy on arrival.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the villagers were friendly and helpful.

You will need to be fit to enjoy the location to the full as it is a steep climb to the property but don't let this put you off as the views are spectacular.

Relax, landscape, comfort!

  • 5 of 5

The beautiful "House of the Artist" has proved to be even better than what could be offered by the pictures.

Strengths:

1) the position. This house in Roccatederighi definitely has got the best view over the landscape up to the sea.

2) the structure. All the spaces are comfortable for five guests and the house is equipped with all the comforts that you need.

3) relaxation: in the old Borgo you are immersed in the peace and silence of the thirteenth century, and a few hundred meters you can find everything you need if you want to cook yourself at home.

Weaknesses:

Too early to leave it!...

If you want to relax in a comfortable historic venue then this place will be hard to beat. Selection of nice restaurants and shops all within walking distance. Great views and plenty of wildlife.

Owner's Response: Really pleased John and his family enjoyed themselves at our house. Apart from the great views (and food of course) as John says there is plenty of wildlife in the area.We often see wild boars in the fields below the house, with their young with their distinctive brown stripes. If you are lucky you may also see tortoises, deer and porcupines. The Marina di Alberese, about 40 minutes drive away, is an especially beautiful area - this is where the Parco Naturale is situated with its beautiful sandy beach. Here they have a visitor centre with treks and wildlife tours - you may see red fox, badger, hare, pole cat, porcupines, roe deer, as well as many wonderful wild birds including Herons,Bittern, flamingoes,Ibis,Osprey,Hobby,Peregrine falcon, owls and many others. One of the things I really love is to stand on our balcony and watch the swifts, house martins and swallows flying around - just wonderful.

Our regular home-from-home

  • 5 of 5

This was our 10th visit to Casa dell'artista and we have just booked #11 for June 2016. With such a spacious house, we have regularly invited family and friends to stay with us. The property offers unrivaled views over the Maremma plain and is very convenient for the varied restaurants and shops in the village. Roccatederighi is also well located for visits to the beach and other Tuscan sights. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Great accommodations in historical surroundings

  • 4 of 5

Six adults stayed here for a week. It was like being sent back in time to live in a medieval village for sure. It was a fun and unique experience. One has to be able to walk a bit to the place beyond car access. The third bedroom is a bit small for a couple, but certainly there are places to put belongings just outside the bedroom. The top bedroom with terrace access is fantastic. The surrounding countryside makes for breathtaking views. Lovely, quiet village with some great places to eat. We used this as a base to travel to many towns and sights in a 3 hour radius. To get to other areas in Tuscany, one must travel down winding roads to get to main motorways, but the scenery is worth it. Ricardo is most gracious and helpful. Nearby local winery Ampeleia is definitely worth the visit.

Fantastic views - highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

Our second visit. Interesting, well-equipped house with stunning all round views. Very quiet as it's in the Centro Storico so no cars. Several decent restaurants in the town and a good collection of shops. Lovely walks. Convenient for trips to Siena, Montalcino etc. Helpful local agent, Ricardo, is on the spot. We will certainly visit again.

Location

From the Owner

We came for a holiday to Roccatederighi thirteen years ago and fell in love with its beauty and uniqueness. We had no intention of buying a place in Tuscany but we were enchanted by the place and the people. We decided to look around to see if we could find a place suitable for our family. Our one criteria when we were looking at properties was that the property should have adequate outside space. We were therefore thrilled to find Casa dell'Artista with so much outside space, two terraces and a garden. We were very fortunate to find this unique house. Although it was perfectly habitable and an artist and his family were living there, we totally renovated it. We have continued to improve the house over the years.

The village is situated within wonderful walking & trekking country and there are numerous spectacular walks on the doorstep. The local bike shop rents out bikes and arranges a variety of tours, e.g. wine tasting, spa and history tours.

The beautiful Renaissance towns of Siena, Volterra, Montalcino and MassaMarittima are all within easy driving distance and the abbeys of Sant'Antimo and San Golgano, set in the stunning Tuscan countryside, are well worth a visit. There are also many charming churches, Medieval villages and natural spas in the arrea.

The Islands

Isle of Elba

This is reached by ferry from Piombino (one hours drive on the main autostrada towards Pisa). Follow directions to the ferry terminal, it is all well signposted. Once there it is possible to buy day tickets, either as a foot passenger or with car. Taking the car provides the opportunity to visit more of this beautiful island. The ferry journey is about one hour. Porto Azzuro is particularly attractive with a Mediterranean atmosphere.

Isle of Giglio

Boats run from Port Santo Stefano (about one hours drive) to this beautiful charming island which you can see in the distance from our terrace.

Thermal Spas

The natural hot springs at Petriola are an experience not to be missed.

The thermal springs at Saturnia, although further afield, are larger and a well known tourist attraction.

Bagno Vignolo (close to Pienza) consist of the original Roman baths.

Facilities

From the Owner

One of the unique qualities of Roccatederighi is that it is a genuine Tuscan village, full of charm and life. The people are wonderful, friendly, helpful and genuinely kind. The uniqueness of the house is, without doubt its location and the astounding views, which extend across the Maremma plains to the sea and the islands of Elba, Giglio and Corsica. It offers peace and tranquility and yet in less than 5 minutes you can be in the heart of the village with its bars and restaurants. The Medieval character of the house is also unique. It has a history but is modernised and comfortable.

Travelling to Roccatederighi is easy, either by plane or by car. The nearest airport is Pisa, which is 1.5 hours drive, mostly by motorway. Also, very popular with our guests, is a scenic lake, set in peaceful olive fields, about 25 minutes drive away. Here you can swim in the clear, cool waters which are fed by an underground stream. Within about half hour's drive you can bathe in a natural spa or the sea.
