The SeaHoss is a cottage in Cornwall perched on the harbour wall in the picturesque Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey. Originally built as an old fish cellars in the 1700's and constructed from the timbers of a shipwreck washed up on a local beach, it has recently been fully refurbished to make a beautiful harbourside home.

The house is built over 3 floors and has harbour, ocean and lighthouse views from every window including both bathrooms. There are 2 bedrooms, 2 reception rooms, a beautifully designed galley kitchen with a dining area overlooking the harbour and two bathrooms. All of the local amenities of the village , the local beaches and the coastal path are on the doorstep.

The house is furnished in a soft industrial, coastal style, mixing vintage items & antique nautical finds with top of the range appliances and natural products .The entrance to the house is from the coastal path, enter through the front door with handmade "SeaHoss" glass made from the Cornish company Jo Downs, and a small hallway leads to a modern wet room with rain shower and on to the Morning Room which has wide waxed original floorboards, antique leather chesterfield, scattered cowhide rugs, antique Thomas Lloyd leather wingback armchair and soft cashmere throws. A collection of travel magazines, vintage books by local authors, maps to plan the days activities and an ipad with high speed fibre optic broadband are all at the guests disposal.

An antique spiral staircase ( unsuitable for children under 10) leads down to the galley kitchen, once the original fish cellars, which is now contemporary with every modern convenience. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher and an electric Aga range with an induction hob, which stands on a slate plinth in the old pilchard smoking fireplace. Smooth Cornish slate worktops give the kitchen a traditional twist, along with a shabby chic dresser made by a family friend and a driftwood poseaur dining table positioned just so, to give fabulous harbour views. This is an interesting and historical room as it was the original pilchard press and beneath the porcelain floor, showcased by a bronze porthole from a timber ship, is the original oak pilchard oil barrel.

Leading off from the elegant Morning Room on the first floor is the tv and sitting room . Snuggle down to watch a favourite movie on the comfortable, deep sofa with squashy cushions. Watch the boating activities on the harbour or storm watch on a rainy winters day. There is "Now TV" with an entertainment package and also Sky movies.

Sky sporting events can be arranged by prior notice. On the top floor there are two good size double bedrooms both with zip and link beds set up as a twin room or kingsize and a master with a superking ft bed which can be split into twin beds. Both bedrooms have lovely harbour views. Between the two bedrooms is a pretty bathroom, decorated in a coastal style, with a slipper bath overlooking the harbour.

On arrival guests receive a welcome pack with Cornish produce and essentials.

Adjoining the house is a utility room with washing machine and sink for washing away the sand or mud from a winters walk along the coast path and a good place to store walking boots and wet coats in the winter or crabbing kits and fishing rods in the summer. There is also a small freezer.

A rarity for a property this close to the water on the harbour, the house also has a small terrace with driftwood benches and some of the best harbour views in the town. A perfect spot to people watch and enjoy a proper Cornish cream tea - jam first!

The SeaHoss was named "The 'Hoss" after the German ship which went down near a local beach at Chapel point in the 1700s. The house was constructed from the salvaged timbers of the boat. The wooden planking on the front of the house was used by local fishermen to log the boats coming into Mevagissey harbour, there are many boat etching carved into it some of which can be identified from the books in the Morning Room.

Healthy infrared heating means the air is healthy and the porcelain floors in the kitchen and bathrooms are warm underfoot.

Due to the location of the property on the harbour side there is no onsite parking ( unless you arrive by boat!) but guests are able to bring a car along the harbour to unload. Parking is a short, flat, walk away on a public car park for which we provide a complimentary permit.

Mevagissey is a beautiful working fishing village, a jumble of narrow streets lined with independent and interesting shops, art galleries, artisan foods and antiquities and historic public houses. Watch the fishing boats come in and buy fresh fish straight off the boats from the quayside for supper. There is a fine selection of eateries, bakeries, a small supermarket and a delicatessen all within a short walk from The SeaHoss.

Home Truths

The SeaHoss is over 300 years old and a Grade 2 listed house. It has been fully renovated to the highest standard and furnished exquisitely with love and attention to detail - but if you are expecting modern perfection this is not the holiday home for you! By it's nature, the antique waxed floors are uneven, the windows, although completely refurbished, are the original old sash and are not double glazed. Having said this, apart from the fishing boats going out and the sound of the sea it is fairly quiet.The front of the house is constructed from timber from an old shipwreck and is insulated with Cornish sheepswool. The original ships timbers are exposed in the Galley and are rough and some have old ships nails protruding. The walls are rendered in lime and so do shed occasionally onto the edges of the floor and side tables, this is not the fault of the cleaners.

Please Note: - The house is built over 3 floors, all rooms are seaward facing with incredible views. There is a tight antique spiral staircase down to the galley kitchen with original rails which means the house may not be suitable for persons of limited ability.

About Cornish Escapes

We have been in the hospitality business for over 25 years, firstly running luxury hotels in the Midlands and then moving to Cornwall in 1999 to operate a self catering cottage business. We spend our time living in both Cornwall and Cyprus and Carrie now runs a small agency for the properties in both countries.

We feel very privileged to be the custodians of such a wonderful landmark property as The SeaHoss. It is a piece of Cornish heritage and will be in the family for many years to come.

Why Cornish Escapes chose Cornwall

II couldn't believe my luck when this property came onto the market. It was in a terrible state but I lost my heart at first glance. It took 18 months to renovate but the hard work and tears were worth it. The property has a wonderful homely feel to it and of course, incredible sea views.

What makes this house unique

The location of the SeaHoss is fabulous but the history is its most unique benefit. The house has not only been preserved but the history has been showcased. The old pilchard press lever holes are a feature in the kitchen and the oak barrel to collect the oil is housed beneath the kitchen floor.

The house was built from the timbers of a shipwreck and the original ships timbers are visable throughout the property.

The house was used as a log to record the boats in the harbour in the 1700s

I am an amature cook and had a great time in your kitchen cooking fresh caught seafood from across the harbour. I live on the coast in Queensland and love cooking our fish. So it was great to experiment with the seafood from your area. Had some success with a particular "sole" which is exclusive to your area and one other area in Scotland.

I will give some thought to what may improve a guests experience but you do set a very high standard already.

Quaint cottage

Enjoyed our stay at SeaHoss. Quaint cottage on the waterfront. Perfect for two couples sharing the apt. Only disappointment was we missed our first night of the reservation due to airline delay from USA to London due to mechanical problems which caused us to miss connection flight to NewQuay! Would highly recommend this lodging!

Great house, great location, great town

The house is excellently positioned in the centre of town overlooking the harbour. It is clean and comfortable and has everything you need. The views are great from every room, including the upstairs bathroom where you can look out at the harbour and watch the boats come and go whilst enjoying a soak in the tub.

Mevagissey is well situated for coastal walks. We went walking every day and started from the house most days. The ferry to Fowey is handy and there are great walks there too. Everyone in the town is really friendly from the car park attendants when you first arrive to people in the bars and restaurants. The restaurants are good and Sharksfin and Salamander were our favourites for food. The quiz in the Harbour Tavern was a good laugh on Tuesday.

We parked in the harbour for 2 minutes to unload the car but the car park is an easy walk. We cooked in a couple of nights and the kitchen has everything you could need, including some good cook books. Watch out for the local cat which can easily jump over the stable style door! All rooms in the house are comfortable and we also enjoyed a bit of people watching with our G&T's on the little terrace in the early evening!

Apart from our arrival day we were lucky with the weather and had a fantastic week at the Hoss. We highly recommend you visit!

Superb!

What a gem of a place! We had the most relaxing and enjoyable stay at The Foss. The location is stunning, overlooking the historically beautiful Mevagissey harbour. Relaxing in the hot tub and watching the fishing boats bobbing on the water was one of my favourite moments in this gorgeous home. The Foss is a unique gem in a very special location of Mevagissey, with fantastic pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops all on the doorstep, and exquisite views to enjoy along the nearby coastal walk. You couldn't wish for more at The Foss, it's got real creature comforts and offers everything you could ask for. We will definitely be returning!

There are coastal walks from the doorstep. The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the world famous Eden Project are less than 15 minutes drive from the property. The open air Minack theatre, with a backdrop of turquoise ocean and the occasional dolphin pod, is a perfect day out. There are many wonderful fishing villages and beaches within a 30 minute drive.
