About the property

Luxury self-catering for 9 guests (10 by arrangement) 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms

The Old Vicarage is a very special, luxury self-catering experience in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Positioned high on a secluded hillside, this magnificent country house is surrounded by wooded valleys and rolling pastures. It is set in enclosed spacious grounds and even has its own private stretch of the picturesque River Swale. The views from every room are breathtaking, with stunning panoramic vistas of Swaledale.

Guests also have exclusive use of outstanding private leisure facilities that include a large heated indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and fully-equipped gym with table tennis and table football. There is also an all-weather tennis court.

With every comfort in mind, The Old Vicarage has been thoughtfully decorated and furnished to create a relaxed yet sumptuous place to stay. Sleeping up to ten people - with five bedrooms, spacious reception rooms and three bathrooms - it is ideal for families and friends who are looking to relax, unwind, re-charge and re-vitalise while exploring this popular holiday area.

Although only a short drive from the historic market town of Richmond with its famous Norman castle, the house itself is set on its own and enjoys perfect peace and tranquility. The only sounds are the calls of the wild birds, the nearby river and occasional conversation of grazing farm animals.

There are numerous walking and cycling routes direct from the doorstep and The Old Vicarage is also perfectly situated to explore the Dales with its many activity opportunities and exciting visitor attractions.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a fantastic weekend. The facilities have been perfect and all 8 of us have felt totally at home here and reluctant to leave and join the 'rat race' again'! The small touches that you have left made us feel very welcome and we can't wait to come back again!

Perfect for a Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5

The Old Vicarage was the perfect location for our family holiday, hosting three generations ranging in age from 3 months to 60+. The house is spacious, warm and very well-equipped, with wonderful views and a lovely garden for the children to play in.

The leisure facilities are superb. The pool was the highlight but we made full use of all the many facilities available. We spent hours there every day and had to drag the children away at meal times.

Julie couldn't have been more helpful, ensuring we had everything we needed to get the maximum enjoyment from our stay. Thanks so much, Julia.

Owner's Response: We loved having you all here Roger! The beauty of the Old Vic itself, its surroundings and the associated leisure facilities is that they tick so many boxes for a wide age range of guests, as you say. We'd love to see you here again any time of year. Enjoy the rest of your summer Julia

Great family property

  • 5 of 5

The Old Vicarage is a pleasently secluded detached property on private farmland with direct access to fields and a beautiful stretch of the River Swale. The short walking distance to the owners leisure facilities is made up for by the excellent options on offer, easily up to 4* hotel standards, and is completely private with straightforward prior arrangment with the owner by SMS. If you want a rural holiday with kids and do not want to drive too much then this is ideal.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

The house and leisure facilities far exceeded my expectations.

What a wonderful relaxing week we all had, we were a party of seven, ages ranging from 9 to 74. I could not have chosen a better place to celebrate my 70th birthday, beautiful house, fantastic views and as my grandchildren said," amazing leisure facilities".

Great property for large family group,

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here for a week in early September with grown up children and their partners. Excellent well equipped property. Leisure facilities are a walk across the fields, but are amazing. Booked massage from the link provided, and that was great. Daughter and her partner even got to help groom the cows

Spacious, very well maintained and equipped

  • 5 of 5

This was a pre-60th birthday celebration for 8 people. We could not fault any aspect of our stay. The property is very spacious and well maintained, ith all the equipment you could possibly need to self-cater. The leisure facilities nearby are simply superb. We received a very comprehensive information pack prior to our visit and we were warmly welcomed on arrival by th owners who live nearby.

Although th property is quite isolated (which is part of its charm for me), Richmond and Catterick are an easy drive and there are several attractive villages nearby. We both ate out and catered in-house; supermarket delivery was available, which was very useful.

Throughout our stay we felt comfortable and relaxed. We had the bonus of unsesaonably excellent weather but as I had not expected this when booking, the importance of the lesiure facilities cannot be overstated, and we were not let down. Quite magificent in scope and design.

Very warmly recommended.

Fantastic getaway weekend

  • 5 of 5

The house by far exceeded our expectations, set in rolling countryside with fantastic views. The house is equipped with everything that you need for your stay and is all of a high quality; the welcome hamper is full of local produce and was delicious. We went for local walks in between using the leisure facilities which are second to non and immaculate. We had already agreed to book again for next year before we left! Can't wait!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at The Old Vicarage and that you were able to have some relaxing time in the leisure facilities. It is lovely to be able to have a sauna or go in the Jacuzzi and steam room after a day out in the Dales. Thank you also for your kind comments about the welcome hamper. We try hard to source high-quality local produce.

The Old Vicarage lies in the heart of Swaledale, near Richmond, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, known the world over for its picture postcard images of drystone walls, green valley pastures and dramatic countryside.

THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA

Richmond

Just a few miles away is the historic market town of Richmond - famed for its elegant Georgian architecture, cobbled streets and landmark Norman castle. Here you will find many interesting shops, craft galleries, museums and other places of interest. If you feel like taking in some of the fresh country air there are plenty of local walks and the waterfalls are well worth a visit.

Reeth and nearby villages

There are also lots of picturesque villages to explore on the doorstep, all with their own unique flavour. Reeth, a traditional walking and cycling centre with a large village green, has a number of craft workshops and a local heritage museum. It is also the closest place to find a good choice of pubs, teashops and popular ice-cream parlour.

Outdoor activities

The area is renowned for walking and cycling (see the separate sections on this website), with inexhaustible networks of footpaths, bridleways and country lanes, including the famous 'Coast to Coast' route and the most northern part of the 2014 Tour de France cycle race. Other activities include horse riding, golf, caving and there is great fishing to be had on local rivers and fishing lakes.

Castles and historic houses

Yorkshire has an abundance of castles, abbeys and stately homes. As well as Richmond Castle, Bolton Castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was famously held prisoner) and Middleham Castle (the childhood home of Richard III) are close by. The abbeys of Easby, Byland, Rievaulx and Fountains (Yorkshire’s first World Heritage site) are also within easy reach, as are the crowd-pulling stately homes of Newby Hall and Castle Howard.

Family days out

Families are spoilt for choice when selecting activities. There are several visitor farms in the area. The closest is at Hazel Brow, which offers opportunities to get up close to the animals. The Forbidden Corner, near Middleham, is billed as the strangest place in the world and its unique labyrinths of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises certainly provide an endless source of fascination for all ages. Older children can test their endurance and skills at the Aerial Extreme adventure ropes course and Flamingoland and Lightwater Valley theme parks provide additional family fun.

Slightly further afield

Historic York, Durham and the Spa town of Harrogate and all within an hour’s drive, providing a host of attractions and shopping opportunities. If you travel east through the North York Moors, you soon reach the coast with its picturesque fishing villages, such as Robin Hoods Bay, and the traditional seaside resorts of Scarborough and Filey. Lesser-known Runswick Bay (5 miles north of Whitby) is not only a beautiful coastal town with its brightly painted fishing cobles, but it’s a great place for fossil hunting too!
