About this property

Pallazzetto, in Birgu/Vittoriosa, rooftop pool with views of sea and Valletta

A quiet street in the Collachio of Birgu, former headquarters of the Knights of St. John, is the setting for 11 TRIQ IL LBIC, a historic townhouse that rises from its medieval cellars to a 21st century roof terrace that features a pool, views of the sea and Valletta skyline. You enter the imposing hall under a ceiling mosaic of the night sky by Count Jonathan Bauman. At ground floor are two twin bedrooms with en suites, one accessed from the hall and the other from a courtyard/atrium at the rear, that rises the full height of the house, flooding all levels with natural light. To the left is a laundry room with washing machine and twin bowled ceramic sink. A grand staircase leads to the first floor which has two double rooms, separated by a small library. Both have en-suites and wrought iron balconies overlooking the street. All bedrooms have wardrobes and generous storage space for suitcases etc. The walls of all bedrooms display paintings and drawings by John and Hilary Hoyland , Rosemary Wentges and other family members. Art Deco Murano chandeliers add a colourful touch of luxury to the high, airy ceilings.
The 2nd floor features a generous living room, decorated in shades of grey with comfortable contemporary furniture and colour notes added by paintings and prints, many again by John and Hilary Hoyland.
Adjoining the living room is a well equipped modern kitchen, with a large 5-ring gas stove, microwave, upright fridge and freezer, and twin bowl sink. A glass dining table with wood-framed, clear polycarbonate chairs complete the picture. Glazed doors open on to a glass floored loggia terrace over the courtyard below, ideal for al fresco breakfast or an evening aperitif. A living room balcony overlooks the the street below and the surrounding area.
The baroque dome of St. Lawrence's church is framed by the bullseye in the door to the roof, which opens onto expansive terraces , enclosed by a colonnaded pergola and featuring a Travertine edged pool. All around are views of the Three Cities, the Kalkara waterfront and Valetta skyline, with the Grand Harbour in between and the open sea beyond. Much of this Baroque panorama is floodlit at night, and firework displays, so much a part of the myriad parochial 'Festas', frequently illuminate the night skies over the islands. A canopy shades a dining area that seats up eight people for al fresco meals. The kitchen is easily accessible on the floor below.
The house has been refurbished using and local craftspeople and traditional materials. The house is environmentally friendly with a low carbon footprint. Water is heated by solar panels. The living room, kitchen and all bedrooms have locally controlled air-conditioning .
Due to its height and number of staircases No 11 Triq il Lbic is not suitable for the physically disabled or wheelchair users. For the able-bodied, the stairs provide good aerobic exercise, with the added reward of stunning views and the prospect of cool dip at the top!

Beautiful Birgu
We were a group of six friends and had a wonderful week in Birgu. It was delightful staying in the pallazzetto which was in the old quarter of the city. There was plenty of room for all of us and we enjoyed many evenings sitting on the roof terrace. We had a memorable holiday in Malta.

Beautiful property and location
A fabulous property in an excellent location. We loved days around the house, on the roof then strolls around the town. The property, in my opinion, is even better than the description portrays. City view, sea view, you can see the top of the cruise ships in the harbour. The bells from the churches during celebrations are fantastic. Canons, fireworks, flags. The locals put so much into the celebrations which can be two or three a week is amazing. You get a great understanding of Maltese life from a stay in Birgu at this fabulous property.

Wonderful home in a lovely quiet city - fantastic spot
The home was every bit as wonderful as it looks in the photos. Have never stayed in such a beautiful house - it was a pleasure! Had everything in the home we could need, and made use of the small pool for refreshing 'chilly' dips each morning (it is May) but expect it would be invaluable in the summer. Great spot just over the water from Valetta - just a short ferry ride over, but Birgu itself was beautiful and there were pubs and fine restaurants right outside our door. Quiet area with pretty narrow streets and traditional buildings. Buses excellent - visited M'dina - an absolute must - but I would skip Bugibba next time!

About the host

Hosted by Richard Hamilton-Wentges

Host profile image
The owner is an Irish architect who bought the property after following his own maxim that 'the best way to get to explore a new location is to tell the local real estate agent that you're interested in buying property ' This invariably guarantees a free guided tour, sometimes lunch, and in this case, led to the purchase of 11 Triq il Lbic in 2012. Breaking all his own rules, the owner allowed the design to grow organically, and the whole process took rather longer than intended. It has definitely resulted in a more satisfying result.

Why they chose this property

It was quite a grand classical building on a very modest, irregular little side street. This discrepancy immediately set it apart. Half-furnished, half-vacated houses always seem a little sad, but the building had a light, airy quality in spite of its forlorn appearance. The internal spaces were generous in proportion, but it was the roof, with its panoramic views, that marked this building out as having special potential. The courtyard, formerly a rather dark and dreary, offered the prospect of introducing light and air into the heart of the building.

What makes this property unique

Triq il Lbic has some very special qualities , not least being the variety of internal and external spaces that it provides. It is quite possible to stay in the house for several days without feeling the slightest need to go anywhere else. Sit on your room balcony, enjoy the evening shade of the glass loggia, lounge in the pool, read your novel under the canopy surrounded by semi-tropical plants or soak up the rays on the sun terrace. The house at every turn and level offers options for recreation and relaxation, while the views from the balconies and roof terraces give tantalising glimpses of opportunities for exploration, all over the island and in the surrounding sea.
