About the property

2 double bedrms. and 2 twin bedrms , 4 ensuites, kit/liv, roof terrace and pool

A quiet street in the Collachio of Birgu, former headquarters of the Knights of St. John, is the setting for 11 TRIQ IL LBIC, a historic townhouse that rises from its medieval cellars to a 21st century roof terrace that features a pool, views of the sea and Valletta skyline. You enter the imposing hall under a ceiling mosaic of the night sky by Count Jonathan Bauman. At ground floor are two twin bedrooms with en suites, one accessed from the hall and the other from a courtyard/atrium at the rear, that rises the full height of the house, flooding all levels with natural light. To the left is a laundry room with washing machine and twin bowled ceramic sink. A grand staircase leads to the first floor which has two double rooms, separated by a small library. Both have en-suites and wrought iron balconies overlooking the street. All bedrooms have wardrobes and generous storage space for suitcases etc. The walls of all bedrooms display paintings and drawings by John and Hilary Hoyland , Rosemary Wentges and other family members. Art Deco Murano chandeliers add a colourful touch of luxury to the high, airy ceilings.

The 2nd floor features a generous living room, decorated in shades of grey with comfortable contemporary furniture and colour notes added by paintings and prints, many again by John and Hilary Hoyland.

Adjoining the living room is a well equipped modern kitchen, with a large 5-ring gas stove, microwave, upright fridge and freezer, and twin bowl sink. A glass dining table with wood-framed, clear polycarbonate chairs complete the picture. Glazed doors open on to a glass floored loggia terrace over the courtyard below, ideal for al fresco breakfast or an evening aperitif. A living room balcony overlooks the the street below and the surrounding area.

The baroque dome of St. Lawrence's church is framed by the bullseye in the door to the roof, which opens onto expansive terraces , enclosed by a colonnaded pergola and featuring a Travertine edged pool. All around are views of the Three Cities, the Kalkara waterfront and Valetta skyline, with the Grand Harbour in between and the open sea beyond. Much of this Baroque panorama is floodlit at night, and firework displays, so much a part of the myriad parochial 'Festas', frequently illuminate the night skies over the islands. ThA canopy shades dining area that seats up to twelve people for al fresco meals. The kitchen is on the floor below, but a small kitchenette and BBQ at rooftop level provides for immediate needs.

The house has been refurbished using and local craftspeople and traditional materials. The house is environmentally friendly with a low carbon footprint, Water is heated by solar panels and electricity is sold back to the grid from our rooftop photo-voltaic panels. Cooling and air-conditioning is achieved by naturally drawing air, cooled by the basement, up through the house, and by venting hot air from the top of the rooms to the exterior. All rooms have electric fans to provide added comfort.

Due to its height and number of staircases No 11 Triq il Lbic is not suitable for the frail, the physically disabled, or wheelchair users. For the able-bodied, the stairs provide good aerobic exercise, with the added reward of stunning views and the prospect of cool dip at the top!

About Richard Hamilton-Wentges

The owner is an Irish architect who bought the property after following his own maxim that 'the best way to get to explore a new location is to tell the local real estate agent that you're interested in buying property ' This invariably guarantees a free guided tour, sometimes lunch, and in this case, led to the purchase of 11 Triq il Lbic in 2012. Breaking all his own rules, the owner allowed the design to grow organically, and the whole process took rather longer than intended. It has definitely resulted in a more satisfying result.

Richard Hamilton-Wentges purchased this house in 2012

Why Richard Hamilton-Wentges chose Birgu

It was quite a grand classical building on a very modest, irregular little side street. This discrepancy immediately set it apart. Half-furnished, half-vacated houses always seem a little sad, but the building had a light, airy quality in spite of its forlorn appearance. The internal spaces were generous in proportion, but it was the roof, with its panoramic views, that marked this building out as having special potential. The courtyard, formerly a rather dark and dreary, offered the prospect of introducing light and air into the heart of the building.

What makes this house unique

Triq il Lbic has some very special qualities , not least being the variety of internal and external spaces that it provides. It is quite possible to stay in the house for several days without feeling the slightest need to go anywhere else. Sit on your room balcony, enjoy the evening shade of the glass loggia, lounge in the pool, read your novel under the canopy surrounded by semi-tropical plants or soak up the rays on the sun terrace. The house at every turn and level offers options for recreation and relaxation, while the views from the balconies and roof terraces give tantalising glimpses of opportunities for exploration, all over the island and in the surrounding sea.

Very good

  • 4 of 5

The property is situated just off the main square in Birgu in a quiet pedestrian street. It is very well presented and comfortable with all you need for to make your stay a success. The air conditioning is provided by portable fans which work very well. The roof top sun area is brilliant with views over birgu the grand harbour and Valletta. The small pool is ideal for cooling off after a day exploring the local area. The house is also ideally place to visit the local restaurants in birgu.

Owner's Response: We were delighted to get this review and another happy guest. We have avoided powered air conditioning and have installed a natural ventilation system assisted by electric portable fans, in order to keep our carbon footprint sustainable. Hot water is heated by solar panels.

Characterful Maltese house

  • 4 of 5

The house is charmingly decorated throughout with Original Artwork and M’dina

Glass. A great view from the rooftop terrace makes breakfasts in the sun a real treat in the Winter. Take warm clothes in the winter as the house is built to keep you cool with thick stone walls. We enjoyed our stay over the Christmas period visiting Valletta by ferry and into Silema for diving experiences. A bus to the ancient city of Il M’dina is well worth a visit. The churches are amazing and welcome visitors to look at the painted ceilings. On Il Birgu, There are lovely local restaurants, The Inquistors palace and the Fort Angelo was worth a combined ticket.

Wonderful accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Spent a lovely time in this fantastic villa in the centre of Vittoriosa. The accommodation is a beautiful building up a small street just off the main square. It was wonderful to spend time in this historical building which has been tastefully decorated with antique furniture and beautiful art. The breakfast room has an amazing glass floor and the highlight was the roof top pool and sun deck on the top floor. We loved staying here and I would say it is the best holiday home that we have spent time in. It's very close to the harbour which has water taxis and a ferry over to Valletta. There are many restaurants and some small convenience stores nearby. The locals are very friendly and Julian was on hand to help us out with any queries that we had. Wonderful accommodation and island which I look forward to paying a return visit to.

Owner's Response: Reviews like this are what makes all the effort that goes into providing a holiday venue worthwhile. A lot of care went into the restoration of 11 Triq il Lbic and into providing a range of spaces for leisure and recreation. We have a very dedicated hospitality team who also very much appreciate when their hard work is acknowledged. When guests look forward to a return visit to Triq il Lbic we look forward to welcoming them.

A Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

In a lovely location. Close to all amenities i.e; shops, bars and restaurants. Public transport close by, bus or ferry across to Valletta. The house was very clean and well equipped. Lots of character.

Owner's Response: Sometimes the shortest reviews are the best. This reviewer nonetheless clearly identifies some of the qualities which make Triq il Lbic so popular with our guests.

Excellent location. Ideal for exploring the island. The local people are very friendly.

The property is gorgeous. Very impressive to look at and has a very welcoming feel. However the 'air conditioning' which consists of just fans is inadequate for keeping you or the property cool. We had to carry all of the fans up to the lounge each day and have them on constantly. Without them the heat within the house meant we were dripping with sweat and feeling quite unwell (we are not generally sweaty people). We then had to take them back to the bedrooms each night as the heat that had accumulated during the day meant it was not possible to get comfortable enough to sleep without them on.

Unfortunately there was an issue with the electrics twice during the week that we stayed so we had periods with no electric and despite the agent saying an electrician was required the problem was not fully rectified during our stay. As a result we had to sacrifice lighting in some areas of the house to be able to use the fans.

We couldn't use all of the hob as some of the control dials were missing so we were unable to turn them on. However there were some working and the oven was simple to use. The property had a lovely large fridge and freezer and a well equipped kitchen.

The dvd player was unusable as there was no scart lead to connect it to the TV so take your own. However there were books and some games provided which was a nice touch. We used these on evenings that we didn't go out.

The rooftop area is lovely with views of the neighbouring streets and part of the harbour. The pool was very well used. The seating area in it was an ideal depth submerging us up to our shoulders.

With these issues rectified the property would be perfect. It is in a lovely location close to the harbour which has a variety of restaurants which are very reasonably priced. It is an ideal base to explore the area or if you prefer to have a relaxing house based holiday.

Richard was helpful throughout the booking process and responded to any requests or questions we had. The agent in location was also friendly and helpful.

Owner's Response: This was a very useful review. When problems are brought to our attention we try to remedy them immediately. The electrical issues, which were at no time dangerous, have been resolved by our electrician. The missing ignition knob on the hob has been replaced. Malta can be very hot and sometimes very humid. Triq il Lbic is traditional Maltese townhouse in a conservation area. We have deliberately chosen not to have Air-conditioning for environmental and conservation reasons. Instead we use natural ventilation based on traditional design, assisted by portable electric fans which most people find quite adequate. We regret that these guests were uncomfortable but so too was the rest of the population of Malta that week.

Best location in Malta

  • 5 of 5

My traveling group loved Malta and felt that our location in Birgu was the best choice - close to great restaurants, great scenery, waterfront and water taxi to Valleta a few minutes walk away, small shops that met our needs ( including pjs when our luggage was lost).

But best of all was our accomodation. The restored home is beautiful, lots of bedrooms and ensuites and very comfortable beds. Julian met us at the house and answered all our questions and gave us great information.

This rental was probably the least complicated and nicest rental I have made through VRBO.

The ancient streets of Birgu have seen their share of violent history from the Great Siege by the Turks in 1565 to the carpet bombing of the Axis powers during WW2. Its battered ramparts and bastions survived and now stand proud again, after recent EU funded conservation and restoration programs.Venerable baroque churches punctuate the winding stone-paved streets of the Collachio, former headquarters of the order of Knights of St John of Jerusalem, the great Hospitaller order who for centuries defended Europe from the assaults of Islamic forces. With equal zeal they grew rich on the proceeds of piracy, while never forgetting their primary mission of tending to the needs of the sick and dying. Their auberges, hospitals and churches bear witness to all these activities. More recent history and the legacy of the British Empire are flagged in the Maritime museum down by the Marina and the 'Malta at War' Museum up on the ramparts, while the controlling magisterium of the Church is borne out in the corridors and dungeons of the Inquisitor's Palace.

The brave people of Birgu survived the vicissitudes of their history and now offer the visitor the rich experience of their culture, cuisine and maritime skills. Festas celebrating the feast days of St Dumniku (Dominick) and St.Lawrenz combine the enthusiasm of a Serie A derby with piety, fireworks and karaoke, in a colourful spectacle that is quite infectious.

For anyone remotely interested in boats, the marina and waterfronts display a flotilla of craft encompassing the hand-painted Maltese fishing boat, the polished chrome and opulence of the oligarch's superyacht and the humble ferryboat, chugging its way to and from Valletta. Along the quays, café-bars and restaurants cater for a range of palates and pockets. Tucked away in the alleyways around TRIQ IL LBIC, culinary gems like Tal Petut(Maltese traditional ) on Triq Pacificu Scicluna or Osteria.ve (Venetian) at the top of Triq Papa Alessandru Vll, seduce the passerby with their mouthwatering aromas. The bars and shady courtyards of the San Lawrenz and San Dumniku bandclubs offer refuge from the heat of the day and a pleasant venue for a G+T at sundown ( for €1.30 !). Around Misrah ir Rebha (Victory Square)you can get anything from a Pint of Guinness to a Pizza or the Pastizzi so favoured by the Maltese. Side streets boast outlets as diverse as crystal merchants and chandlers. Apart from the Tuesday morning market and Sunday car boot sale just beyond the city walls, it is conceivable that one could live quite happily without ever venturing beyond the enclosing ramparts and Foss of Birgu.
