About Bridgett Gill

Myself (Bridgett Gill) and my partner (Brendan Wheatley) are in our sixties and involved in the world of opera. We run Swansea City Opera, a mid scale opera company which tours all over the UK, and a registered charity. The history, culture and love of music of the Hungarian people were a great influencing factor in our decision to buy a classical apartment in Budapest. We were looking for an investment for our retirement and had planned to visit three countries before making our choice, but after seeing the beauty of Budapest and finding the Hungarian people so friendly and welcoming, we decided to look no further. We hope you love the city us much as we do!

Bridgett Gill purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Bridgett Gill chose Lipótváros

Why we chose this location: Because we live in a very old cottage in Wales and love historic houses, we were looking for a building and apartment that had history and original features. We think we have found the perfect apartment and have completely renovated and restored it with a lot of love and thought. The rooms have beautiful oak floors and magnificent, high ceilings with period lights. Original pictures and limited edition prints decorate the walls. If you love architecture and history this apartment is a perfect choice.

What makes this apartment unique

As well as being in a beautiful building, the apartment is close to all forms of public transport, and central to all the tourist attractions and the Opera House. There is a supermarket directly opposite the house and In addition, because we love good food and wine, we chose a location with good restaurants and cafes close by! By the way I can heartily recommend Hungarian wine, not a lot of it is sold abroad as they keep most of it for themselves!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Bridgett

I just wanted to thank you so much for letting us stay in your wonderful apartment. All the arrangements with Attila were perfect and the flat could not be in a better location, more comfortable or better equipped. It is the perfect base for visiting Budapest.

Sadly we didn’t get to the baths so we have a perfect excuse for returning one day!

Thanks once again and best regards

Notes:
The apartment is fully centrally heated but has no air-conditioning, there are two floor standing electric fans. In the interests of all wishing to use the apartment, this accommodation is strictly no smoking and we are unable to accept pets. The apartment is also not suitable for children under 10 years old. Strictly no hen or stag parties. There are no special adaptations in the apartment but we have had one lady with limited mobility, who often used a wheelchair, staying at the apartment with a friend. She said she managed well but could not have managed on her own. There are 10 shallow steps up to the lift, but the steps have a hand rail and once out of the lift, the corridor around the courtyard is wide. The doors in the apartment (apart from the one into the en-suite bathroom) are also wide enough for a wheel chair.

Clean well appointed 2 BATHROOM modern kitchen apartment in EXCELLENT location!

  • 5 of 5

Location was five stars for sure. Blocks from the river, the market (dont miss this one, eat upstairs! very welcoming!) , the parliament, mass transit. There is also a grocery store across the street and two restaurants at the doorstep, and let us not forget the gelato place on the corner. Our favorite way to end the day was with gelato!! Our taxi driver was wonderful who willingly gave us a brief history of Budapest as he drove us across town, helped us with our bags, showed us how everything worked in the apt. and gave us a wonderful first impression of the city. The apt. was clean and was above our expectations. There were guidebooks to peruse and converters for us Americans who did not bring enough to charge the kids phones! The courtyard garden is very peaceful...and well taken care of. Owner very easy to correspond with and Atilla who Bridgett recommended for pick up from our arrival point was fantastic!! Would highly recommend his services. Beds very comfortable. Thank you for a great stay. Lovely city. We will be back to Budapest for sure, and most noteably to this apt. Thank you again for such a lovely clean modern apartment. The sep. bedrooms for parents and each teen was wonderful. Two full bathrooms made it easy to get out for the day. The washer machine was easy to use and worked great. The grocery has some very delicious pastry, coffee in a carton single serve, and yogurt smoothies. I even brought back coffee as souvenirs from grocery!

Urban Living ca. 1920

  • 2 of 5

Let's begin with something positive. The apartment location is perfect, between St. Stephen's Basilica and the Chain Bridge. Most sites in both Buda and Pest are easily walkable. For this reason alone we give a two-star rating to what otherwise would be a one-star property, explained as follows.

There are two major problems with this property: (1) the appointments are quite old and in need of thorough overhaul and (2) the owner is absentee (lives in England) with no one locally responsible for attending to visitors' problems.

The owner has an arrangement with a local taxi driver, Attila. He is pleasant and fluent in English, but he does not act as a caretaker or manager. He admits to no knowledge of the apartment's internal workings and doesn't even have his own key to the place! When problems come up -- and they do! -- you are left on your own.

Attila was suppposed to pick us up at the railway station but was late, due to miscommunication between him and the owner as to our arrival details, which we had provided to the owner far ahead of time. So we had a bumpy start.

About the apartment itself now. If you are interested in what urban life in the year 1920 was like, this is the place for you. The windows look out either to the adjascent building 10' feet away or to the walkway around an inner courtyard. Privacy is limited. Very little sunlight comes in. Together with the dark internal decor, this gives the whole place a dreary atmosphere.

The furnishings and appliances are antiquated and disfunctional. Bed sheets are too small for the beds so can't be tucked in properly. There are too few towels and what there are have the texture of sandpaper. The TV wouldn't turn on at all with the remote controls provided. Worst of all, the clothes washer didn't work. We had to do two weeks' worth of laundry by hand in the bathtub! And don't be fooled by the reference in the property description to a "tumble drier". There is no such thing there, only small heated drying racks.

As noted earlier, there is nobody to call upon when encountering problems as we did. So, overall this was a disappointing experience, especially when compared to other excellent Home Away properties we've used and to which we were happy to give five-star ratings.

Owner's Response: It is upsetting to receive this review and I'm truly sorry the holiday maker did not enjoy his stay, however I feel I must explain a few things for the sake of fairness and clarity for anyone reading this. The apartment house was built in 1860 and was designed to keep the hot sun out in the summer and - being built around a central courtyard - to keep it warm in the winter. It is not a modern building and we have furnished it, as can be seen in the photos, in keeping with the classical period, with some antique furniture and some modern. The bathrooms and kitchen and all modern. We are private owners not a management company and Attila is not employed as a caretaker of manager, but we come to Budapest regularly to take care of the apartment. However he does all he can to help and he offered to come and help with the washing machine. The cleaner has since checked, and the machine is working fine. It also clearly states on the Homeaway site that there is no tumble dryer, there is a drying rack and there are heated towel rails. There is also no problem with the TV, should anyone have a problem with it please read the apartment instructions booklet which tells you how to find the TV channels and also how to play a DVD. Attila is a great chap, an honest and responsible person and really helpful, he apologised for being 10 mins late picking the guests up at the station, not because he was given the wrong information but because of traffic. We do our utmost to liaise with and help the guests coming into the apartment. We appreciate it is sometimes difficult and frustrating to work machines that one is not used to, and I hope the apartment instructions are clear, but I will review them and make sure they are.

The flat was in a beautiful building right in the middle of the city, near the Danube and cathedral.

  • 1 of 5

The property had all one could want, was beautifully clean, practical, comfortable beds, and all one could want. As it was in a courtyard is was peaceful and in an old fashioned style building, yet modernised to high standard.

Attila the taxi driver picked us up and gave us all the details that we needed and we found that the public transport was easy to use, and it was great wandering along the Danube.

The Magic Flute was the best version we have ever seen, and we also attended a wonderful organ flute and voice (bass) concert as well as going to restaurants that had gypsy orchestras which were such fun, with very able musicians. The food was very good on the whole, and on the whole reasonable. Sitting with a glass of wine by the Danube as the people walked by was a real holiday.

Really Nice apartment in a Really Nice location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay in this apartment. Everything was as advertised. The location was pleasant, safe, and near lots of things to see. The apartment was clean, quiet and comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked and we used it for preparing meals, and the wifi worked well. We enjoyed the on demand hot water! We also appreciated the extra power adapters as we had only brought one. There was plenty of space for the three of us and we felt like we could have stayed comfortably with our entire family of five had everyone been on this trip. We also really appreciated the ride from the train station from Attila and that the price for that was known ahead of time. We also used him for the ride back to the station at the end of our stay as it was snowing. We would be happy to stay here again in the future.

The apartment is in the perfect location, near the Basilica in the prestigious District 5. All the top tourist attractions are within an easy 10 min walking distance, including the Opera House, Parliament, National Art Museum, Castle District and the funicular railway, the Famous Chain Bridge and the Vaci Utca shopping street. It is also close to a supermarket and a covered market where you can by excellent fresh produce. It is also, very importantly, only 2 mins walk from some very good bars and restaurants; the Hungarians have some really excellent wine and food! The nearest metro station is 5 mins walk away, and bus and tram stops are 2 mins away. The apartment is also close to the street which houses all the prime antique shops specialising in Biedermeier and Art Deco furniture. Budapest is regaining its former glory, there is street after street of fabulous architecture, many buildings are fully renovated and many still have their rather shabby-chique charm.
